  • Be aware of this Facebook Marketplace scam

Be aware of this Facebook Marketplace scam

The start of a New Year is often a time where people will be thinking about, or may have already started, having a bit of a clear out and possibly selling on some of their unwanted stuff.

One of the most popular platforms people are using to sell on any unwanted goods is Facebook Marketplace, but anyone planning on listing items here will need to be aware of a scam where the ‘buyer’ says they will use a courier service to pay for an item.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

    How the scam works

Initially the scammer will send a message to the seller pretending to be interested in their item. They then claim they will pay for the item by sending cash in an envelope which will be delivered by a courier company such as UPS Delivery or TNT Express.

Often the scammer will claim to be stuck in work, or unable to drive, hence the offer to send the envelope containing cash through the courier service. If the seller agrees to the unusual method, the ‘buyer’ will then ask for their name, address and email address.

Once they have this info, they will ask the seller to pay some kind of ‘insurance cost’ to the courier. The ‘buyer’ will try to explain that this is needed because the courier is shipping physical cash, but not to worry and that they will get this money refunded.

Meanwhile, the seller will receive an email appearing to be from the courier company, asking for the insurance cost to be paid so the courier company can make the delivery.

This will NOT be a legitimate email, no delivery will have been arranged, and the link in the email will direct the seller direct to a phishing site where the money will get paid to the scammer. The phishing site can also steal the debit/credit card information that is being used to pay.

“Take sufficient steps to keep yourself safe”

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said: “Always be extra cautious if a prospective buyer mentions sending you money in an unusual way, such as using a courier company to deliver cash. These supposed ‘buyers’ can be extremely convincing, but it’s really important you never try to make a payment to cover ‘insurance costs’ or anything similar, despite what you are being told. The email appearing to come from the courier service may look legitimate, but please remember this doesn’t necessarily mean it is. Always be suspicious, and take sufficient steps to keep yourself safe.”

    Report a suspicious email

If you spot a suspicious email forward it to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) – report@phishing.gov.uk

For more information see the National Cyber Security Centre website.

    Report a cyber crime

If you think you may have been the victim of fraud or cyber-crime, you should report this to Action Fraud via their website or by calling 0300 123 2040.

  • A483 Junction 7 (Rossett Inter-change) resurfacing works

    A483 Junction 7 (Rossett Inter-change) resurfacing works

The North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency (NMWTRA) has announced major resurfacing works on the A483 Junction 7 Rossett Interchange from 5 February that are scheduled to last for 9 weeks.

    The works involve:

    • removing the worn-out surfacing,
    • repairing and/or replacing the underlying concrete slabs
    • resurfacing with an improved surfacing product

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

The works will affect traffic both ways and there will be a contraflow in operation allowing one lane of traffic in either direction.

Will the A483 be closed at all during the works?

There will be full overnight closures at certain times within the programme to enable the installation and dismantling of the temporary traffic management system required to undertake the works. There will also be full overnight closures at the end of the programme as well to enable repairs and resurfacing within the crossover area.

Diversions will be in place during the closures.

The works are needed as the road surface has reached the end of its serviceable life. Once repairs are complete, the new surfacing will have none of the existing transverse joints which cause unacceptable amounts of noise when driven over by cars. The work will also significantly reduce any unplanned closures for emergency repairs on this section of the A483.

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader with responsibility for strategic transport, said, “Whilst the announcement that works will take place is welcomed it will nevertheless cause inconvenience to users of this busy road.

“Please allow plenty of time for your journey.

“Once completed this stretch of the highway will be far more pleasant to drive on”

You can read more about these works on the NMWTRA website.

  • January money-worries?

    January money-worries?

How to get help if you’re worried about debt

After the expense of Christmas and New Year, a lot of people are forced to tighten their belts in January.

Many of us rely on credit to pay for Christmas, and feel pressure to spend more than we can afford – which can leave us with a worrying financial hangover.

This year, the cost of living crisis is already putting households under pressure, and anyone struggling with debt is being urged to seek help.

There are various charities and Government-backed services offering support, including…

    StepChange

A UK debt charity offering free impartial advice.

    National Debtline

Another UK charity dedicated to providing free, impartial debt advice.

    MoneyHelper

A UK Government-backed initiative that combines support from the Money Advice Service, the Pensions Advisory Service and Pension Wise.

    Citizen’s Advice

You can also find useful information on the national Citizen’s Advice website.

Wrexham residents can also call Citizen’s Advice on 0300 330 1178.

The most important thing is ask for help, and to make sure you speak to an established charity or organisation that has your best interests at heart.

Leaving debt problems to fester usually makes things worse, so it’s better to tackle them head-on with the help of a trained and experienced debt advisor.

Last October, Wrexham Council set up a cross-party working group to support people through the cost of living crisis.

Councillor David A Bithell, who chairs the group, says:

“January can be a difficult time, and if you’re struggling with debt, it’s really important to reach out and get help.

“Charities like Step Change and National Debtline provide free impartial advice, and can help you get back on track.

“They won’t judge you or make you feel bad about your situation – they’ll listen and help you find ways to manage your debts.

“If you’re worried about money, please don’t sweep it under the carpet or bottle it up. Reach out and ask for help.”

You can find more information on the cost of living on Wrexham Council’s website – including grants and benefits, help with household bills, and how to look after your health and wellbeing.

  • Don’t leave extra general waste next to your bins

Don’t leave extra general waste next to your bins

We want to remind residents that although we will collect extra recycling (if it’s presented correctly), we do not take any extra bags of rubbish left next to general waste bins.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We don’t accept side waste, so please don’t leave any next to your bins. If you have any extra bags of waste that won’t fit in your bin, you will need to take them to one of the recycling centres. You can find the opening hours of the recycling centres in Wrexham on our website. Alternatively, you can keep hold of the bags until you have enough room to put them in your rubbish bin ready for your next scheduled collection.”

    How to present extra recycling

If your recycling boxes get full, you can leave any extra recyclables in solid containers next to your other recycling on your collection day and we’ll recycle the materials (leaving the containers behind for you to reuse again).

But if you do have extra recycling, please separate the materials as you usually would…for example, if you have extra plastic bottles and glass, please put the plastic in one container and the glass in a separate container.

Also, we will collect clean, flattened cardboard left by recycling containers as long as it is no larger in height or width than a standard issue blue sack.
