Wrexham Council and local residents are expressing deep concern following a disturbing incident of vandalism in Plas Madoc on April 14, 2025, where several trees have been deliberately damaged – some felled completely, others left with irreversible harm.
The senseless destruction was discovered over the weekend in a popular green space within the community. Initial assessments confirm that a number of mature trees were cut down, while others have been subjected to such severe damage that they are unlikely to recover.
Councillor Terry Evans, lead member for environmental services, said: “This is not just about the loss of trees, it’s a loss to the environment, to local wildlife, and to the wellbeing of the community who cherish and use these green spaces.”
Trees provide vital benefits – improving air quality, offering shade and shelter, supporting biodiversity, and contributing to the beauty and character of the area. Their loss will be felt by all who live in and visit Plas Madoc.
Councillor Paul Blackwell, local member for Acrefair North, adds: ‘The vandalism of these trees that provide the oxygen and improve our visual environment is a disgrace. It’s difficult enough trying to get funds to improve our environment without this happening and I hope the perpetrators are caught.’
The incident has been reported to North Wales Police, and an investigation is now underway. The council is appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area to come forward with information.
“We are committed to protecting our local environment,” the spokesperson added. “We will explore all options for replanting and restoration, but this damage will take years – if not decades – to undo.”
Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any further suspicious activity to the authorities. Anyone with information can contact North Wales Police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
