Another community facility spruced up thanks to our housing improvements project…

A local community centre has been refurbished by a contractor working in partnership with Wrexham Council.

Johnstown Community Centre received the makeover as a donation from Novus Property Solutions, a contractor that has recently been installing new kitchens and bathrooms in the Johnstown area.

A new floor was installed in the main hall of the building and repainting work was also carried out.

The work was carried out as a Community Benefit scheme, which requires contractors who carry out housing improvement work for the council to give ‘something extra’ back to the local areas they are working in.

Novus have been using the centre as a site office whilst the kitchens and bathrooms work has been carried out.

‘Giving something extra’ back to the local community

As well as refurbishing the main hall, Novus recently redecorated the changing rooms for Johnstown Football Club, also part of the Community Centre, and held a family fun day for local tenants during the summer.

Operations Manager for Novus Property Solutions, Jeremy Anderson, said: “We’ve been working with Wrexham County Council for several years and are always keen to help the local communities in any way we can – whether that’s hosting a family fun day or volunteering our time to revitalise a community space. As a business, we’re committed to having a positive impact on the communities in which we operate and refurbishing the Johnstown Community Centre is a perfect example of this in action.”

Local Member for Johnstown, Cllr David Bithell, said: “Council houses all over the Johnstown area have received improvement work over the last few months and I’m delighted that the contractors have been able to give something back to this community and engage so closely with local tenants. I’m sure the refurbishment work to this busy community centre will be gratefully received by the many local groups who use it. It’s made the centre fit for the future and I’d like to thank Novus Property Solutions for doing such a great job with the work.”

A record year for housing improvement work…

The housing improvement work in Johnstown is part of our huge project to ensure we achieve the Welsh Housing Quality Standard by 2020.

A record £56.4m is being invested in this work in 2017/18 alone. This includes a £7.5m Major Repairs Allowance grant which awarded by the Welsh Government to help local authorities achieve the new standard.

The improvements include new kitchens and bathrooms, new central heating systems, electrical rewires and other internal and external improvements such as re-roofing and external wall insulation.

Local economy boosted thanks to investment

All sorts of Community Benefit schemes have been set up thanks to the investment in this improvement work. As well as refurbishing community facilities, the schemes can also include taking on local workforce and modern apprentices, purchasing supplies from local business and sponsoring local groups and sports teams.

Lead Member for Housing, Cllr David Griffiths said: “With such a large investment being made, it is so important that as much of this money as possible is pumped back into our local economy. It’s very encouraging to see so many schemes like this taking place across the county borough. This is set to continue as work to achieve the Welsh Housing Quality Standard progresses.”

Own your own little piece of Wrexham’s History – The Acton Dog

There’s a chance for you to own your own little piece of Wrexham’s history in the shape of the Acton Dog that has been created using new 3D technology thanks to engineers at Glyndwr University.

The 197 year old dog that is housed in Wrexham Museum was 3D scanned by Olivier Durieux and Arfon Hughes and 20 million points of the artefact were taken which has been used to create lovely models of the dog.

The four dogs were carved by local joiner James Edwards in 1820 and stood overlooking the gateway to the historic Acton Estate.

    “Iconic landmark in Wrexham”

Karen Harris, from Wrexham Museum and Archives, said: “We’ve been exploring ways of bringing some museum  objects into the 21st century and  as the dog is such an iconic landmark in Wrexham  we wanted to have the opportunity to tell people more about him”.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

The original dog will always be housed behind glass in Wrexham Museum but as a result of this amazing new 3D technology project, we have now been able to replicate models of him to sell in the museum shop and produce a larger replica model which we can use to educate school groups.

Each dog is just  £14.99 or £25.00 for two and is available  in 4 different finishes silver, gold, bronze and verdigris.

Contact Wrexham Museum Regent Street tel 01978 297460 or email museum@wrexham.gov.uk

Acton Hall was one of the most important houses in Wrexham whose most famous resident was the notorious Hanging Judge Jeffreys.

The gateway to the home gained the name ‘The Dogs’ and later ‘The Four Dogs’ as the greyhounds became a symbol of the town.

Copies of the dogs were produced and still guard the entrance to the Acton Park estate today. This is a reminder of an important part of Wrexham’s local identity and heritage.
