This Carers Rights Day, Wrexham Council are pleased to officially announce that we have signed the Young Carers Covenant, promising to take practical and meaningful action for young carers.

The Young Carers Covenant is a series of outcomes that young people from across the UK have highlighted as being key to improving their lives. By signing the covenant the council is demonstrating commitment to make these outcomes a reality and ensure young carers and young adult carers have the same life opportunities as their peers.

The covenant was signed by Our Executive Board in July and actions are being set by a Young Carers Covenant group to ensure meaningful steps are taken to meet the outcomes set out in the covenant.

Cllr Rob Walsh, Lead Member for Children’s Services said: “I’m pleased that Wrexham Council has shown its commitment to supporting our young carers. It’s really important to recognise and support the invaluable contributions young carers make to their families and communities. Signing the covenant reflects the council’s dedication to ensuring young carers have access to the resources and support they need to thrive personally and academically in Wrexham.”

Sally Duckers, Team Leader for Credu said: “WCD Young Carers are really pleased that Wrexham Council has formally committed to the Young Carers Covenant and hopes it might inspire others to pledge their support. The Covenant commits to recognising and listening to young carers whilst also protecting them from taking on inappropriate, excessive or negatively impactful caring roles. ’’
