  • Look out for vulnerable friends and relatives

Look out for vulnerable friends and relatives

With Covid-19 cases increasing nationwide due to the Omicron variant, we’re asking the public to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives, who may be ill themselves or their usual visitors are self-isolating.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “If people have neighbours, friends or relatives who are unwell or are left isolated, they are encouraged to contact them safely and see if they need help with shopping or other support.

“You may be the only person contacting them so they will appreciate your kindness and consideration. The impact of self-isolation on those living alone or on vulnerable people can be very difficult. We want to make sure people do not feel vulnerable or isolated and encourage them to accept help from family, friends or those who are known to them.

“However, it is vital to ensure that if someone is self-isolating due to Covid-19 not to come into close contact with them, so deliveries of food or medicines should be left on the doorstep and contacting friends or relatives by phone or online is a good way to check on them without risking the virus spreading further.”

People are urged to help support the vaccination effort and can book online or attend designated drop in clinics to get their first, second or booster jabs.

The online booking service can be found at: https://bcuhb.nhs.wales/covid-19/covid-19-vaccinations/covid-19-booster-programme-online-booking/

It’s essential that we all do everything we can to prevent COVID from spreading, this includes regular handwashing and sanitising, keep your distance, wear a face covering, and always open the windows if you’re meeting people indoors.

Take a lateral flow test before going out – whether that’s shopping; visiting friends or family; going to any crowded or busy place; or before travelling.

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Council welcomes feedback from Estyn as school makes progress

Council welcomes feedback from Estyn as school makes progress

Wrexham Council has welcomed news that a local primary school has been removed from monitoring.

In 2019, Ysgol Sant Dunawd in Bangor-on-Dee was placed under review by the education inspectorate Estyn, after some areas were found to be “adequate and in need of improvement.”

However, the school has now been removed from monitoring after making progress.

Councillor Phil Wynn, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Education, says:

“Ysgol Sant Dunawd provides a wonderful learning environment for its children, and I’m extremely proud of the positive feedback from Estyn which reflects the tireless commitment and hard work of staff, governors, pupils and parents.

“Like every other educational establishment, the school will have faced a lot of additional challenges over the past two years due to the Covid pandemic, so it’s particularly impressive that they’ve been able to make such positive progress in difficult times.

“I’d like to thank the head teacher Sara Tate and everyone at the school for their tremendous work.”

  • Sporting achievements score civic recognition

    Sporting achievements score civic recognition

Two Wrexham Council civic recognition awards have been given to individuals who’ve made positive impacts within the community through their passion for sport.

Delwyn Derrick and Steve Williams were commended for all their achievements and contributions during a recent full council meeting on December 22.

    From grassroots to greatness

Delwyn Derrick grew up near Bellevue Park and has many fond memories of playing football in the well-known park. It was thanks to his endless hours spent in the park that Delwyn had the opportunity to meet many different people from different cultures and ways of life. Whilst meeting people from other countries there, he met a large number of students studying in Wrexham Glyndwr University as part of the Erasmus Project.

Fuelled by such inspiration, Delwyn founded the first ever league football team to be registered as multi-ethnic and inclusion specific.

With all the drive and ambition to create an inclusive team for all, 2017 saw the aptly named Bellevue Park FC take off. Training began in earnest and there was no stopping them.

    A team for all

Bellevue FC consists of players who come from BAME backgrounds, foreign nationals and people with mental health issues or varying degrees of learning difficulties. The main aim for the team is to ensure the inclusion, wellbeing and support of those in the community who can feel marginalised.

Delwyn grows and supports the team on a voluntary basis, and has taken the grassroots football team to the North East Wales Football League in the Pyramid System.

Delwyn has received lots of awards, including Offa Community Council’s citizen of the year and BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year. 2021 also saw Delwyn receive the prestigious St David’s Award with Welsh Government.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Brian Cameron said: “The praise, awards and success Delwyn Derrick has achieved so far, in such a short space of time, is nothing short of inspirational.

“I wish you all the best for many, many more years of good fortune”.

    Humble beginnings

Also being recognised for his incredible contributions to the community was recently appointed Football Association of Wales President, Steve Williams.

Having grown up in the local village of Cefn Mawr, Steve demonstrated a very keen eye and talent as a football administrator at a very young age. At age 18, he became the secretary of his local club, Cefn Albion.

In 1992, Cefn Albion faced a merger with Druids United, which resulted in the team we now know today as JD Cymru Premier Club Cefn Druids. It was during this merger that Steve played a key role in the proceedings and he was put in good stead for the world of football politics.

    Tipped for the top

Steve quickly caught the attention of former FAW Councillor, Mr Jack Evans.

With the help of Mr Evans and his support, Steve was elected onto the FAW in 1997. Steve’s excellent reputation continued to grow and he established himself as a highly regarded and well respected figure in the football community across Wales.

    A walk in the park

Steve played an integral part in the construction and development of the Wrexham based Colliers Park. The facility is renowned in the area for providing high-class training facilities.

Whilst he spent time on the International Committee, Steve had the privilege to work with the late Gary Speed.

During his time as President, Steve is dedicated to being a hands on figure with many forward thinking ideas and fresh ambitions for the FAW.

    Keeping the torch burning

As well as applying his expertise to his new role, Steve continues to give as much as he possibly can to his community and ensures the history of Welsh football continues to inspire future generations.

He kept this going recently when he made a very generous contribution to the new Welsh football museum, which is going to be housed in the Wrexham museum and archives building on Regent Street.

Steve donated several items of football memorabilia that included the Wales Premier Cup. These will all be displayed pride of place for fans and aspiring players alike can enjoy.

During the meeting, Steve was kind enough to show one of the incredible items, a shirt worn by non-other than Gareth Bale.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Brian Cameron said: “It is because of his hard work ethic, determination and contribution to not only his community, but many across Wales, that we recognise Steve today with this civic award.

“It also serves as a great opportunity to thank him for his contribution to the new museum in the form of his most generously gifted items.”

  • Make it your new year’s resolution to stay safe and secure

Make it your new year’s resolution to stay safe and secure

You’ll want to pay attention to this advice from Wrexham Trading Standards:

If you’re going to make one change this new year, make it one that impacts on your finances and home safety.

When we’re in our own homes, we have a sense of security that criminals may choose to prey upon. These criminals can operate at the end of a telephone call, by way of letter through the post, an email to your computer, a text to your phone, a leaflet through your letterbox, or by a knock at the door.

Criminals under any of these guises are after one thing – your money.

DON’T GET SCAMMED BY FRAUDSTERS! SIGN UP FOR TIPS AND ALERTS ON SCAMS IN YOUR AREA

The money you’ve worked hard to earn. The money you’ve set aside for a rainy day, a holiday, or perhaps treats for the grandkids. These criminals haven’t earnt the right to be entitled to any part of your money…but it won’t stop them trying.

Every time someone wants your card details, or for you to sign up to something you don’t want/need; stop and take five. Never agree to anything in your own home without taking time out to consider it first, or speak to a family member or friend. It’s very cliché, but use the ‘trust no-one’ approach and question everything.

By remembering that we didn’t ask for the phone call, or the knock on the door, and then politely declining; we’ve dealt with it. We’ve stopped the criminal in their tracks. We’ve protected ourselves in our home. We’ve kept our money safe.

Remember, legitimate businesses and trusted local traders often don’t cold call and they won’t ask for cash up front.

Wrexham Trading Standards work in partnership with North Wales Police to ensure you’re kept safe.

If you want to report something you think is suspicious, you can also contact either Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133 or North Wales Police on 101.

Wrexham Play Sufficiency Innovation Grant 2021-22

This short term grants programme has been set up in response to the Welsh Government recently making some funding available to support children’s play and specifically the Welsh Play Sufficiency Duty.

The purpose of this grant’s programme is therefore to improve children’s (including teenager’s) opportunities for play with the aim of helping to secure sufficient opportunities for play across the county borough.

The grants programme is open to any organisations or groups working with or in support of children and their play in Wrexham.

Applications can be made for up to £2,000, however depending on the demand for funding and the suitability of applications received the WCBC Play and Youth Support Team may decide to award projects less or more than initially requested, where appropriate.
