The Welsh Government is being asked to support proposals for new direct rail services between Wrexham and London Euston.

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment with responsibility for strategic transport, has written to the Deputy Minister for Transport to highlight the importance of the proposed Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway services.

The proposals would see up to five trains a day running from Wrexham to London Euston via Shrewsbury, helping to improve direct rail links between North Wales, the Midlands and London.

Earlier this year, local MP’s and partners from local authorities travelled to 10 Downing Street to present a petition calling for the new direct rail services. There has been continued political support for the proposals as WSMR’s (Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway) application progresses.

The proposed services are expected to support wider economic growth in Wrexham and could also create up to fifty new jobs.

Councillor David A Bithell said, “Improving rail connectivity between Wrexham and London is incredibly important for our city and the wider region.”

“These proposed services would provide better direct links to the capital, support local businesses, strengthen economic growth and create new jobs.”

“I am asking the Welsh Government to support WSMR and endorse these proposals as the application progresses. This is a real opportunity to improve transport links for Wrexham and North Wales, and I hope the Welsh Government will give it its full support.”

The Office of Rail and Road is expected to make a decision on the application in September.
