  • More wheelie boxes on the way

More wheelie boxes on the way

Recycling rates have done really well in Wrexham in the past few years.

Thanks to the efforts of all our residents, the amount of waste recycled in Wrexham hit 68% in 2017/2018 – which is fantastic.

We also know that our recycling wheelie boxes, first introduced in 2016, have proven a popular and convenient way of helping residents to recycle their household waste.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

At the moment, only around 16,000 of all homes in Wrexham use the wheelie boxes, with other homes using the original-style containers.

Luckily, there’s good news on the horizon…

    2,800 new wheelie boxes

We’ve received £112,000 in funding from the Welsh Government to buy more recycling wheelie boxes.

This means we’ll have 2,800 additional boxes, ready to distribute throughout the county from Saturday, September 1.

The new roll-out is again based on the wheelie box trial we carried out in 2015, when about 200 boxes were tested at homes throughout the county borough.

The results from that initial trial showed that the boxes work well on bigger estates and areas with good access.

We’ve also spoken to other councils who’ve been using wheelie boxes for their input as well, so we can learn from those who’ve been using wheelie boxes longer than we have.

This roll-out will involve a small number of boxes covering areas such as New Broughton, Penley, Llwyn Onn Park, Ruabon, Marchwiel, Cartrefle, Garden Village, Acrefair, Rhos, Johnstown, Gwersyllt and Pontfadog.

    “Even more improvements to recycling”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We’re grateful to the Welsh Government for this further investment into our recycling wheelie boxes, and with the further roll-out, about a quarter of all homes in the county borough will be covered by wheelie boxes.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all Wrexham residents once again for the enthusiasm with which they’ve embraced recycling. Thanks to them, we’ve been able to bring our recycling rates up to some really excellent levels, and with improvements like the further roll-out of wheelie boxes, that rate can only improve.”

More world class live music on it’s way to Wrexham…

With a thriving music scene and a host of diverse venues and regular events, Wrexham has cemented it’s place as a top destination for watching live music.

This upcoming performance at Tŷ Pawb, working together with local music promotion collective, House of Lux, promises to be something really special.

We are delighted to announce that acclaimed American singer/songwriter, John Murry will be joining us for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    A unique and fascinating performer

If you’re not familiar with John’s work, his career got off to a flyer with his debut record, The Graceless Age, described as the “album of a lifetime” when it was released in 2012.

The album was listed by Uncut as one of the 10 best records of 2012. Mojo also included it in their 10 best albums of 2013, as well as The Guardian in their Top 50 of 2013 and American Songwriter in their Top 5 of 2013.

An extraordinary work of breathtaking scope and ambition, it came from nowhere and seemed to have set up John Murry as a major artist.

This early success was followed by an eventful and often tragic period in his life.

After a huge personal journey, John finally released his second full-length album in June of this year.

This new album, A Short History Of Decay, is an inspired and intensely personal document of an artist’s fall from grace.

The Quietus describe the new album as: “Pure Americana: music rooted in the tradition of folk, country, blues and rock, drawing on a heritage and culture familiar through nearly 100 years of film and music. It’s also the Southern Gothic novel Murry might have written had he followed his family’s path.”

His performance at Tŷ Pawb is part of a UK wide tour taking place over 2018.

An impressive line up of support acts

John Murry will be joined by two other fantastic acts.

Benjamin Folke Thomas is a London based singer/songwriter with some pretty impressive accolades:

“The missing link between Ingmar Bergman and Johnny Cash” – Uncut
“Some of the best guitar playing you’re ever likely to hear” – Q Magazine
“Stands out like Oliver Reed at an AA-meeting” – The Observer

Also on the bill will be Glove – a sonic and soul collaboration between artists Slosilver and Stephanie Finegan.

Glove have been described as “…oozing art, poetry and a musical brilliance that sets your mind racing and your heart pounding. They are dancing on the bones of rock and roll. Glove are the here and now. Glove are the future.” – Louder Than War.

    Don’t miss this amazing night

    • John Murry and guests will be performing at Tŷ Pawb on Saturday September 15.

  • A festival of film comes to Wrexham…

A festival of film comes to Wrexham…

If you’re a fan of thought provoking, inspiring and original filmmaking, then you won’t want to miss this!

We are delighted to announce that Tŷ Pawb has been selected as one of the venues to host a film for the 2018 Watch Africa: Wales African Film Festival.

The festival celebrates the best of African cinema.

Launched in 2013, it provides a platform for African films, art and culture in Wales. It brings a wide-range of films covering areas across the continent, as well as engaging and interactive activities and events related to the festival.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    So what’s coming to Wrexham?

As part of the festival Tŷ Pawb will be showing the critically acclaimed, multi award winning film, I Am Not A Witch (2017), written and directed by Rungano Nyoni.

Following a banal incident in her local village, 8-year old girl Shula is accused of witchcraft. After a short trial she is found guilty, taken into state custody and exiled to a witch camp in the middle of a desert.

At the camp she takes part in an initiation ceremony where she is shown the rules surrounding her new life as a witch. Like the other residents, Shula is tied to a ribbon which is attached to a coil that perches in a large tree. She is told that should she ever cut the ribbon, she’ll be cursed and transformed into a goat.

A Q&A session will follow the screening, featuring Fadhili Maghila – who will talk about African cinema and Norbert Mputu – who will be discussing the theme of witchcraft.

    A celebration of filmmaking

Tŷ Pawb’s Creative Director, Jo Marsh, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as one of the venues for this wonderful festival, celebrating African film, art and culture in Wales. It’s a great example of the kind of diverse cultural offering that Tŷ Pawb is able to bring to Wrexham and we are very proud to be able to present the film and host what promises to be a fascinating conversation to follow.”

    How to get involved

    • I Am Not A Witch will be shown at 6.30pm on Saturday, September 1.
    • Tickets are £3.75.

The powerful photographic exhibition “Equipped for Life” is now open for everyone to take a look at in Tŷ Pawb.

The images show several ex service personnel and how they coped once they were in civvy street – a transition some found easier than others.

“Meet former RAF serviceman Andy Matthews, from Wrexham”

There’ll be an official opening on Friday at 2.00pm when Andy Matthews, from Wrexham and ex RAF, will be on hand to chat with visitors. He’s one of the subjects in the photographs and after serving 14 years in the RAF he realised he wanted to do more in an advocacy role. He left the forces to take up studies at Glyndwr University here in Wrexham. He obtained a first class honours degree and an award for the most achieving student. Since leaving university he has started working for the third sector where he is Director of Operations.

Members of the public are more than welcome to attend this opening and have a chat with Andy. He’ll be available from 2pm on Friday in the Tŷ Pawb reception area by the Market Street entrance.
