  • TV Licensing Scam Alert

    TV Licensing Scam Alert

We’ve had reports that residents are receiving emails saying their Direct Debit for their TV Licence has been declined and to get in touch.

There’s only a few errors in it such as missing spaces but overall it looks good and very official and could fool a lot of people so beware!

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

The one we have seen looks like this:

It gives you the option to “Update TV Licensing Now”

Don’t click! It takes you to a very credible site but it’s a scam – it’s after your money or personal details or both!

It also offers you the opportunity to pay online now and/or to change your personal details:

Again don’t click either. It’s just another way to try and get your money and/or personal details.

If you do receive this or any similar email please take advice from the real TV Licensing people at https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ288 or simply delete it but don’t forget to tell family and friends about the scam.

Already entered your banking details on a fake site or in response to a phone call? Please talk to your bank immediately.

There’s also a new service that you may find useful that we publicised earlier this month:

  • Be aware and take care at your local recycling centre

Be aware and take care at your local recycling centre

Along with FCC Environment, who manage our three recycling centres in Wrexham, we’re urging people to keep themselves, their children and their pets safe when visiting our sites.

There’s a number of potential hazards at a recycling centre, so we’re keen to give you some pointers to help make sure your next visit is a safe and pleasant experience.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    Ways to stay safe

    • Sort before you visit

Pre-sorting your items at home helps you get in and out of your recycling centre quickly and efficiently, lessening the chance of an accident.

    • Avoid slips, trips and falls…be aware of your footwear

Summer’s warmer weather often means flip-flops or sandals, but take care and make sure you’re in more suitable footwear when visiting your recycling centre. You don’t know what could’ve fallen on the ground where you’re walking, or who might drop something heavy, so sensible shoes are a must. Bare feet are definitely not allowed!

    • Follow the signs

Our staff are on hand to guide you to the appropriate disposal bays. The bays are clearly laid-out with signs to help you find them. Reverse parking will get you closer too, for easy access.

    • Keep kids and pets in vehicles

With cars, vans and trucks reversing and bulky items being moved around, it’s important that children (under 16 years old), as well as pets, stay in your vehicle for their own safety.

Children are often ‘keen to be green’ and help out at the recycling centre, but there’s other ways they can do this. For example, letting them sort through your materials at home is a way to keep them engaged with recycling, but also safe.

    • Drive considerately

Bryn Lane recycling centre has a 5mph speed limit, whilst our other two centres have a 4mph restriction. Please keep to the designated speed limit. With vehicles constantly moving in and out of the site we ask all visitors to be extra careful.

These simple steps can help you stay accident-free 🙂

    “Be aware”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We strongly urge people to follow this advice to make sure their future visits to our recycling centres are safe.

“It’s very important to realise that there are potential hazards at a recycling centre, with large objects being moved around frequently. Always be aware of what’s happening around you when you visit.”

    Our three recycling centres

If you need a reminder, you can find our recycling centres at…

    Bryn Lane, Wrexham Industrial Estate
    Wynnstay Bank, Plas Madoc
    The Lodge, Brymbo

Visit the council website to find a detailed list of materials that can be recycled at our centres.

All our recycling centres have a strict no smoking policy, and please refrain from using mobile phones whilst on the site.

Trade waste material isn’t accepted at our three recycling centres. Also, any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes won’t be accepted in the sites (e.g. large horse boxes, twin-axle trailers).

  • Reminder – how to get free caddy liners

Reminder – how to get free caddy liners

Some of you may have seen our social media posts from August 11 about getting free caddy liners…they’ve certainly had a lot of interaction.

We’ve been giving out the free liners for several months, but it seems there’s still a large number of people in Wrexham that don’t know this.

Therefore, we’re going to run through how you can get the free liners, but also give a reminder on how to order a new food caddy and get other replacement recycling bags/boxes you need.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

Tie an empty liner to my caddy

The easiest way to get free caddy liners from us is by tying an empty liner to your food caddy handle on your collection day, as shown in the picture.

All our recycling wagons carry the free caddy liners, so if you tie an empty liner to your caddy handle, you shouldn’t be missed out. We’ve reminded our recycling crews to make sure they carry them and we apologise to anyone that we’ve missed out in the past.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said, “By tying an empty liner to your caddy handle on your collection day, you’re letting our recycling crews know you’re running low on caddy liners. It’s really important to do this, as when they collect your food waste, they’ll see the empty liner and leave you a new roll.

“Whilst some people are taking advantage of this, it appears there’s still a number of us in Wrexham don’t know that we give out free caddy liners, but it’s part of our commitment to encouraging people to recycle food waste.”

    Our recycling centres

You can also pick up free caddy liners from any of our three recycling centres in Wrexham. Just speak to one of our attendants and ask them for another roll 🙂

    Ordering a new caddy

You can request a new food caddy on our website, where you can also order new recycling boxes. Alternatively, you can call the Contact Centre for these on 01978 298989.

If you need a new blue recycling bag, please ask your recycling crew on your next collection day. You can also collect one from a number of shops in Wrexham. Follow this link to see the full list of shops that have them.

As always, thanks for recycling and doing your bit for Wrexham 🙂

  • The early bin catches the wagon…don’t miss out on your collection

The early bin catches the wagon…don’t miss out on your collection

Did you know that our refuse and recycling crews start their work bright and early? It’s important you know this so you don’t miss out on your bin/recycling collection.

We need your bins and recycling to be presented on the kerbside by 7.30am on your collection day. If they’re not, you run the risk of missing out.

However please always be considerate and don’t present your bins/recycling in a way that could block prams or others from using the pavement.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

Even if you think your collection doesn’t usually come until later in the day, our routes will often vary and change over the course of the day, depending on the conditions we encounter.

So the only way to avoid putting your bins and recycling out too late is having them on the kerbside at 7.30am.

Not a morning person? In that case, please put them out ready the night before 😉

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said, “It’s important to all of us to have our bins and recycling collected, but not everyone knows that our crews begin their work very early in the morning.

“We need your bins and recycling to be ready for us by 7.30am on your collection day…if you put them out later, our crews could’ve already been to your street.”

  • Here’s how to correctly recycle cardboard boxes

Here’s how to correctly recycle cardboard boxes

The good news is cardboard can be recycled at the kerbside, and most of us in Wrexham are doing this 🙂

But it’s been brought to our attention by our recycling team that we’re not getting cardboard recycling quite right…we’re going to need to make some small tweaks to properly do our bit for Wrexham and be recycling superheroes.

So, here’s a quick rundown of how you can correctly recycle cardboard boxes in Wrexham.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    Remove everything extra

Yep, and we mean everything! So any tape, staples, bubble wrap, plastic film etc must be removed from your cardboard box before you recycle it.

Unfortunately, some of us aren’t doing this…we’re just taking our item from the box and not thinking about what other materials might be left behind.

In some cases at our recycling centres, we’ve found clothes, rugs, food, mixed plastics and even a Christmas tree still inside cardboard boxes!

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said, “Before recycling cardboard boxes, we’re asking people to consider what other materials might still be inside or attached to the cardboard.

“The only materials that you should be putting in your blue sack or top wheelie box are cardboards and papers, so any bubble wrap, film or tape should be removed beforehand. It’s a small thing people can do to help, which makes a massive difference.”

    Flatten the boxes

If you flatten your boxes before recycling them in your blue bag/top wheelie bin, it’ll leave much more room for the rest of your cardboard and papers…and as we know, Space Is Ace!

It also allows our collection rounds to run much more efficiently, so everyone benefits 🙂

But if your box/bag still gets full, leave extra cardboard/papers in a clear plastic bag (so our crew can see what’s inside), and we’ll recycle it and leave you the clear plastic bag to re-use again.

When doing this though, it’s important not to mix materials…for example, don’t fill a bag half with paper/cardboard and half with plastic. In this case, please still separate the materials like you would with your other recycling, so have one bag for the papers/cardboard and another bag for the plastic.

Don’t forget about our recycling centres

If you’re ever overloaded with cardboard, you can always take it to any of our three recycling centres in Wrexham.

Each recycling centre has a designated bin solely for brown corrugated cardboard, and there’s also other ones for mixed papers, in which you can place all your other papers, newspapers, magazines and card packaging. So it’s best to separate your corrugated cardboard from the rest beforehand.

If you need a reminder, you can find our recycling centres at:

    Bryn Lane, Wrexham Industrial Estate
    The Lodge, Brymbo
    Wynnstay Bank, Plas Madoc

As always, thanks for recycling and doing your bit for Wrexham 🙂
