Making sure we have the right schools in the right places across Wrexham is no mean feat and over the past few years a lot has been done to improve our schools, but there is still more to do – which is where planned future projects come in.

This second round of proposed improvements is called Band B and as part of the planned projects, the council will continue to address geographical pinch points within the county borough where there is growing demand for school places, including those in Welsh-language and faith-based education.

These projects will also reduce running costs, improve ICT facilities, provide future-proof designs and provide, were there is demand, additional community use. There are five main projects included, which are:

  1. Bringing Borras Infants and Juniors onto one site.
  2. Borras Infants site will become a 210-place primary and 30-place nursery Welsh-medium school following refurbishment and minor alterations.
  3. There will be a full review of secondary provision throughout Wrexham during the 2017 academic year to address surplus places in English medium schools and increased demand for Welsh medium schools. It is anticipated that the review will highlight the need to make some substantial changes to several locations across the county so a £10 million price tag has been identified for this.
  4. Ysgol yr Hafod infants and juniors will come under one roof, freeing up one school building.
  5. Ysgol ID Hooson requires an extension to replace current temporary classrooms.

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for People – Education, said: ‘I am delighted to be able to bring this report to Executive Board as it represents some huge improvements to education provision in the county borough. We delivered some fantastic projects as part of Band A, including four extra improvements for the same budget, so we are looking forward to taking Band B forwards.’
