  • £2.8 million funding package secured for damaged road in Newbridge

£2.8 million funding package secured for damaged road in Newbridge

Wrexham Council has been awarded £2.8 million to carry out vital repairs to the B5605 in Newbridge.

The road was severely damaged in Storm Christoph last year, and has remained closed ever since.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

It’s been a challenging situation for local communities, with many motorists having to drive miles out of their way.

As well as providing a daily travel route for local people, the road also serves as a diversion when the A483 bypass is closed.

However, following complex geo-technical surveys and cost analysis, the council recently submitted a business case to the Welsh Government to help fund the repairs.

It’s now been confirmed that Ministers have approved the business case, paving the way for work to begin later this year.

    Vital route for local people

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: “Repairing this road will make a massive difference to people in Newbridge, Cefn Mawr and Rhosymedre – as well as surrounding communities like Plas Madoc, Ruabon and Chirk.

“It’s not a straight-forward road-repair – the damage is substantial and we’ve had to undertake a lot of in-depth geo-technical assessments and cost analysis.

“But we’re delighted we’ve been able to secure this funding, and look forward to reopening this key piece of infrastructure.”

  • Trading Standards tackle Rogue Traders in our villages

Trading Standards tackle Rogue Traders in our villages

Our Trading Standards team were out and about in Wrexham recently as part of their mission to clamp down on the problem of rogue traders operating in the county.

Working with partners from North Wales Police and Natural Resources Wales, officers visited villages in and around Wrexham town, to speak to Traders carrying out work for residents.

Natural Resources Wales spoke to several businesses that didn’t have  a Waste Carriers Licence and these have now been issued with advice and guidance.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Anyone operating without a licence cannot use the Household Recycling Centres and any rubbish removed often ends up being fly tipped causing a blight on the county borough. Anyone whose rubbish is traced back to them could face a fine and prosecution.

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said, “Legitimate businesses welcome our officers stepping in to stop rogue traders in their tracks as they take business away from them.

“It’s important that any trader working in the county borough operates legally and within the law. This protects individuals from being scammed by over priced work and often unfinished or shoddy workmanship.”

If you are a business and you would like to check whether you are compliant, click on this link for free and impartial legal guidance on Trading Standards law explained in basic, concise or detailed form.

We also recommend businesses seek legal advice from a solicitor or legal representative if assistance is needed interpreting the law. For more information on permits/licences for waste please visit Natural Resources Wales.

  • One week left to register to vote in upcoming elections

One week left to register to vote in upcoming elections

With only one week to go until the voter registration deadline for next month’s local elections, anyone wanting to vote must make sure they are registered in time.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on 14 April. You can apply online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes just five minutes.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

On Thursday 5 May voters will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at a local level. This year residents in Wrexham will be voting to select councillors who will represent their local area and residents, and contribute to the development of policies in areas such as transport, social care and housing.

Ian Bancroft, Returning Officer for Wrexham, said “With only one week to go, time is running out to make sure you can take part in the local elections.

These elections are an important opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Wrexham. In order to be able to vote, residents must be on the electoral register. So if you’re not registered by midnight 14 April, you won’t be able to take part.”

Rhydian Thomas, Head of the Electoral Commission Wales, said, “You can only take part in the May elections if you are registered to vote, and time is running out. It’s quick and easy – it takes just five minutes online at www.gov.uk/registertovote.

“If you have recently turned 16 or moved home, it is particularly important that you make sure you are correctly registered to vote.

“If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don’t need to take any action.”

Voters have a range of options – they can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 19 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on 26 April.

For information on elections in their area, how to register to vote, or how to apply to vote by post or by proxy, voters can visit www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voter. This page will continue to be updated ahead of the polls.

  • New path now links Erddig Country Park, Marchwiel and the Clywedog Trail

New path now links Erddig Country Park, Marchwiel and the Clywedog Trail

Our Public Rights of Way section has been busy restoring a path that now links Erddig Country Park, Marchwiel and the Clywedog Trail.

The 30 metre path now includes new and easy to use pedestrial gates and a  10 metre footbridge.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

The path had been neglected for some time with no visible route evident on the ground and following discussions with the National Trust it was agreed that a long term solution was needed to tackle poor drainage.

An old pipe crossing damaged during Storm Ciara in 2020 had to be removed from Gyfelia Brook before work on the new footbridge could begin.

MarchwielNow complete the path forms part of a circular walking route which links the surrounding countryside with Erddig Country Park, Marchwiel and the Clywedog Trail.

We hope you’ll enjoy the improved public right of way and the beautiful area that’s part of this Site of Special Scientific Interest.
