Welsh Language Signs
As part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve had to create a lot of new internal and external signage. Please remember that under the Welsh standards all new signage must be bilingual with the Welsh text above or to the left of the English text. The final design proof must also be approved by the Welsh Language Coordinator before being produced.
This document contains a step by step guide for producing accurate bilingual signage including a number of printable notices. https://bit.ly/2OWsbQi
Welsh Language Commissioner – Back to business
The Welsh language commissioner, Aled Roberts, wrote to us in April committing to delay the handling of complaints and investigations if we wished him to do so. Despite this, we continued to work with the commissioner on any new complaints and ongoing investigations. We have now received notification that he will be resuming normal regulatory practices on August 1, albeit in a slightly different way. Stephen Jones – Welsh Language Coordinator would like to thank all members of staff for their cooperation and quick responses to enquiries over the last few months.
Answerphone / Voicemail Messages
Following an investigation by the Welsh language commissioner we were required to undertake a full review of all recorded messages / voicemails to ensure that they comply with the Welsh standards. The review identified that a few recordings were non-compliant and these have since been amended. It also flagged that individual members of staff record their own answerphone messages unaware that this could lead to a complaint should a Welsh speaker come through via the automated switchboard.
To avoid any future complaints, anyone with an answerphone/ voicemail message must review if this is still required, and if so, you will need to arrange for a Welsh speaker in your service to record a bilingual version for you.
Do you speak Welsh?
