Update 2pm

Tomorrow’s green bin collections (Wednesday) have been suspended due to the difficult conditions. Please present your recycling as normal and we will make every effort to collect. We’ll keep you updated as things improve.

You might still receive your scheduled weekly email asking you to put your green bin out tomorrow, but please ignore this – green bin collections will definitely be suspended tomorrow due to the knock-on effect of this week’s weather.

Update 1.35pm

Snow update 19.11.24

Here’s one of our ploughing and gritting teams out and about.

Thank you for your patience today. Our teams have been working incredibly hard overnight and this morning – gritting and ploughing in the snow – and we really appreciate your support.

We look after 1,148.5km of roads across the county borough, and our crews have given it everything to keep the road network as clear as possible on primary routes, with the more rural routes being attended to by agriculture and ploughing contractors (thank you!).

Our teams have also cleared over 20 fallen trees as well as assisting with cars and lorries that had got stuck overnight.

Thank you again for your help and support. Take care and stay safe in the snow.

Update 12.30

Statement from Cllr Terry Evans (Lead Member for Environment)…

“Our gritting crews were out yesterday evening from 6pm, and continued to work throughout the night to ensure that the priority routes on our road network were kept as clear as possible. We are still working hard today to ensure these routes are kept clear as the snow has continued to fall. We are also being assisted in rural areas by agricultural and ploughing contractors.

“Throughout the night and this morning, the team have received a number of calls about fallen trees and other damage – which they will assess and prioritise in order of safety. During the night we cleared over 20 fallen trees, and were on hand to assist with a number of cars and lorries that had got stuck overnight.

“We will continue to respond to concerns as they arise and deploy our gritting crews as required later today. The forecast looks as though we have seen the last of the snow for today, however we’ll continue to monitor this closely, along with other factors like road surface temperature, and respond accordingly.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to our own teams and the contractors who work tirelessly in these conditions to ensure that we can keep roads clear, and ultimately keep residents safe; while most of us are at home keeping safe and warm. Our winter maintenance service is a significant operation which is on standby for 6-months of the year, ready to respond at a moments’ notice.

“As we have had crews working round the clock, we have made the decision to cancel the garden waste collections today, and will focus on recycling and general waste with the resources we have available.

“I would remind residents to remain cautious whilst travelling on the roads. Make sure you leave plenty of time for your journey, plan your route appropriately and check the weather conditions before you set off.”

Update 10.45am

All Household Recycling Centres are open as normal. Roads and walkways have been gritted and cleared of snow.

Update 8.50am

Please present your recycling as normal and we will make every effort to collect.

Update 8.30am

Lots of snow on the ground…

Schools have updated parents about closures, but you can check if you child’s school is open on the council website.

Please take care and continue to be careful when out and about.

Thank you for your patience. Our teams have been working incredibly hard over the past 24 hours – gritting and ploughing in the snow – and we really appreciate your support.
