Generations of Welsh Guardsmen, and their families, will come together on June 27, 2026 to remember fellow and attached personnel who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Falklands war and Operation Herrick in Afghanistan.
A church service will take place on the day at 11am in St Giles Church and will be followed by a parade through the city centre to the Falklands and Afghanistan memorials at Bodhyfryd, where a wreath laying ceremony will take place.
During the event, a new memorial dedicated to those Welsh Guardsmen and attached personnel who lost their lives during Operation Herrick 10 and 16 in Afghanistan will be unveiled.
The memorial has been crafted from a single piece of Welsh slate, sourced from Blaenau Ffestiniog. It bears the names of 12 members of the Welsh Guards battlegroup during those two tours. It will stand as a permanent place of remembrance, reflection and respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Cllr Beverley Parry Jones, armed forces champion, said: “The decision to make Wrexham the spiritual home of the Welsh Guards, and to place this memorial here, reflects the city’s strong connection to remembrance within the Welsh Guards family, and its established links through the annual Falklands Memorial Day. This is a long-standing connection, and includes their receiving the Freedom of the Borough back in 2014.
“I encourage everyone to line the streets of the city centre to show how important these events are to the people of Wrexham on this joint occasion of remembrance, bringing together different generations of serving soldiers, veterans, families and friends.”
