  • Roll-out due for new food caddy liners

Roll-out due for new food caddy liners

Last year, households in Wrexham recycled more than 2,000 tonnes of food waste.

That’s 2,000 tonnes that would otherwise have gone to landfill, and was instead turned into very handy compost for parks, gardens and allotments.

We couldn’t have done it without your help – and we’re very grateful.

THESE TWO SIMPLE STEPS COULD TURN YOU INTO A RECYCLING SUPERHERO…

To keep things going, we’ll have a new round of compostable liners delivered to all houses with food waste caddies.

Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government, we’ll deliver new compostable food caddy-liners to households across the county borough throughout October and November..

    That’s about 60,000 homes – so the roll-out should over a month.

Each household will receive a complimentary roll of 52 liners, which will last the average household for about 17 weeks.

Any residents who need more liners can just tie one to the handle of their kerbside caddy on collection day.

    No food too small

Remember – there’s no amount of food waste that’s too small to go in the caddy.

Of course, the best thing to do with food is to avoid wasting it in the first place.

But obviously, with things like banana skins, egg shells, tea bags and plate scrapings, it can be unavoidable.

But just make sure you get them in the caddy – they’ll all make great compost!

And you can even recycle things like mouldy or out-of-date food, and ready meals (so long as they’re removed from their packaging).

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We’re very grateful to all householders in Wrexham who have helped us maintain these rates of recycling, and food waste plays a key part in that.

“Households can generate quite a lot of food waste, so any of that which goes into compost instead of simply being put in the black bin is a good thing. We hope the provision of the new liners will help people to continue the good trends that have already been set and keep pushing us to meet the 70 per cent targets.”

Want a physical job? Love working outdoors? Read this…

Sometimes it’s difficult to find the time to stay physically fit. If you’re in work all day, the idea of exercising before or after work isn’t always very appealing…

But what if you could have an active job where you could stay fit while you work?

Yes, these do exist, and we’ve got some that are suitable for both men and women.

    Interested? Read on…

We’re currently recruiting for a number of Streetscene operatives. These are physical jobs and they involve working outdoors. So if you’re the type of person who’d prefer to be out and about rather than confined to an office, this could be a good fit.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

A large amount of these are loading jobs, working in refuse and recycling collection.

Refuse loaders pull the black or green bins to the refuse lorry and tip in via lifts before returning them to where they came from.

Recycling loaders take the boxes/bags of recycling to the recycling vehicle and tip them into the various compartments before returning them.

These are physical roles and you’ll do a lot of walking too.

Streetscene operatives also provide a range of other services, including highway maintenance, cemetery and cremation services, street cleansing and grounds maintenance.

So whichever of these you’re tasked with, you’ll be working outdoors and staying active in the process.

And get this. Working for a council can be a good career option – it usually comes with a pension, good leave allowance and relative stability.

If this sounds like you, please click on the link below to apply 🙂

The closing date is Friday, October 5.

We can almost hear the ‘Rocky’ theme playing in the background 😉

  • Fields in Trust Give Thumbs Up to Wrexham

Fields in Trust Give Thumbs Up to Wrexham

Wrexham played host to some special visitors recently when the Fields in Trust Committee met at Bellevue Park – they usually only meet in Cardiff.

    Why Wrexham?

Well, it seems they’re very impressed with the amount of land it has protected from future development by having them designated as “Fields in Trust” and wanted to hear more about the advantages of protecting land – and also if there were any problems with land once protected.

In Wrexham we have 30 sites, the majority dedicated between 2007 and 2014 – with one of the most recent being land at Bellevue Park as a Centenary Field in commemoration of the First World War.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

Lead Member for Environment and Transport, Cllr David A Bithell, said: “It was very interesting to speak with Fields in Trust and also to know that the work we have done here in Wrexham is recognised at national level. We hope to see them back here very soon and would always offer them a warm welcome.”

Fields in Trust Chairman Brynmor Williams said: “We are extremely grateful for the sites the council has protected with us over the years and the excellent relationship we have and long may that continue. I am hopeful we will be able to move forward other projects that can be used to enhance land in Wrexham.”

  • Gallery 01 – looking good there, Ashley!

Gallery 01 – looking good there, Ashley!

We recently went to meet one of Wrexham’s newest independent shop owners, Ashley Vaughan Roberts, who has opened Gallery 01 in the South Arcade of Tŷ Pawb – a delightful ladies clothing and accessories shop that really has people talking!

Ashley has always worked in retail and over the years he has come to know what works and what doesn’t – his customer service skills are excellent and his taste is pretty cool .

Ashley explained to us that Wrexham has a special place in his heart and he appreciates how much it has changed, but he loves what’s been done with Tŷ Pawb and he’s getting fabulous feedback from his customers who like the concept, the food court and the way it’s laid out.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

Lots of his customers are finding Gallery 01 via social media and by just walking past. He sells dresses, all under £40 by really competitive brands that aren’t available in Chester or Liverpool – you’d have to go all the way to Manchester to see the same brand.

He also stocks candles, home fragrances, jewellery and bath and body products. They’re sell for a wide range of prices that would suit most pockets and if bought as a gift would show that little bit of extra thought and effort had gone into it.

One of the reasons Ashley chose to open up in Wrexham was the amount of events and festivals that are taking place here. When they’re on, people come from across the region and as a result many visit his shop – where they’re sure to receive a very warm welcome.

He agrees there’s still a lot to learn but “that’s retail – customer’s habits change and we all have to keep up!

We asked how Ashley marketed himself during these very difficult retail times – his response was a big high five for social media. He’s on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – with Twitter coming out on top!

So if you’ve got a special occasion coming up or just want to treat yourself why not pay Ashley at Gallery 01 a visit

We thank Ashley for his time and we wish him well for his future in Wrexham.

  • A summer of new skills

    A summer of new skills

“I have never had anyone say how amazing I am, and to have someone have so much faith in me is just something I have never had before.”

A programme of confidence-building and wellbeing activities for young people has been running this summer and has met with positive feedback.

The ADTRAC team have been encouraging participants involved in the project to get out and meet new people by taking part in drop-in sessions, confidence-building sessions and day trips. Those involved have been building their resilience whilst developing new skills within a supportive environment.

This team works with young people aged 16-24 years who are experience barriers that prevent them from progressing into either education, employment or training. The team works to remove those barriers.

    Life Skills

The fun activities have been aimed at increasing motivation whilst developing time-keeping, team-work, communication and other essential life skills. The group have taken part in mindfulness and meditation sessions as well as bush-craft and survival skills run by Wild Elements. Activities have enabled the young people to practise following instructions and safety measures with the ADTRAC participants making their own bird boxes using tools.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

The ADTRAC team have also organised days out to Erddig, Loggerheads and Talacre Beach to help participants build positive relationships and work as part of a team. Other activities have included photography, mask-making and rounders in the park. Feedback from the summer sessions has been very positive with the young people enjoying learning skills whilst being in the outdoors. One of the young people recently said:

“I have been working with ADTRAC a number of months now and I haven’t looked back! I have been able to meet new people through a volunteering course, confidence building day, Loggerheads and the Talacre beach trip. My mentor has always made me feel so special and good about myself. I have never had anyone say how amazing I am and to have someone have so much faith in me is just something I have never had before. I always end up smiling when I speak to her and see her.”

The ADTRAC project, which is part-funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, aims to provide one-to-one bespoke support from ADTRAC personal mentors or NHS mental health practitioners as well as tailored training and courses designed to meet the specific needs and improve the wellbeing of young people aged 16-24 engaged in the project.

Get in touch with the ADTRAC team for Wrexham and Flintshire at ADTRAC@wrexham.gov.uk or see https://www.gllm.ac.uk/adtrac for further details about the project.
