  • Vehicle Safety checks are a success

Vehicle Safety checks are a success

A joint operation aimed at ensuring the safety of vehicles on our roads was carried out in December by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), North Wales Police and Wrexham Council Licensing Department.

Officers checked numerous vehicles in the Wrexham area and took action where defects were found. These included advice or warnings to drivers for issues such as faulty lights to taking vehicles off the road for serious matters.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

The Licensing Department also conducted checks on taxis and drivers in order to ensure the safety of customers – an initiative that was welcomed by the taxi trade.

David Collings, Head of Enforcement Delivery at DVSA said, “Taxis and private hire vehicles play a critical role in keeping our country moving, allowing people to travel safely and easily. Many people in our communities, particularly those who are disabled and vulnerable, rely on them.

“It was reassuring to see that the majority of the taxi operators and drivers in the Wrexham area took their obligations seriously to provide safe and roadworthy vehicles – with only a small number of vehicles falling short of the standards required.

Councillor Terry Evans, Lead Member for Planning and Public Protection, said “ Partnership work on these issues was very valuable, especially during the busy festive period. It gives the people of Wrexham  confidence that safety and regulation of drivers and vehicles is being checked in order to enhance safety on our roads.”

Advice on vehicle safety is available on GOV.UK.

  • Open Call for Artist Facilitators: Multilingual Family Art Club

Open Call for Artist Facilitators: Multilingual Family Art Club

    Polskie Português عربي தமிழ் සිංහල

Tŷ Pawb is seeking expressions of interest from artists who are bilingual (or multilingual) to deliver monthly sessions as part of our reimagined Family Art Club.

Sign up to get Tŷ Pawb’s newsletters straight to your mailbox

    About Us

Tŷ Pawb is a cultural community resource, bringing together arts and markets within the same footprint. This coexistence celebrates the significance of markets within Wrexham’s cultural heritage and identity. Tŷ Pawb is a space for dialogue around subjects including social and civic issues, the environment, health, cultural identity, sustainability and education.

    Background

Family Art Club has been a consistent part of the Tŷ Pawb programme since our launch, offering families the opportunity to engage with artist-led creative making every Saturday morning in term time. The club encourages making not just for children, but for parents and carers as well. The club is offered on a ‘pay what you can’ basis.

As part of our ongoing mission to reflect and engage with Wrexham’s diverse communities, we are changing the format of Family Art Club to incorporate a broader range of delivery languages than just Welsh and English.

    The Project

Multilingual Family Art Club will welcome families of all backgrounds to participate. While the emphasis is on art, sessions will be offered bilingually, giving families the opportunity to take part in the artist’s first/additional language or in English. They should accommodate both first language speakers and beginners, with an emphasis on having fun and ‘giving it a go’ over formal teaching of either English or another language.

Four artists will deliver the programme, each leading one session per month. Artists will meet regularly to ensure that activities offer enough variety of materials and techniques for families to try.

    Person Specification

    • Registered self-employed and eligible to work in the UK
    • Able to communicate to a good standard in English or Welsh in addition to being able to communicate to a good standard in another language
    • Experience of developing and delivering high quality creative participatory arts activities for children, supporting different needs and abilities within a group environment
    • Strives to create a warm, welcoming and inspiring learning experience for a diverse range of families
    • Committed to upholding our safeguarding policy procedures to ensure the wellbeing and safety of our participants
    • This role is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

    Deliverables

To provide session plans in advance to the Arts Engagement Coordinator.

To ensure that appropriate equipment and materials are prepared in advance of the sessions, (with assistance from Tŷ Pawb caretakers setting-up tables and chairs).

To research, design and deliver 6 creative workshops, these should:

    • Be inspired by Wrexham’s cultural diversity or Wrexham as The Capital of Play
    • Include a range of art forms, techniques and materials
    • Be suitable for families with children aged 4-11 years
    • Be inclusive for all participants regardless of their language ability

To collect and record information for our reporting commitments including:

    • Participant attendance numbers
    • Participant feedback
    • Photo consent forms and photographs of the sessions (both to be provided to our Marketing Officer)

To ensure that the Useful Art Space and Family Art Club Cupboard are returned to a good state of condition at the end of the session, and that all materials and equipment is stored safely and tidily.

To comply with Tŷ Pawb health and safety, safeguarding and environmental policy, and to treat everyone involved in the project in a respectful, equitable manner.

    Fee and Timeline

We are looking to deliver a total of 40 sessions across 2023/24.

This means that each artist involved on the project will deliver 10 sessions each at a rate of £125 per session, resulting in a total fee of £1250.

In addition, each artist will manage a project budget of up to £250 to pay for any specialist materials or equipment not already available in Tŷ Pawb.

Multicultural Family Art Club will launch on Saturday 4th February.

    Expressions of Interest

To express your interest in this role, please email a CV and any relevant web links to heather.wilson@wrexham.gov.uk. Links could include a portfolio, videos under 5 minutes, social media or other content that demonstrates your suitability for the role.

We welcome applications from speakers of all additional languages (including British Sign Language), especially those most used in Wrexham including Polish (2.49%) and Portuguese (0.53%).

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of Tŷ Pawb’s ‘Arte Util’ ethos.

  • New project will help kick-start young lives

New project will help kick-start young lives

A new initiative to help young people develop confidence and learn important life-skills has just been launched in Wrexham.

The Kickstart Project aims to support young people aged 16+ who have complex needs or circumstances – helping them learn social and practical skills, further their education, find employment and live more independent lives.

The project will benefit many young people leaving care or at risk of homelessness, and is being delivered by Wrexham Council, Castell Ventures and Wales & West Housing Association.

The scheme will provide different levels of support, ranging from 24/7 supervised accommodation for those who need lots of help to begin with, to less intensive support for those already well on their way to living independently.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Councillor Rob Walsh, Lead Member for Children’s Services, said: “There is an assumption that once you become an adult, you must stand on your own two feet and make appropriate decisions on issues such money and finding work.

“However, for many people, particularly young adults with complex needs or facing challenging circumstances – for example, not having a family to support them – then it can be an incredibly unsettling time.

“But by providing the right support, we can build their confidence and set them on their way to becoming strong, independent adults.

“The Kickstart project will make a big difference to a lot of young lives, and it’s just one example of how Wrexham County Borough Council and its partners work behind the scenes to support our young people locally.”

When it comes to the cost of living, making sure you claim all the help and support you’re entitled to could make a huge difference.

  • Billy the dog sniffs out a quarter of a million illegal cigarettes.

Billy the dog sniffs out a quarter of a million illegal cigarettes.

More than 250,000 illegal cigarettes and 20Kg of illegal rolling tobacco (enough for 20,000 roll ups) were sniffed out and seized last month from shops and storage locations following raids across North Wales including Bangor, Rhyl, Caernarfon, and Colwyn Bay.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Officers from Trading Standards, Immigration Enforcement, Intellectual Property Office and North Wales Police took part supported by tobacco detection dog Billy from WagtailUK.

Roger Mapleson, Lead Officer for Tobacco from Trading Standards Wales said:  “Smoking kills over 5000 people in Wales every year and half of all long term smokers will die as a direct consequence of their habit. “Illegal tobacco is cigarettes or rolling tobacco that has been smuggled and where no duty has been paid. “This means it can be sold for less than half the price of legitimate tobacco in the informal economy creating a significant problem in our communities. “It makes it much easier for children to access tobacco and acquire a lifelong addiction and it makes it much harder for existing smokers to quit.”

“The results of these raids demonstrate how effective joint operations can be. “Illegal tobacco is distributed and supplied through organised criminal networks – this is often linked to other criminal activity and brings crime into our local communities.”

As well the large quantities of illegal tobacco recovered, officers seized £20,000 worth of illegal vapes along with a quantity of counterfeit perfume.”

Two premises have been closed down and one individual arrested. Investigations continue.
