Supporting our City of Culture bid

Word Play is part of a huge programme of community events taking place across the county borough to support Wrecsam’s bid to become UK City of Culture in 2025.

The event has been developed by local poet and activist Evrah Rose, and Dave Acton of Larynx Entertainment working with Wrexham Council, The Venture and Assemble Play – part of the Turner prize winning collective Assemble.

Artists Dusk (Adam Pritchard), Georgina Caiger and Natalie Griffiths have been commissioned to create street art for the event, which children will be able to contribute to.

    The ‘UK capital of play’

Evrah Rose, poet, author and trustee of The Venture adventure playground in Caia Park, said: “We want Word Play to represent the commonalities between play and the arts – especially street art and hip-hop which can be seen as marginalised.

“We want to uplift these cultural practices because we know they have real value in terms of wellbeing and self-expression.”

Ian Bancroft, Wrexham Council Chief Executive, said: “Wrexham’s unique play provision and adventure playgrounds have been highlighted as a key aspect of the county’s bid for City of Culture in 2025.

“We see ourselves as the UK capital of play. This event showcases the innovative playwork happening here and provides a glimpse of a vision for the future of play in Wrexham.”

May 5 is Polling Day – Please use your vote and stay safe

As we approach the local election polling day we’re encouraging everyone to use their vote and make plans to go to the polling station on 5 May.

We’re also asking you to remain aware that Coronavirus hasn’t gone away so we still need to be careful when we do go to vote.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

    • Wales is currently as Alert Level Zero, however the health and well-being of all staff, candidates and voters is extremely important.  And with this in mind the Returning Officer is implementing the following to minimise the risk of spreading coronavirus at all polling stations: Perspex screens, wipes, antibacterial spray and hand sanitiser will be in place in all stations.
    • There will be disposable masks for use.
    • Voters are asked to bring their own pen/pencil but there will be a supply of pencils that will be sanitised after every use.
    • All touch points will be regularly sanitised, including voting booths.
    • Face coverings will be by personal choice for staff and voters.
    • There will also be posters in place advising voters not to enter the polling station with Coronavirus symptoms.

Ian Bancroft, Returning Officer, said, “Many of us are now going about our normal business as Covid restrictions are lifted but we all still need to be mindful that Coronavirus is still circulating and still poses a risk to some individuals.

“Please follow the guidance above in order to ensure that the election takes place with the minimum of risk to everyone attending a polling station.”

  • Do you know if your ward is uncontested? (And what does uncontested mean?)

Do you know if your ward is uncontested? (And what does uncontested mean?)

Local elections are being held in Wrexham on May 5, when you will be able to vote who you would like to be your local councillor. But what if there is only one person standing in your area?

Everyone in Wrexham County Borough has received a polling card, but there are eight wards where there is only one person standing. These are called ‘uncontested’ wards, and the person standing is guaranteed the seat.

So…if you live in one of the following areas, where the seats are ‘uncontested’, you do not need to go along to vote on polling day:

    • Cartrefle
    • Chirk South
    • Dyffryn Ceiriog
    • Esclusham
    • Garden Village
    • Holt
    • Stansty
    • Borras

**May 5 is also the day for electing community councillors. All except one of the areas listed above is ‘uncontested’ for both councillor and community councillor seats, that is Caia Park CC – Cartrefle Ward. So, if you live in Caia Park CC – Cartrefle Ward you are still able to vote for your community councillors at the polling station on May 5.**

All wards and candidates, including ‘uncontested’ seats, are listed on the current elections and vacancies page of the council’s website.

  • Need tree work doing in your garden? Make sure you use a professional tree surgeon

Need tree work doing in your garden? Make sure you use a professional tree surgeon

Trading Standards has received a few complaints recently which have left homeowners out of pocket after cold callers took on tree work which was either carried out incompetently or the trader vanished with the money having done little or no work.

Cold calling for tree work does happen usually after bad weather but it can happen at any time. The consequences of having unqualified, uninsured workers pruning or felling trees in your garden could though be even worse.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

If work is not done properly there is a real risk of injury to people, damage to property and serious harm to your tree. As the home owner, you could be liable if other people or their property are affected.

If you need work doing, seek the services of a professional arborist (tree surgeon) and make some key checks before you agree to work being done.

All professional competent businesses will make a site visit to discuss your needs and to agree what work is needed and what work will be carried out.

Waste removal is a significant part of the work and the cost so make sure you understand exactly what to expect. Ask for a written quote detailing what has been discussed and agreed. Ask to see evidence of insurance and make sure you have full business details, name, address etc. before you agree to work. Seek recommendations from trusted family or friends.

“Anyone needing tree work should do their homework”

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead said, “Good quality, safe tree work is not cheap but don’t be tempted by cold callers offering to do a quick, cheap job. At best you could end up with poor work and/or a mountain of debris to be cleared.

“It’s always important to take great care when appointing contractor to do any kind of work but with tree work, the consequences of letting a cold caller, wielding a chainsaw, loose in your garden could be disastrous.

“Anyone needing tree work should do their homework, get help from friends or family if you need to and make sure your contractor is competent and insured.”
