More than 80 girls from across eight different county borough secondary school took part in a Girls Football Tournament at Colliers Park, Wrexham.

The event, organised by the Active Wrexham Active Young People Team and Wrexham Football Club’s Racecourse Community Foundation (RCF), and followed a 10-week block of training sessions delivered by the RCF.

Girls from Clywedog, Darland, Grango, Morgan Llwyd, Penley, Ruabon, Rhosnesni and St Joseph’s took part in the tournament.

Morgan Llwyd took the top spot, beating Darland in the final with Penley finishing in third place.

The winners were invited to Wrexham FC’s home game against Halifax Town.

Training sessions offered by RCF will continue to run in the schools throughout the academic year, with further fixtures in place following on from the success of the tournament.

Robert Darlington, Active Young People Officer from Active Wrexham, said: “One of Sport Wales’ main aims in terms of tackling inequality is to encourage and empower more women and girls to get active and stay active, so our team works hard to try to provide more opportunities for more girls across Wrexham get into sport and physical activity. Part of making that happen is ensuring the sporting talents of girls are recognised, encouraged and fostered.

“We have a really good link with the RCF so we’re very grateful to them for the work they put in to make this a reality and in helping girls across secondary schools get the extra-curricular activity they need.”
