We are going to repair and re-point some retaining walls at various places along the B5426 in Minera.

We won’t need to close the road but we will have to put traffic lights in place whilst the works take place.

We will be starting work on the 5 March and the works should take 3 weeks to complete.

  • Runners to tackle London Marathon to help in fight against MS

Runners to tackle London Marathon to help in fight against MS

Louise Strachan and Sheila Rodenhurst, both from Penley, will take part in the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday, April 22.

Both will be running for the Multiple Sclerosis Society – Louise’s son Ryan and Sheila’s son Gareth both suffer from the condition.

The duo have already taken part in a number of 10k races as part of their training, and held a slew of fundraising events to help them reach their combined £4000 target – and also have their sights set on the Wrexham Half Marathon.

GET SNAPPY – FOLLOW US ON SNAPCHAT.

The duo have to raise £2000 each as part of their fundraising drive for the marathon, and to date have raised a combined £2,200 through a series of events such as coffee mornings, car boot sales, Christmas fetes, car washes and breakfast meetings.

Last week, the duo also received a donation from Cllr John Pritchard, the Mayor of Wrexham.

They’ve also organised further events including a quiz night, fashion show and raffle – but know their training for the marathon will take up more of their time as the date nears, and as such are seeking donations to help them hit their target.

“First time we’ve taken on a marathon”

Ms Strachan said: “We’ve each been fundraising for the MS Society for some time now, but this will be the first time we’ve taken on a marathon!

“We’re so pleased to have got this opportunity – the London Marathon attracts a lot of publicity in and of itself and we’ll be among about 300 people taking part in the race on behalf of the MS society.

“We hope that we can raise as much money as possible through this, and help the MS Society push for more treatment opportunities, research and support for those going through what can be a painful, frustrating and tiring condition.”

She added: “We both work for Penley Rainbow centre, who have supported us by allowing full use of the facilities.”

Ms Rodenhurst said: “As well as living in the same area and working together, Louise and I have been fundraising together for the MS Society for some time as our sons suffer due to it.

“We’ve received an awful lot of support from Penley and Overton throughout our fundraising careers and we’re incredibly grateful for that support – but we’re hopeful that now we’re undertaking something as big as the London Marathon, we can push our publicity and fundraising even further.

“We started running in March last year just as a way of keeping fir and spending time with some like-minded people – and in a moment of madness, we decided to apply for the London Marathon to see if we’d get a place.”

“Louise and Sheila passionate and well-informed MS campaigners”

Cllr John Pritchard, the Mayor of Wrexham, said: “I was very pleased to be able to meet Louise and Sheila and welcome to the Mayor’s Parlour last week, and I hope the donation I presented to them is one among many which will help them hit their target.

“Both are clearly passionate and well-informed advocates of MS support, and I wish them every luck on the London Marathon on April 22.”

  • Don’t fall foul of sofa salesmen

Don’t fall foul of sofa salesmen

Trading Standards officers are concerned about cold callers offering to sell goods such as mattresses and upholstered furniture as we’ve had some recent complaints from some of you who appear to have been targeted by them.

The major concern with the type of products they are selling is safety.

GET SNAPPY – FOLLOW US ON SNAPCHAT.

    “Impossible to tell if compliant”

Strict laws help to ensure upholstered furniture and mattresses present minimum risk in the event of fire but non-compliant products can be lethal. Products offered may carry labelling that claims they comply with safety standards but it is impossible to tell if furniture or mattresses are safe just by looking at them.

Because of this, it is really important that consumers buy these products at reputable, established retailers supplied by identifiable manufacturers. Buying on the doorstep presents a high risk of receiving dangerous goods and customers will have no information or record of the seller or manufacturer’s details.

If you have purchased a mattress or a sofa on the doorstep please report this to Citizens Advice Consumer Service 03454 040506

If you see people going door to door offering to sell these items in your area please report this to Citizens Advice or Police on 101.

  • Successful launch of new ADTRAC project across North East Wales

Successful launch of new ADTRAC project across North East Wales

Almost two hundred people attended the recent North East Wales launch of the new ADTRAC project in Wrexham and Flintshire.

The two events, held at Connah’s Quay Civic Hall and Plas Pentwyn Resource Centre in Coedpoeth, Wrexham, were packed with attendees from across the education, health, criminal justice, youth and employment service sectors.

Delegates from across the region heard how the ADTRAC East team plan to meet ambitious targets of supporting more than 300 young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) over the next two to three years in Wrexham and Flintshire.

The timing of the events coincided with the Time to Talk mental health annual awareness campaign across the UK, given the focus of the project to support young people aged 16-24 to address their mental health issues as barriers to their engagement in education, training, employment.

A spokesman for Wrexham County Borough Council said: “The launch of the ADTRAC project has been a real success across Wrexham and Flintshire, both events have been extremely well attended and the level of interest in the project has been remarkable.

“We will build upon the platform that that has been created through these events by continuing to work in partnership with a wide range of local organisations to support young people aged 16-24 to engage in training, education and employment opportunities in a way that suits them.”

    New opportunities for young people

This new project is part funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, offering personalised support to young people to remove barriers and help their progression into work, education or training.

This will include one-to-one support from personal ADTRAC mentors or NHS mental health practitioners as well as tailored training and courses designed to meet the specific needs of young people engaged in the project.

    Partnership-working

ADTRAC is led by Grŵp Llandrillo Menai across North Wales, working in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, Flintshire County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, with the support of the Department for Work and Pensions and Careers Wales.

The project will be referral based and is designed to support existing services by promoting a collaborative approach and working together with organisations across the region.

Sara Williams, ADTRAC 16-24 Regional Manager, said: “ADTRAC is a £10.4m initiative led by Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, and delivered by the six North Wales local authorities and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

“By providing access to trusted advice, support and working alongside partners and employers, ADTRAC will ensure that young adults have the best possible opportunity to overcome the barriers they face and to effectively participate in society through achieving a positive outcome.”
