  • Head thanks staff for “ongoing dedication” after glowing report

Head thanks staff for “ongoing dedication” after glowing report

One of our secondary schools has welcomed a fantastic progress report, after a recent visit by inspectors.

The headteacher and staff at Ysgol Y Grango are celebrating a recent report by Estyn, which shows that the school has followed up on all the recommendations from an earlier inspection.

The good news comes as the school continues its expansion, having been over-subscribed over the last three years.

A BAD DEAL FROM WELSH GOVERNMENT MEANS WE’RE FORCED TO MAKE MORE CUTS. HAVE YOUR SAY…

The report has noted strong improvements in a number of areas, including:

    • Pupils’ performance at the end of Key Stage 4, putting them at performance levels above those of a majority of similar schools
    • The “wide range of valuable opportunities” to help pupils develop their numeracy, literacy and ICT skills.
    • More self-evaluation and improvement planning, both of which have been “strengthened significantly”.
    • The strength of pupils’ voices in the school’s development, including through events such as “Feedback Fridays”, which allows pupils to give their views on teaching and learning.

    “Absolutely delighted with positive comments”

Stephen Garthwaite, headteacher at Ysgol y Grango, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the positive comments within the inspection report. This reflects the hard work and commitment of the whole school team to strive for excellence across all areas, so that all our students receive the very best education and care.

“We have also further invested in the professional development of our teachers with regard to classroom and assessment practice and we encourage frequent sharing of good practice, again factors recognised by the inspectors.

“As a school we can be confident that we have put in place measures that will ensure a successful future, building on what we have already achieved and continuing to drive up aspirations.

“I would like to thank all the staff for their ongoing dedication, and the community for their invaluable support.”

Ian Roberts, head of education at Wrexham Council, congratulated the school for its “excellent outcome” following the Estyn visit and praised everyone for their “effort, commitment and dedication.”

Cllr Phil Wynn, lead member for education, said: “I’m very pleased with this excellent progress report, and congratulations are due to all staff, pupils and governors for their efforts in ensuring the school has delivered against Estyn’s recommendations by the time of the second inspection.”

Brian Jones, the chair of governors, said: “The governors are delighted with the many positive aspects highlighted in the report. There is a real appreciation of the hard work undertaken by the headteacher and leadership team to promote an excellent learning environment and a strong, caring ethos.

“We are all focused on driving up levels of attainment and I am confident that with everything that has been done and will be done, the school can look forward to a very bright future ahead.

“As a community, we must all encourage our young people to aim high and realise their dreams.”

We have to make even more cuts…and ask taxpayers for more money. But before we do anything, we want to know what you think.

School meal menus straight to your inbox

If your children enjoy school meals, here’s a handy tip…

If you’re fed-up of having to look for the menu online, or struggle to keep track of that elusive paper copy (!), we can email it straight to your inbox.

Once you’re subscribed, you’ll receive the menu every Sunday at 3:30pm…so you can see what our schools are serving up over the coming week.

There are three menus – ‘week one’, ‘week two’ and ‘week three’ – which we repeat on a three-week cycle.

After each school holiday the first week back will always be the ‘week one’ menu.

    Good stuff

We provide a good range of meal choices in our schools.

For your peace of mind your child’s meals will provide them with lots of nutrition, covering a range of food groups, and fit with the standards set for the whole of Wales.

Good stuff for growing children 🙂

As any parent knows, it can be a challenge providing food that kids enjoy, while also promoting good eating habits.

  • Winners announced for the Wonders Of Wrexham 2019 Calendar

Winners announced for the Wonders Of Wrexham 2019 Calendar

Well, the judges have now deliberated and have announced the winners of the Wonders of Wrexham 2019 Calendar and what a cracking set of photos they are!

We have once again photos of the incredible architecture and scenery that we have here in Wrexham. From sheep to a National Trust Castle, a World Heritage Site to our splendid trees and views.

The judges had a very difficult job but we hope you agree the end results once again reveal some of the Wonders of Wrexham ready for 2019.

A BAD DEAL FROM WELSH GOVERNMENT MEANS WE’RE FORCED TO MAKE MORE CUTS. HAVE YOUR SAY…

The Calendar will go on sale very shortly and we’ll bring you news of how much it will cost and where it will be available soon.

The Mayor, Councillor Andy Williams, said: “The Calendar is looking good and is an excellent reminder to everyone of all that’s unique and great about Wrexham. I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone you who contributed to the making of this calendar and congratulations to the winners who are all listed below. I look forward to seeing it go on sale in the very near future and to meeting the all winners before Christmas.”

    January – December

    • Bangor on Dee Bridge and Church taken by Adrian Wright.  A cracking shot of this beautiful bridge which dates back to around 1660. the five arched stone structure is believed to have been built by Inigo Jones.
    • Gresford Wheel taken by Sally Davies. The iconic headgear of the former Gresford Colliery was preserved as part of the Gresford Disaster Memorial. Every year a service is held on the site to remember those who lost their lives in this terrible disaster. All four of our judges voted this the number one! This photo will also be the feature photo on the front of the Calendar.
    • All Saints church in Gresford taken by Steve Harvey. The peel of these bells make them one of the 7 Wonders of Wales so it’s only right that this photo made the final 13. Built in the 15 Century it really is worth a visit.
    • Bersham Waterfall taken by Carl Edwards. This is always one of our favourite views of Wrexham and we couldn’t resist including at least one view of this beautiful waterfall situated right here in Wrexham.
    • Farndon Bridge taken by Ian Lucas, MP, Farndon Bridge – OK this is seen by many to be in England! It is however a medieval gateway into Wrexham and does look splendid in this shot. Welcome to Wales!
    • The Mere at Hanmer taken by Paul Wynn. This Mere is a little gem in a beautiful and historic part of Wrexham – the Maelor. It is evidence that you don’t have to go far in Wrexham to see outstanding views.
    • Chirk Castle taken by Steve Harvey.  A Grade 1 Listed Building, property of the National Trust and with 700 years of history it’s no wonder it’s featured in this calendar. Thanks to the National Trust for allowing us to use the image.
    • Llwyn Isaf taken by Iolanda Banu. Right in the heart of the town centre is this little chappie – who, with his friends, are charming children and adults alike. The sheep trail takes you around the county borough and they’re all as charming as this one.
    • Bellevue Park Bandstand taken by Paul Wynn. Another town centre gem – this Victorian park is very popular with locals and visitors alike and the bandstand is host to a number of Music in the Park events in the summer months.
    • Penrhos Engine House taken by Ben Hughes. A reminder of our industrial heritage with this Scheduled Ancient Monument at Brymbo. Built by John Wilkinson in the late 18 Century it’s thought to be the earliest surviving colliery engine house in Wales.
    • Bank Street taken by Danny Edwards. One of the oldest streets in Wrexham, Bank Street, remains a busy and quaint thoroughfare in the town centre. Home to many old buildings and a must see for visitors to the town centre.
    • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct taken by Daniel Cooke the centre piece of the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site and a sight not to be missed – this fantastic image sums up the longevity of this structure. How many winters has it seen? Well over 250 and still looking cool!

We have to make even more cuts…and ask taxpayers for more money. But before we do anything, we want to know what you think.

  • The best bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants in Wrexham announced!

The best bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants in Wrexham announced!

Licensees from across the county borough attended the Best Bar None awards ceremony at Maesgwyn Hall, Wrexham on Wednesday evening.

Best Bar None Wrexham is part of the national voluntary Best Bar Scheme for night time venues, designed to keep staff and customers safe while recognising excellence in their industry via a ‘rigorous audit’ of over 120 criteria covering everything from responsible and safe management to customer care.

Participating licensees are encouraged to act responsibly and take pride in their premises and surroundings and, in doing so, put something back into their town and local communities. The scheme culminates annually in an awards ceremony which celebrates the achievement of all of the premises.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

The scheme is in partnership with North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Wrexham County Borough Council and aims to reduce alcohol-related incidents by raising the standards of licensed premises and building positive relationships among all stakeholders which include operators of licensed premises and their staff.

The scheme is open to town centre premises, with 13 venues participating this year with the final assessments taking place in October 2018.

During November, a judging panel met to consider each application and decided the winners across four categories namely Best Bar, Best Pub, Best Restaurant and Best Club, and an overall winner of Best Bar None 2018.

    This year’s winners are…
    • Best Bar None Wrexham Overall Winner – Ironworks, Wrexham
    • Best Bar – Ironworks, Wrexham
    • Best Club – Atik, Wrexham
    • Best Pub – The Fat Boar, Wrexham
    • Best Restaurant – Frankie and Benny’s, Wrexham

All premises that enter the Best Bar None Awards Scheme are audited by trained assessors and, if successful, will become an accredited member of the scheme achieving either a Gold, Silver or Bronze award. The top premises are then put before an independent judging panel, who select the winners in each category.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety said, “Participation in the Best Bar None Scheme is voluntary and requires a great deal of commitment and hard work from all of the participants and therefore this makes the decision regarding the “Best Of” categories quite a challenge. All pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants in the scheme should be commended for the work they are doing to make Wrexham a safe place”

This year’s Best Bar None awards were sponsored by Wrexham Lager, Carlsberg and Synergy Security.
