Ysgol Rhiwabon has recently benefitted from an upgrade to the lighting of its dual-use sport centre, with LED lighting being installed at the facility over the half term period.

The new LED lighting comes with sensor technology, and the school will see a vast improvement to both energy efficiency and performance.

The sport centre’s entrance and stairs have also been upgraded, with new flooring being fitted to these areas.

Freedom Leisure Centre Manager David Watkin, said: “The investment at Ruabon has seen lighting levels in the hall improve dramatically. With an option to adjust to 1200lux this replicates daylight conditions. This is above the recommended lighting levels for regional cricket development and will ensure Ruabon remains a regional Hub for all cricket coaching within North Wales.”

Almost £120,000 investment

The improvement came as part of a project that is supported by Freedom Leisure and Wrexham Council, which will see lighting replacements in five of our dual-use centres.

Almost £120,000 has been invested into the project, with the other school sport centres benefitting from the project being at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Ysgol Clywedog, Rhosnesni High School and Darland High School.

Mrs Melanie Ferron-Evans, Headteacher at Ysgol Rhiwabon, said: ”We’re delighted with the investment made by WCBC and Freedom Leisure in our sports centre lighting improvements. The benefits are not only the increased light coverage and quality, but also the reduction in our carbon footprint as a school. Our Sports Department is one of the strongest and really does appreciate the excellent facilities that they have for the use of our students.”

Emma Williams, Energy Efficiency Officer for Wrexham Council, said: “It’s great news that the new LED lights have now been installed at Ysgol Rhiwabon; the school and users of the facility have already noticed a great improvement. We hope the substantial investment to improve the dual-use sport centres will continue to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings, and support our work in delivering Decarbonisation.”
