Our successful 2023/24 trochwyr group are now being released in phases into mainstream education after becoming fully bi-lingual in just over 12 months!

The Welsh Immersion provision (Trochi) supports children from English medium primary settings to transfer to a Welsh medium secondary setting by providing an intensive transition course during the summer term of year 6 until the end of year 8.  However the majority of pupils are able to achieve full fluency in around a year!

Nyla Pearson, a Year 7 student said: “I can’t believe what we have managed to achieve in a year.” I never thought it possible. “I have enjoyed this past year so much, making new friends, all the fun activities and games and am proud and sad that our time here is coming to an end.”

The 2023-24 group celebrated their success with a recent trip to Glan Llyn  as well as having a farewell party.

Dylan Pugh, a Year 7 student said: “The Glan Llyn experience was fantastic because the staff we’re kind and encouraged us with our Welsh. “The activities were fun and we had the opportunity to mix with other Welsh Immersion students from other schools.”

The trochi team now look set to welcome a new influx of students who have an exciting few weeks ahead in their Welsh language journey. The students can look forward to a visit to Llaethdy Mynydd Mostyn Dairy farm, where they will learn about farm life in Welsh, football sessions (including a Q&A with Wrexham player Lili Jones), a gig and Q&A with singer Megan Lee, as well as a podcasting session, animation and yard games.

Hannah Thomas, parent to a Year 7 and Year 6 student said: “I’m so glad my children decided to take part in the Welsh immersion course at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, my daughter started last year and my son has started this year. “The staff are amazing and the children are really happy in the class. “They’re not afraid to raise any worries or niggles they might have and the teachers always make sure things are dealt with and the children (and myself) are supported, the communication from the staff is excellent.

“Each class seems to have bonded really well and my children have already made some lovely friends.

“The rate my daughter has learnt to speak Welsh is very impressive and even though my son hasn’t been on the immersion course long, him and his sister are already having conversations at home in Welsh. “The course has built my daughter’s confidence so much and she really enjoys the lessons in the immersion group.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for the Environment and Welsh Language Champion at Wrexham Council said: “Being or becoming a Welsh speaker is not only enriching, but it also opens doors and offers opportunities. “There is still an opportunity for students to join the trochi scheme for this year, I encourage anyone with an interest what they have just read to contact trochi@wrexham.gov.uk for more information.”
