Each year, Wrexham Council elects a councillor to take up the role of Mayor and represent the city over the twelve-month period.
The role is very varied and gives a unique insight to the multitude of wonderful organisations that operate and events that take place in our community.
Among the community based engagements, the Mayor also represents Wrexham at civic events such as Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day as well as chairing council meetings to name a small few.
At the start of their term of office, each Mayor selects a charity or charities to raise money for throughout their Mayoral year via a variety of fundraising endeavours.
Councillor Jeremy Kent has recently commenced his Mayoral year for 2026/27. He is a familiar face both within his council work and his local ward of Gresford. Having been a resident of Wrexham for almost twenty years, he takes immense pride in making a positive difference for the people of Wrexham.
Today, we grab a few moments of our newly appointed Mayor’s time to ask him a few questions about his year ahead.
Councillor Kent, how does it feel to be appointed the Mayor of Wrexham?
It is an enormous honour and privilege to be appointed Mayor of Wrexham. Having lived in Wrexham for almost twenty years, this place means a great deal to me. To be entrusted with representing our community is something I am incredibly proud of. I am very much looking forward to meeting residents, supporting local organisations, and celebrating everything that makes Wrexham such a special place.
Can you tell us a little bit about your journey as a local councillor leading up to this new role?
My journey as a councillor started from my life serving my local community and trying to make a positive difference wherever possible. Representing the residents of Gresford has given me the opportunity to work closely with individuals, community groups, and fellow councillors on a wide range of issues that matter to local people. Throughout my time on the council, I have always tried to be approachable, hardworking, and community-focused, and I hope to bring those same values to the role of Mayor.
How did you find your term in office as Deputy Mayor? Did it put you in good stead for the year ahead?
Serving as Deputy Mayor was a fantastic experience and certainly helped prepare me for the responsibilities of the role ahead. It gave me a valuable insight into the wide variety of engagements, events, and ceremonial duties that the Mayor undertakes throughout the year. More importantly, it allowed me to see first-hand the incredible work being carried out by organisations, volunteers, and residents across Wrexham. I learned a great deal during that time and I believe it has given me a strong foundation for my Mayoral year.
Which charities have you chosen as your “Mayor’s Charities” for your term in office? Can you tell us what they mean to you?
During my Mayoral year, I have chosen ANDYSMANCLUB and WeMindTheGap as my Mayor’s Charities.
Both organisations carry out truly life-changing work within our communities. Andy’s Man Club provides vital support for men’s mental health, helping to break down stigma and reminding people that it’s okay to talk. We Mind the Gap creates opportunities for young people and supports individuals who may otherwise feel overlooked or left behind.
These charities represent compassion, inclusion, and hope — values that are incredibly important to me personally. Throughout the year, I hope not only to raise valuable funds for them, but also to shine a light on the incredible difference they make to so many lives across Wrexham and beyond.
Alongside my chosen Mayor’s Charities, I will also be supporting and working with a number of other charities and community organisations throughout the year. Wrexham is fortunate to have so many dedicated groups and volunteers making a positive difference every single day, and I look forward to championing their work wherever I can.
What are you hoping to achieve during your Mayoral year?
Above all, I want to use my Mayoral year to champion the people, organisations, and communities that make Wrexham such a vibrant and welcoming place. I hope to support local charities and voluntary groups, encourage community spirit, and highlight the positive work happening across the county borough every day. I also want to be a Mayor who is accessible and engaged with residents from all walks of life.
Alongside the civic and ceremonial side of the role, I would also like to focus on a number of initiatives that I feel passionate about. One of these is promoting the importance of first aid awareness and encouraging more people, particularly young people, to gain potentially life-saving skills and confidence.
I am also very excited about the idea of developing a youth arts festival that celebrates the creativity and talent of young people across Wrexham. We have so many gifted young performers, artists, musicians, and creators in our communities, and I would love to provide opportunities for them to showcase their abilities and be recognised.
Is there a particular duty or engagement that you’re most looking forward to being a part of?
One of the things I am most looking forward to is attending community events and meeting the people who dedicate so much of their time to improving the lives of others. I am also honoured to take part in important civic occasions such as Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, which provide an opportunity for us all to reflect, remember, and come together as a community.
Remembrance has always held a deep personal significance for me. Through my involvement in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, I have attended Remembrance events every year, and it is something that has shaped my understanding of service, sacrifice, and community.
To now have the opportunity to lead Remembrance on behalf of Wrexham is a true honour, and one I will carry out with the utmost respect and pride.
Is there a message you’d like to give to the residents of Wrexham?
I would like to thank the residents of Wrexham for the warm support I have already received. Wrexham is a city with a strong sense of community, pride, and resilience, and it is a privilege to serve as your Mayor. Over the coming year, I look forward to meeting as many people as possible and working to represent our city with pride, dignity, and enthusiasm.
With big year ahead of him, be sure to follow us to keep you up to date with all the Mayoral engagements Councillor Kent embarks on.
