  • New houses will be first council homes to be built in nearly 30 years

New houses will be first council homes to be built in nearly 30 years

Work has started on a housing development which will see the construction of the first council homes to be built in Wrexham since 1991.

We’re working alongside developers Liberty to build new council homes at the site of the former Nant Silyn residential care home on Pont Wen, Caia Park.

There will be 14 new properties including eight apartments, four two bedroom houses, one older person’s one-bed bungalow and one fully adapted two-bed bungalow.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

Work started on the site earlier in the winter, and is due to be complete in 2020.

    “Absolutely delighted”

Cllr David Griffiths, Lead Member for Housing at Wrexham Council, said the authority was pleased to be building its first social housing development in nearly 30 years.

Cllr Griffiths said: “We’re absolutely delighted that we’re bringing new social properties in Wrexham.

“This will be the first council developments to be built since 1991, and we’re very pleased that we’re able to bring new housing to this site.

“The development will transform the site of the former Nant Silyn, which was closed four years ago, into a new community and we’re glad that we’re working alongside Liberty on this new development.

“And the provision of new council properties will complement our ongoing work under the Welsh Housing Quality Standards (WHQS), which has seen hundreds of council properties modernised and brought up to 21st century standards.”

The Nant Silyn scheme forms the first of a number of social housing developments earmarked for Wrexham, with a further development at Plas Madoc awaiting planning approval.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said: “This is an ambitious project for Wrexham Council and will supply lifetime homes for our tenants

“I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to come to a point where we’re constructing new council homes, and know that these new properties will go a long way to fulfilling the housing needs of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

“Look forward to delivering these much-needed homes”

Ray Jones, Group Managing Director of Liberty, said the project would provide much-needed social housing to the town.

“The regeneration of disused brownfield sites will create attractive and modern living spaces in an area brimming with natural beauty.

“We are naturally delighted to be working with Wrexham County Borough Council on this exciting project and very much look forward to delivering these much-needed homes.”

The Virtual Dementia Tour was invented 20 years ago and can give people with a healthy brain an experience of what dementia might be like. • Our top 5 recycling blogs of 2019

Our top 5 recycling blogs of 2019

We recently gave you our top 10 blog picks for 2019, but it’s fair to say that over the past 12 months we’ve published a number of important recycling articles too.

Therefore, we’ve decided to revisit five of our most popular recycling blogs as well. Did you miss any of these the first time round? Even if you didn’t, there’s plenty of stuff in them that’s worth taking a second look at.

Hmm, so where do we start? How about something that many of us have been getting to grips with in 2019…recycling food waste 🙂

    1. What can I recycle as food waste?

Meat bones, eggshells, wooden cutlery and tea bags are just some of the things that can be recycled in your food caddy. Want to find out what else you can recycle? Then take a look at this…

    2. Which plastics can I recycle in Wrexham?

If you get confused by plastic, you’re probably not alone. But the good news is that in Wrexham, lots of plastic containers are recyclable in your green box/middle wheelie box. Which ones? Find out here…

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

    3. Here’s how to correctly recycle cardboard boxes

Most of us are recycling our cardboard, but there’s a number of us who are not getting it quite right. We need to make some tweaks and you can find out how to do this here…

Recycling is about more than just your empty cans, bottles and tins. The reuse shop recycles sporting equipment, hoovers, prams, furniture, bikes, garden furniture, televisions and much more! Watch our video and see for yourself…

    5. Reminder – how to get free caddy liners

We’ve been giving out free caddy liners for many, many months but it seems there’s still a number of people in Wrexham that don’t know about this. If you’re unsure how to get them, don’t panic, all the info is in this blog…

We hope you enjoyed revisiting these recycling blogs.

WATCH: Direct Payments – Your care, your choice!

If you or someone you care for gets help from social services, you can apply for direct payments. These let you chose and buy the services you need yourself, instead of getting them from us.

    How do Direct Payments work?

If you are assessed by social services as needing care and support, instead of us providing you with the service, you can be given the money to purchase your own services.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

How can Direct Payments help me?

They can help you in a number of ways, which will put you in full control of how your care and support is delivered to you.

The payments will also enable you to be more independent, you can recruit your own personal assistant rather than having whoever is sent to you. You could also arrange for your care to be delivered at different times to suit what you want to do.

You could even choose to use your direct payment to attend different community based activities.

Direct Payments can be used for personal care support in your home or so you can get to activities or use facilities in the local community. You can have all or part of your assessed needs met using Direct Payments.

The payments must be managed safely and responsibly and they must achieve the outcomes set out in your care and support plan, which is agreed with your social worker.

    Sound a bit complicated?

Don’t worry! There’s loads of help and advice on hand to walk you through every step of the process and make it as easy as possible for you.

    Want to find out more?

If you are interested and already get services from us, just arrange a chat with your social worker who will be able to advise you on the best options and how to apply.

If you don’t receive a service you can contact social services and ask for an assessment of your needs or if you would simply like to find out more about how Direct Payments could work for you, get in touch with us:
