If you are not familiar with either the Llangollen international or the National Eisteddfods then read on!
After reading our handy guide you should be able to know the difference – as well as be excited for their arrival later in the year!
The first thing to know is that that both Eisteddfod’s bring people together through a colourful and musical celebrations of cultures.
What is the National Eisteddfod?
The National Eisteddfod is the largest cultural festival in Europe and is held annually in August.
National Eisteddfod origins date back to around 1176 where the first Eisteddfod was held in Aberteifi; however, the first ‘modern day’ Eisteddfod was established in 1861, and took place in Aberdare.
The National Eisteddfod takes place in different locations across the country each year, rotating from North to South Wales. This year the National Eisteddfod is returning to Wrexham from the 2nd-9th August and it was last in Wrecsam back in 2011.
The Eisteddfod is funded from various sources, but one of the most important revenue streams is through local fundraising groups in the host area! It is a great way to engage, or re-engage with your local community.
You can find out more about community groups and getting involved here.
It is a festival where people can compete in a wide range of different competitions, visit the different stalls that are on the maes and visit ‘Maes B’ a festival within a festival where you can watch many live bands and solo artists. Headlining at Maes B this year are Bwncath, Gwilym, Fleur De Lys and Adwaith.
Is it for Cymraeg speakers only?
Some people believe the Eisteddfod is for Cymraeg speakers only; however, this is not the case. It is a National festival where people can learn Cymraeg and celebrate our language and culture.
There are plenty of opportunities to use Cymraeg on the maes, be it tipyn bach (a little) or a lot!
There’s even a specific area for learners of Cymraeg ‘Maes D’
What Is the Llangollen Eisteddfod?
The International Musical Eisteddfod was founded in 1947 and it takes places every year in the July in Llangollen.
It began with a vision that the ancient Welsh eisteddfod tradition could provide a means of healing the wounds of the Second World War, and help to promote lasting peace.
It is a festival to celebrate and experience international dance, music and culture from across the world.
The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is funded through a combination of donations, sponsorships and investments; however, just like the National Eisteddfod one of the most important revenue streams is through local fundraising groups in the community! The Llangollen Eisteddfod seeks to attract individual and corporate sponsors.
The organization invite well known musicians to perform in the June before the Eisteddfod starts. This year they have James, Texas, Rag’n’Bone Man, UB 40, The Script, Olly Murs and The Human League. They also hold a not to be missed colourful parade of nations through the town of where everyone competing from across the world can take part. This is being held on the 3rd July 2025.
