The #30days30waysUK campaign has been running in parts of the UK and in other countries world-wide over recent years  and this year it is being supported by the North Wales Local Resilience Forum, a body made up of all organisations involved in dealing with emergencies) is lending its support. The Forum has a duty to warn and inform the public on how to stay safe during emergencies.

One message will be issued each day during September on a wide range of issues, including how to deal with flooding, staying safe in the home, awareness of cyber-bullying, fire safety, tips on driving in wintry weather and where to find the latest information about roadworks and traffic alerts.

Residents can find the messages on the social media accounts of all the partners involved in the campaign in North Wales by using the hashtag #30days30waysUK

  • Town centre improvements – what’s on the way?

Town centre improvements – what’s on the way?

We’ve already carried out a number of works to the town centre streetscape.

These include £250,000 worth of improvements to Wrexham Bus Station, including refurbished toilets; new litter bins; improved information screens; a planned disabled parking area and resurfacing of the highway immediately outside the station.

We’ve also carried out major Phase 1 works to Regent Street, Hope Street and Queens Square.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

And recently, we carried out improvements on Lord Street to help tackle anti-social behaviour, by removing bins, benches and trees.

But there’s even more improvements on the way.

The next round of updates and improvements to the town centre will take place near St Giles Church and the neighbouring streets, with a number of works planned.

Some of the upcoming works planned include:

    • New public litter bins throughout the town centre (plus improved pushcarts for our street cleaning team).
    • A proposed new storage area for bins used by residents and businesses on Yorke Street, plus creating a secure area for the collection of bins, and better management of the collection of bins on Temple Row.
    • Rolling out new heritage-style LED lighting on Queens Square, Lambpit Street and Queens Street, plus new LED lights for Temple Row
    • Planting flower beds throughout the town centre.
    • Tree pruning and clearing near St Giles Parish Church, to trees overhanging Temple Row and College Street.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “While we’ve already carried out a number of improvements to the streetscape this year, further planned updates are in hand for areas throughout the town centre. These works are already scheduled as part of planned improvements to the town centre. There are other works which are planned for, and which we would like to carry out, but those are dependent on funding.”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Performance and Regeneration, said: “While I’m very pleased with the extent of works which have already taken place in the town centre, I’m glad to see that further works are planned for the improvement of the area, and look forward to see them taking place.”

Joss Thomas, Specialist Officer for licensing said: “Taxi drivers are the eyes and ears of our streets. They are often in a position to help those with dementia and to be even more aware of what that person is going through has to be a good thing. I’d like to thank them all for taking part, particularly as this is a voluntary session and is not required for their licence conditions, and for recognising the significant role they can play in safeguarding our communities.”

Debbie Belton, Office Manager, said: “The session was really interesting and very helpful. We all feel better knowing we can help make a difference in a person’s life. The session took about an hour and I’d encourage other organisations who play similar roles in the community as we do to take part.”

The “Safe Place” scheme makes sure that everyone visiting Wrexham can have a safe place where they can go to when if they’re feeling anxious, panicked, stressed or particularly vulnerable. Local businesses sign up to take part in the scheme and then display a sign that registered users can recognise and know they will be able to get help from those inside.

It gives people the security of knowing they, or people they care about, have a safe place to go in times of need. The safe place can be a shop, pub, library, council building or any place that is publicly available. A sticker will identify the place as a “Safe Place” and it will also appear in the national database.

It is run by SWS (Standards of Wrexham services) and is part of a national scheme.

  • Make sure you’re registered to vote

Make sure you’re registered to vote

You should have received our Annual Household Enquiry Form in the post recently. We send it out every year to make sure the details for each address are correct and that you will be registered to vote when the next election takes place.

If you’re not registered your name will not be on the form – if you want to register the easiest way is online here.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

If you do register on line, you still need to respond to the Annual Household Enquiry Form via the methods detailed on the form’.

If you’ve moved homes recently you are asked to keep a special eye out for the form and check the details. Recent research shows that home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time.

Across Great Britain, 94% of people who have been at their property for more than 16 years will be registered compared to 40% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.

Your vote is important so please make sure you are registered to use it should an election be called.

  • When the sun’s out, barbecues are great – but don’t forget to recycle

When the sun’s out, barbecues are great – but don’t forget to recycle

In warm weather, having friends or family round and cooking food on a barbecue has become a big part of what we do. It’s estimated that around 135 million barbecues took place in the UK last year, and in Wrexham we’ll have played our part in this figure.

It’s good to hear we’re enjoying spending time outside, which is great for wellbeing, but are we thinking about recycling as much as we should? Perhaps not…

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said, “When it’s warm and the sun’s shining, many of us in Wrexham like to cook and eat our food outside. But just because food is cooked and eaten outside, this doesn’t mean we should treat it or its packaging any differently. We’re asking people to be mindful that there’s still lots of things that can be recycled.”

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    Leftovers

For starters, all uneaten food can be recycled. A good tip is to take your caddy outside and pop any bones and leftovers in as you go along. It makes cleaning up afterwards much easier, just make sure you keep the lid shut when you’re not using it to avoid any pesky flies.

Also, do you use wooden skewers for your kebabs? Because something you mightn’t know is that these can be recycled as food waste in your caddy, as can all wooden cutlery!

    Meat trays

Whether you’re cooking for two people or 20 people, with barbecues there’s usually a lot of plastic meat trays involved, and don’t forget, in Wrexham all plastic meat trays can be recycled at the kerbside!

Just make sure there’s no food residue on them when you recycle them…this is very important. It doesn’t take long – a quick rinse or wash in used dishwater usually does the trick – and this means it gets recycled into a much better quality product.

    Try to avoid disposable barbecues

We see why these can be appealing to some people, but they contribute massively to the throwaway culture that’s threatening the environment.

Having a reusable barbecue works out much cheaper in the long run. Reusable barbecues can last for several years, and when the time eventually comes to say goodbye to your trusty old grill, you can still recycle it as scrap metal at any of the three recycling centres in Wrexham 🙂

If you do use a disposable barbecue, you must make sure it’s fully cooled down and all the ashes have burnt out before putting it in the bin.

    Gas canisters

These are reusable, but if you do want to dispose of any canisters, please bring them to any of our three recycling centres. Do not under any circumstances try to put these in your black bin waste, as this will cause a fire risk at our recycling centre.

As always, thanks for recycling and doing your bit for Wrexham 🙂
