What can’t I recycle? What can I recycle at kerbside?Don’t forget about food! And if it can’t be recycled at kerbside…Bin reminders

Supermarkets already have their Christmas aisles set-up, and they’re full to the brim with various wrapping papers, decorations and Christmas cards.

You might have already started stocking up on some of these things…

But when you’re doing so, it’s well worth considering which of these can be recycled.

In Wrexham, we’re doing a great job with our recycling – and at Christmas it’s important to keep our momentum going…particularly when you consider the amounts of materials we’ll be dealing with.

Cllr David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“The people of Wrexham continue to do a fantastic job with their recycling. The Christmas period will mean people have even more things they can recycle than usual, so it’s important to take the time to thank people for their efforts and remind them of the great job they’re doing.”

Fact: With all the card packaging we use in Wales over Christmas, we could make a cardboard motorway from Wales to Lapland!

Here’s a bit of information to help you become a recycling winner this Christmas.

What can’t I recycle?

Foil wrapping paper is non-recyclable. It may look pretty, but if you want to be a recycling winner, it’s best to steer clear.

Tags containing glitter can’t be recycled…

Also, decorative bows and ribbons are non-recyclable. Maybe store them away for next year?

Tip: Please remove masking tape and staples from cardboard boxes before recycling them.

What can I recycle at kerbside?

Large sweet tins can be recycled alongside your cans and plastics in your wheelie box/recycling boxes.

You can also recycle wrapping paper (not foil), envelopes and Christmas cards with your other paper in the usual way. Paper and card gift bags can be recycled here too – just remember to remove any non-recyclable handles.

Foil trays from your tasty mince pies can be recycled with your cans and plastic bottles. Just make sure there’s no leftover food attached.

Fact: Did you know that if your recycling boxes are full, you can leave extra recycling out for collection, in carrier bags or spare boxes? Just make sure you separate the different materials, as you would normally, and place them next to your usual recycling boxes on the kerbside.

Don’t forget about food!

Christmas also means lots of turkey bones and leftovers that can be recycled in your food caddy.

For a reminder of what foods are recyclable, please take a look at our blog from last month.

With our roll-out of free caddy liners underway, it’s a great time to start thinking about recycling food, if you don’t already do-so.

And don’t forget – if you’re running low on caddy liners, just tie an empty one to your caddy handle on your collection day and we’ll leave you a new roll…

Or alternatively you can get them from our recycling centres…just speak to an attendant and ask them for another roll.

And if it can’t be recycled at kerbside…

You can take many other items to one of our recycling centres to be recycled or re-used.

Old or unwanted Christmas decorations can be recycled through the Nightingale House Hospice re-use shop at Bryn Lane household recycling centre…

Also, look out for the designated areas at both Plas Madoc and Brymbo household recycling centres, where you can leave items for the re-use shop.

And, you can take real Christmas trees to be recycled at our recycling centres, if they won’t fit in your green bin.

If you want, you can bring your excess wrapping paper to our recycling centres too. Just make sure you separate your paper from your foil wrap before arriving at the centre.

Bin reminders

Remember, you can even subscribe to a bin collection day reminder which you receive via e-mail every week the day before your collection day.

This is especially helpful to residents over the Christmas season when collection days can change!
