  • An exhibition celebrating 20 years of a personality-packed jewellery brand

An exhibition celebrating 20 years of a personality-packed jewellery brand

We are excited to share with you details of our next exhibition, Misshapes: The Making of Tatty Devine.

On Friday 24th September from 6pm, we welcome all members of the public to take a first look at the exhibition. The exhibition then continues from 25th September until 13th November 2021.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

This exhibition is the first about the design duo, Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden. We are privileged to have Harriet attend the launch and she will give a free talk about Tatty Devine’s practice as part of the evening’s events. This will be an unique opportunity to hear directly from one of the UK’s most celebrated designers.

The next day, Harriet will also be leading a jewellery making workshop. Details on what to expect from the workshop how to book a place can be found here.

    Ahead of the curve

Tatty Devine’s statement jewellery is always ahead of the curve. Their jewellery tells stories and generates conversation. This summer Misshapes: The making of Tatty Devine, will consider the power of creativity and innovative British design and making, alongside the glamour and humour that Tatty Devine are known for.

The exhibition is about the design duo, Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden, who met at Chelsea College of Art and founded Tatty Devine when they graduated in 1999. They soon started trading from a market stall in east London and developed a signature style that saw them lauded in Vogue and stocked in Harvey Nichols and Whistles within the year. They discovered laser-cut acrylic on a trip to New York in 2001. On their return, they invested in a laser-cutting machine, rarely used in jewellery at that time, which then gave them a creative freedom to push the boundaries. Something they continue to do to this day.

    Playful personality-packed jewellery

In the early years, Tatty Devine’s DIY, unknowingly anarchic approach resonated with an industry and public who were hungry for something different from the commercialised, mass-produced products on offer. Turning disposable objects like guitar plectrums and cake decorations into playful personality-packed jewellery resonated with people and led to fans all over the world, as well as collaborations with musicians, artists and fashion designers.

20 years after pioneering attention-grabbing laser cut jewellery, all their pieces are still made by hand in the UK.  They remain culturally relevant as they continue to design bold pieces for campaigns close to their hearts, such as Fawcett Society, Comic Relief and Battersea Cats and Dogs Home, and they are passionate advocates for the power of creativity.

Misshapes will feature over 100 pieces from the past 20 years, from the early leather cuffs and piano belts to giant two metre versions of their ‘greatest hits’ including a huge lobster, parrot and dinosaur, alongside sketchbooks, ephemera and two new films. Also newer pieces that show how Tatty Devine continues to embrace technology and cultural shifts.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety said: “We are delighted to welcome another major Crafts Council touring exhibition to Wrexham. Tatty Devine have built up a huge following all over the country over the last 20 years and are now among the UK’s most celebrated designers, however you won’t need to be familiar with their story to enjoy this exhibition. It’s a playful and colourful collection of quirky and iconic creations, over 100 in all, so there will be plenty to see and enjoy for all ages.”

  • Our Food Waste Survey is now open – take part to help us improve our service

Our Food Waste Survey is now open – take part to help us improve our service

We have a brand new Food Waste Survey for residents to complete, and we’re asking you to take part to help us improve the service we provide in Wrexham.

We’re pleased to be launching our Food Waste Survey during Recycle Week 2021 (September 20-26). It’s a short survey that should only take around 5 minutes of your time to complete, so please take part if you can.

If you don’t recycle all your food waste, please don’t be afraid to share this with us – it’s not a test! We know there’s still a considerable amount of food waste going in general waste bins and we would simply like to try and find out the different reasons for this.

It’s a really good opportunity to have your say, so please get involved and let us know what you think. The survey is live until November 1.

TAKE PART IN OUR FOOD WASTE SURVEY

“We want to hear from as many people as possible”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We really encourage everyone to complete our new Food Waste Survey. Whether you’re recycling all – or none – of your food waste we want to hear from as many people as possible. It’s not a test, so please try to be accurate with the information you give. We’re just looking to learn more about why people do or don’t recycle their leftovers.

“The survey will be live until November 1, and it doesn’t take long to complete, so please take part if you can. The information you provide will be used to develop the service in Wrexham, so it’s definitely worthwhile letting us know what you think. Thanks.”

    [button color=”” size=”large” type=”square_outlined” target=”new” link=” http://www.yourvoicewrexham.net/survey/1353″] TAKE PART IN THE FOOD WASTE SURVEY [/button]

Take part at the recycling centres!

Planning on visiting one of the three recycling centres in Wrexham over the next few weeks? If so, you’ll be asked if you’d like to answer a couple of short questions about your food waste on arrival by the attendants at the sites.

Taking part is entirely optional, so don’t worry if you don’t want to, just politely decline. But if you’re comfortable answering the questions during your visit we’d really appreciate it.

    What we’re looking for…

To give you a brief idea what the survey is about, some of the things we’re hoping to find include:

    • Your habits around recycling food waste
    • Reasons why food might get wasted
    • What motivates residents to recycle food waste
    • Feedback on our collections – what we’re doing well, as well as areas we can improve
    • Ideas for collection points where people can pick up our free caddy liners

When completing the survey, you may even pick up a few ideas and tips from some of the options in the questions. For example, have you ever considered creating a meal plan for your week to avoid overbuying and wasting food? Or have you thought about how you store your food? These are just a couple of things that might help to lessen the amount of food your household wastes.

  • Communities for Work Plus gets Joe into a new career 👍

Communities for Work Plus gets Joe into a new career 👍

The Communities for Work Plus programme here in Wrexham is going from strength to strength and has continued to operate online throughout the pandemic. Since last August it has helped 280 people move into work!

Joe Cade is just one excellent example of how the programme has opened a new door to a new career and a new job.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

Joe was referred to Communities for Work Plus in September of last year and was unsure of which path to follow for a future career.

Joe was quickly supported by Julie Edwards, one of our mentors at Communities for Work Plus, Joe said “Julie was great, she recommended a Fork Lift Truck training course which I hadn’t considered before. I wasn’t sure at first, but she reassured me and I’m glad that she did.”

Julie said, ”Joe embraced a completely new career direction from his original plan and even though it has been a very difficult year he took on new challenges which he’d never even thought of.”

The project works with Gatewen Training Services to provide some of our vocational training courses such as Fork Lift Truck training for warehouse work and Construction Skills Certification Scheme for the construction industry.

Julian Hughes Company Director at Gatewen Training Services said “Joe is now joining the delivery team at Gatewen Training Services through the Government’s Kick Start scheme, with a view to completing the Level 3 Award in Education and Training and the Fork Lift Training Instructor programme.”

Cllr Terry Griffiths, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration said “Joe shows what can be achieved by signing up to the Communities for Work Plus programme.

“We’ve focused on short training courses that target local skill shortages and therefore lead quickly into employment through close working relationships with local employers. This is a great story that shows that our approach is working”

Communities for Work Plus has worked with 19 employers, including JCB to provide employment opportunities or tailored employment support to our participants.

Since August 2020, 280 people have been supported into employment by the programme, 63 people have gained work related qualifications including CSCS Cards, Fork Lift Truck licences, First Aid, Asbestos Awareness, SIA Licence (Security), STILLs (Teaching Assistants), LGV Training and Social Care and at least  43 people have gone into employment as a direct result of attending this funded training.

Craig Weeks, General Manager JCB Transmissions Wrexham, said “It’s great to be able to work collaboratively with Wrexham CBC and Communities for Work Plus to support local people back into employment.”

These courses are sometimes the first qualification that some people have gained since leaving school and are a great confidence boost to continue on to other training or go straight into work.

Several have been supported by an IT loan scheme which has helped them access and complete online training. This scheme is offered through Digital Communities Wales who provide the loan of equipment on a short term basis to help reduce digital exclusion.

How to get in touch and on your way to a new career

It’s now easier than ever to access the programme and receive employment support from Communities for Work Plus.

    • You can text CFW to 66777 to access a link to the Communities for Work Plus referral form. One of the Triage Officers will then get in touch regarding the help that is needed.

  • Step It Up this Recycle Week! Be Mighty. Recycle.

Step It Up this Recycle Week! Be Mighty. Recycle.

Wales is already the third best recycling nation in the world, and the Mighty Mission to get us to number one continues into Recycle Week 2021 from 20 to 26 September.

This year’s theme is ‘Step It Up this Recycle Week’, which aims to encourage everyone to pull together and recycle more of the right things more often. In Wrexham, last year our recycling figure was 66.86% (April 2020-March 2021), and for the first quarter of this year (April 2021-June2021) we recycled 70.41%.

Recycling plays an essential role in tackling climate change and it’s a simple thing that everyone can do to help make a real impact. We’re fully supportive of this in Wrexham and we have our own Decarbonisation Action Plan as we look to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

Recycling is now the norm in Wales, with over 92% of us recycling regularly as part of our daily routine. We’re recycling fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells and plate scrapings in our food caddies; recycling from every room including the bathroom and bedroom, and recycling tricky items such as empty aerosols.

But we need your help to get us to number one by recycling more of the right things more often, together.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We should be proud of our recycling efforts, but there is still more we can do. Almost half of us are still not recycling everything we can, so if we’re to help Wales reach the coveted top spot we need to step it up and recycle even more. Together we can help get Wales to number one and protect the planet by recycling more of the right things, every time.”

Mighty tips to get Wales to number one

    • Recycling our food waste is one of the easiest ways to give our recycling rate a big boost. Put any food waste, however small, in your food waste caddy to ensure it gets collected every week.
    • Recycling doesn’t stop at the kitchen door; remember to recycle from other rooms too. You’d be amazed just how much bathroom waste such as empty shampoo, conditioner, hand soap and shower gel bottles can be recycled.
    • Most people know that water bottles, cans, and paper and card can be recycled, but don’t forget that you can also recycle more unusual items such as empty aerosols.
    • Squash your cans, pots, tubs and trays to save space in your recycling bag, bin, box or caddy. Give them a quick rinse when you are washing up before recycling them.
    • If Wales is going to get to number one, we all have to play our part. This means spreading the Mighty Mission on social media by sharing your recycling pics and tips using #BeMightyRecycle and #RecycleWeek.

Next members will be asked to approve the Social Services Annual Directors Report for 2020/21.

The annual report is a legal requirement and must reference both Adult Social Care and Children’s Social Care. The report includes a review of performance and an update on the improvement priorities set for that year. It also sets out the areas of improvement for the following year (2021/22).

Members will then be asked to approve another 5 year additional licensing scheme for Homes Multiple Occupation (HOMs) following a recent consultation undertaken.

The additional licensing scheme aims to improve housing conditions and management standards in HMO’s throughout Wrexham.

Whether to grant a 25 year lease to Rhostyllen Football Club will also be considered at the meeting.

The lease will be for land off Vicarage Road which is currently managed by our Environment and Technical Department.

If the lease is agreed the football club will then be able to obtain funding and secure access to various funding streams in order to improve the facilities within the area for the benefit of the club and local community.

  • Residents are getting to know RITA in care homes across Wrexham

Residents are getting to know RITA in care homes across Wrexham

Our Commissioning and Contracts Team has collaborated with My Improvement Network to deliver a number of RITA devices to care providers, with funding from Welsh Government’s Intermediate Care Fund (ICF).

    What is RITA?

RITA (Reminiscence Interactive Therapy Activity) is an interactive touch screen solution that provides a platform of reminiscence, using a 24” monitor, which can be wheeled around, or a 10” tablet, which can be used on a 1-1 basis.

In total, 21 care providers across Wrexham applied and were successful in being issued with a RITA. It gives those living with dementia access to apps, games and other leisure activities as part of their care.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

The system can be personalised to an individual’s needs and is powerful for continuity of care.

There are digital life stories that can be summarised in a book and a number of different settings – sensory, relaxation, mealtime, sleep therapy, digital garden and many more.

Whilst the primary purpose of RITA is to enhance quality of life and wellbeing, other reported outcomes for individuals using RITA can’t be ignored, such as reduction in falls, reduced anxiety and improved experiences for the individual, their families and the staff.

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Adult Social Care, says: “We’re really pleased with the impact the RITA devices are having in care homes across Wrexham. The devices allow people to engage in meaningful activities and conversations, improving their wellbeing and quality of life. They’ve been a real hit, and care providers are seeing big improvements in lots of people, which is fantastic news.”

    Feedback so far

    Bev Griffiths, Manager, Emral House:
“We offered the use of the RITA to a gentleman who is Italian and who is confined to his bed. He was able to listen to Italian music and other clips (RITA is available in a number of languages) that were of interest to him. This gentleman would normally demand the attention of the staff but once he was given the RITA we did not hear from him, now when I see him he asks me for my phone (referring to RITA tablet). What a difference this has made in such a short time.”

Julie, Activities Co-ordinator, Chirk Court Care Home:
“This is brilliant, already the residents are getting the benefit from accessing a number of different activities on the RITA. We recently used it for a sing-a-long, playing songs from a range of countries and the mood of the residents lifted straight away.”

Quote from a 101-year-old woman: “Isn’t it amazing technology now.” She particularly loved the sing-a-long and aquarium.

    Lisa Fox, Penley Rainbow Centre:
“This has been well received by the people who attend the centre. We have so far accessed quiz time, reminiscence music, and whack-a-mole is proving to be popular! We are busy creating personal profiles of individuals that is bespoke to them and a collection of their favourite things on RITA that they enjoy.”

Andrea, Activity Co-ordinator, Stansty House Care Home:
“It’s been a great opportunity having a RITA, and I can use this daily to interact with the residents, and it gives me the opportunity to do something different. This was offered to a lady who is bedbound and unable to join the other residents, she enjoyed songs, movie clips and her mood lifted straight away. The residents are enjoying the music keyboard, painter and we have recently assembled the shed RemPod that we loan from the Commissioning and Contracts Team.”

Alison Langford, Activity Co-ordinator, Penygarth Care Home:
“RITA has gone down a storm with the residents, here is Derek reminiscing about the olden days….”

    Linda enjoying snakes and ladders…

Boosters for people aged 50 and over

Earlier this week, the JCVI recommended a booster jab for people aged 50 and over.

The booster should be given at least six months after a person’s second dose.

A booster has also been recommended for people living in care homes for older adults, as well as frontline health and social care workers.

It’s also been recommended for those aged 16 to 49 with underlying health conditions, and adult household contacts of people who are immunosuppressed.

If you’re eligible, you don’t need to book a booster appointment – you’ll be contacted when it’s your turn.

Read more on the local health board website.

Single dose for 12 to 15 year olds

Welsh Government has also confirmed that young people aged 12 to 15 will be offered one dose of Pfizer.

As well as providing marginal health benefit, this will help reduce the spread of the virus and minimise further disruption to education and communities.

The local health board will begin vaccinating this age group on Monday, October 4, and will be writing to parents with more info.

Parents and carers will need to provide consent.
