The days are getting longer, the daffodils are blooming, and it’s the perfect time for a fresh start! This spring, we’re backing the Be Mighty. Recycle campaign.

Food waste

Even though most of us know food never belongs in the rubbish, a quarter of the average rubbish bin is still made up of food waste. And shockingly, 80% of this food could have been eaten, costing the average 4-person household £89 a month. That’s money (and potential meals!) straight in the bin.

Spring is a time for fresh starts, so why not give your food habits a refresh too? By making the most of the food you buy, and recycling what you can’t eat, you’ll save time and cut waste.

Make your dishes MIGHTY! Cut waste and get more taste

Use those last pieces of veg, leftover meat, or lonely spuds to boost easy dishes when you’re up against it and need a quick meal for yourself, your housemates, or your family. Cut waste, get more taste, and whip up tasty meals in minutes. Here’s some inspo:

  • One-pot pasta – Got a handful of mushrooms, some broccoli, or leftover meat? Toss them in your pasta for a hearty, waste-free meal.
  • Transform a classic omelette – Potatoes, tomatoes, leftover meat – it all goes! Whip up a hearty omelette with whatever’s left in the fridge.
  • Yoghurt sundae – Rescue ripe fruit, crumble in cake or nuts, and drizzle with honey or jam for a mighty sweet treat!

What you can’t eat, RECYCLE!

As you’re whipping up your mighty dishes, remember to recycle the bits you can’t eat – like banana skins, inedible stalks and peelings, bones and eggshells.

In Wrexham we try to make it easy for everyone to recycle their food waste through our weekly recycling service, and we offer free food caddies and liners to all our residents. Unfortunately the reality is that there’s still lots of food going into our resident’s general waste, which could’ve been recycled.

Some food waste is unavoidable so please make sure all these different items like peelings and food bones get recycled. You can find out the things that can be recycled on our website.

Take the pledge to rescue your food from the rubbish and WIN

Whether you’re at home, or out and about, it’s time to get smart with food waste.

Pledge to rescue your food from the rubbish. You’ll save time, save money – plus you could win a delicious Welsh prize!
