At today’s Executive Board meeting members agreed to issue a Statutory Notice regarding increasing the number of pupils to attend Ysgol Bro Alun in Gwersyllt.

The plans are to create an extension to the current building to accommodate a further 105 pupils (15 pupils per year group). The first year of increase would be September 2019 for Nursery (additional 15 places) and Reception (additional 15 places) the increase in numbers would be restricted to those year groups only.

The annual admission number will increase by 15 places (from 30 to 45) for nursery and reception places from 2019 onwards and these classes will feed through the school until the maximum capacity of 315 (plus 45 nursery places) has been reached.

If all goes to plan then works should start on-site in the summer.

Football was also high on the agenda and members agreed to take forward plans for pilot football hubs in partnership with the Football Association of Wales (Trust) and North East Wales Football Association.

The plans include

• The improvement of the Mold Road gateway leading into town, including the train station and the Racecourse;
• A new football development centre at Colliers Park;
• Plans – recently discussed by Welsh Assembly – to develop a National Football Museum in Wrexham;
• Work by the Council and Wrexham AFC to secure a permanent location for a training ground

The plans are backed by £50,000 from the Welsh Government – the pilot project would run for a year, and then be assessed to see how successful the hub model was.

The main aim of the partnership would be to help clubs become more self-sufficient, improve community facilities and give young people and adults the opportunity and facilities they need to improve their health.

At the same meeting members voted to recommend to Council the 2019/20 budget with a net expenditure of £236,853k which will result in an increase in council tax at band D of 5.5% – £1,153.13. Council will meet on 20 February to set the final budget.

The future of the Erlas building was also discussed and members agreed to go ahead with an ecological study on the site and to go ahead with plans to demolish the house and cottages to enable the future use of the site to be agreed.

The closing date for 2019 nursery school applications is February 22
