With its head office in Wrexham, Marlin Industries Ltd has operated as a private limited company for 32 years. Growing from a start-up in 1991, the company now has 175 people across six UK sites with annual revenues of some £17M.

One of the main functions of the business is to provide reels and drums on which cable or rope is wound. Reels and drums are used to transport cable or rope from factory through to installation site.

Made from wood, plywood or recycled cable waste, many of the reels and drums can be used more than once.

Marlin Industries is a Zero to Landfill business focused on sustainability

Lead member for Economy and Regeneration, Cllr Nigel Williams, recently visited their premises and saw for himself how their zero tolerance to landfill is helping to protect the environment.

They use their own fleet of vehicles and provide a UK wide service, collecting reels and drums from sites where cable has been installed. These are then refurbished, repairing or replacing damaged components to allow reuse.

Reusing packaging in such a way reduces costs, but importantly reduces waste and means that much lower volumes of new reels and drums are required.

This is central to the ethos of Marlin and makes for a unique and complete offering to the energy and telecommunications industries.

To complement the new and refurbished packaging solutions, a full in-house recycling capability means that wood and plastic can be processed into other products; no material goes to landfill, it is all recycled.

Reuse of packaging used across the cable industry is a good example of the circular economy in operation. The company is keen to build on this by further extending its capabilities and is now targeting a date of 2030 to become a carbon net zero organisation.

Cllr Williams, said, “Their operation is extremely impressive and their attention to the environment is second to none.

“I would like to thank John and Mel for taking the time to show me around their premises and bringing me up to date with all they plan for the future.”

John Droog, Chief Executive at Marlin Industries, said, “As market leaders in the low carbon manufacturing revolution within the cable industry It was a pleasure to take Nigel around.

“We showed him that as a circular economy business, we provide solutions to our customers which reduces costs and improves environmental performance.”
