Two Wrexham businesses presented with prestigious careers support award

    Guest Article – Careers Wales

Two Wrexham-based businesses have been presented with Valued Partner Awards by Careers Wales for their work to support young people with careers learning.

Litegreen and Charles Owen received Most Supportive Small Business and Best Newcomer respectively from presenter Huw Stephens at the live awards ceremony on Tuesday 8 November at the Parkgate Hotel in Cardiff.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

These highly anticipated awards are a chance for Careers Wales to recognise employers who have delivered impactful and engaging careers experiences to pupils in Wales over the last twelve months.

Careers Wales works with schools and employers across the country to facilitate employer engagement activity, from high-impact regional careers fairs through to individual school activities, so young people are informed about the world of work, priority sectors and their career options.

Energy efficiency specialists Litegreen have supported a huge number of pupils at local school, Ysgol y Grango, through a wealth of activities, including an employability skills workshop, employer speed networking, an enterprise challenge, mock interviews and sessions to raise awareness of green issues.

The company have also supported Ysgol y Grango with their nurture garden that provides effective support and learning for the most vulnerable pupils at the school. Company director David Walker is an ex-pupil and has provided an alumni talk and given a valuable insight into his career journey.

Shanone Towers, a director of Litegreen said: “We’re really pleased to win this award – even the nomination just felt really rewarding. It has a different impact on you when someone else nominates you.

“We take this all very seriously. I used to train as a teacher, and when we set up Litegreen five years ago, it was on the agreement that I could keep a toe in youth work.”

David added: “Just sitting down for 10/15 minutes with the young people and doing a mock interview or talking to them, you see little snippets of skills and things you can tease things out of them.

“I like to think that they leave with just a little bit more confidence about their own set of skills and the things that they can do.”

Careers Wales Business Engagement Adviser Lesley Lloyd, who works closely with Litegreen said: “Shanone and David, the directors at Litegreen are a superb model of a school-employer partnership, and a company investing in the lives and futures of local young people.

As well as working with their partnered school, Ysgol Y Grango, Litegreen donates time and skills to support a number of education business events across the county.”

Charles Owen, a manufacturer of world-leading riding helmets, have worked with many schools in the Wrexham county. The company has supported mentoring interviews, enterprise days, apprentice talks and provided a digital interview skills and CV writing resource for schools.

They encourage all their staff to donate their time and skills to help support the project and have signed up to become a school partner to strengthen their support to pupils.

    Charles Owen

Anna Phillips, Head of HR at Charles Owen, said: “We’re really pleased to win the award – we really wanted to reach out to our community and help the younger generation.

“We really enjoyed doing the mock interviews, the apprentice talks, and we are working currently on getting young people into our factories so they can have more of an insight themselves.

“There are more roles in manufacturing than just in the factory and it’s nice for young people to see all the other opportunities available to them.

“We’re looking forward to continuing our work with Careers Wales.”

Lesley, who also works with Charles Owen, said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Charles Owen and see how quickly they’ve made a positive impact with pupils within the area of Wrexham.

“In a short space of time, they’ve already supported a huge number of young people with their careers learning.”

Nikki Lawrence, Chief Executive at Careers Wales said: “I am delighted to announce Litegreen and Charles Owen as winners of Valued Partner Awards this year.

“The awards enable us to thank businesses for inspiring, motivating and empowering pupils with work-related knowledge and experiences that will help guide them shape their futures.

“On behalf of myself and everyone at Careers Wales, congratulations to all the winners and we look forward to continuing our vital work with them.”

  • Householder fined over £400 for fly tipping

Householder fined over £400 for fly tipping

A Wrexham householder has been fined £440 with costs of £145 and a Victim Surcharge of £44 after he paid someone to take his waste and didn’t do the proper checks that they had a legitimate waste carriers licence and the waste was later fly tipped.

The waste was removed from a home in Ruabon and later found fly tipped on Church Street, Penycae.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

As householders we all have a “duty of care” to make sure that anyone we use to remove our rubbish has an official Waste Carrier Licence and you can check anyone out on the Natural Resources Wales website.

Most legitimate companies will happily show you their Licence and assure you that they will dispose of it responsibly at a properly designated waste site.

If they don’t have one then it’s very likely that your rubbish is going to be fly-tipped and if it’s traced back to you then you risk a fine of up to £5,000 and prosecution.

Our officers can also issue the householder with a £300 fixed penalty notice as an alternative to prosecution.

Darren Williams, Chief Environment and Technical Officer, said, “We take fly tipping extremely seriously and always check to see if the culprit can be identified. As this case shows failing to make the proper checks with Natural Resources Wales can lead you to court and a hefty fine.”

Popular musician Luke Gallagher puts on charity gig for free…

Local musician Luke Gallagher has a big heart when it comes to Wrexham people and in order to support families during these difficult times he’s putting on a gig at Yellow and Blue (YaB) on Tuesday 20 December.

Whilst Luke will not be paid – he’s asking that you give to get in.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

You can take toys or festive food or give a donation on the door. Everything received will be given to YaB to distribute to families that are struggling to buy gifts for their children or to put festive food on the table.

Doors will be open at 7pm and Luke will be on stage for an hour at 7.30.

Any proceeds taken from the sale of merchandise will also go to YaB in the form of food and toys.

If you can’t attend on the night you can give at the Golden Lion in Coedpoeth who have kindly agreed to take donations.

Luke also has three gigs over the weekend and the proceeds from those will all be donated to YaB.

Luke said, “It’s tough out there at the moment with no signs that it’s going to get better so I’d like to do something to make a difference this Christmas. I know that by working with Yellow and Blue help will be given to the right people in time for Christmas. Shine on Wrexham and let’s support those who need our help.”

“I’d also like to thank St Tidfal’s church for donating a large box of toys that I’ll be taking along with me on Tuesday.”

Cllr David A Bithell, Chair of the Cost of Living Group, said, “It’s a remarkable gesture and one that Luke can be proud of. I hope as many people as possible are able to donate something on the door in order to brighten up Christmas for families across Wrexham.”

Pete Humphreys of Yellow and Blue, said, “It’s a very generous act by Luke and I know he has a lot of followers who will do their best to support him both before and at the event.”

Local firm Fry Fresh makes generous gesture

A local firm has made a huge donation of potatoes to Yellow and Blue (YaB) community hub in Wrexham in order to help make Christmas a little easier for families in the county borough.

Phil Robinson, Accounts Manager, said, “We’re all very aware of how people are struggling with the cost of living and are happy to help in any way we can.

“We will also be donating anything we have left on our shelves before Christmas to ensure it does not go to waste.”

Nick Williams, Managing Director of Fry Fresh, said, “It’s difficult to hear of people’s struggles, particularly as we approach Christmas, and we felt it important to do something to get help directly into the communities. Thanks to Yellow and Blue who are doing an amazing job for people in Wrexham.

Cllr David A Bithell, Chair of the cross party Cost of Living Group, said, “I’d like to thank Phil Robinson and Fry Fresh who made the donation to Yellow and Blue earlier this week – it’s an incredibly generous gesture that I know will be well received by many across the county borough.

  • Still need that special Christmas gift that’s affordable and in great condition?

Still need that special Christmas gift that’s affordable and in great condition?

We know just the place where you can find it, plus you get the added benefit of supporting a fantastic local charity when you purchase.

Look no further than the Nightingale House Hospice reuse shop in Bryn Lane recycling centre! It’s sometimes referred to as a bit of an Aladdin’s cave (although Santa’s grotto might be more appropriate).

As we continue to get closer to Christmas there’s so many things you can get from the reuse shop to help spread some festive cheer.

If you need help filling up those stockings…

Then the reuse shop can definitely help you out. If you’re thinking of buying a TV, go over and take a look…there’s usually an abundance of them in stock, with varying sizes to choose from.

And if you’re unsure about buying a used TV, please know that all items are cleaned and safety tested before they’re sold 🙂

But if you’re after something a bit smaller, there’s usually a selection of items such as gift sets, toys, computer games, board games and cool ornaments to fill up those stockings.

Looking to get fitter in 2023?

A popular New Year’s resolution is getting a bit fitter and always a good starting point for this is cycling.

Need a bike? You’re in luck!

The reuse shop has many, many bikes that you can choose from. Children’s bikes or adult bikes – whatever you’re looking for – the reuse shop is bound to have something that fits the bill 🙂

Let’s face it, there’s not many people who wouldn’t want a bike for Christmas. All the bikes are stored outside the shop for you to give them a thorough checking over, so come and pay a visit.

    Regift your unwanted presents

At one time or another we’ve all received Christmas presents that don’t quite hit the mark 🙁

But just because it’s not your cup of tea, this doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be perfect for someone else. Regifting involves giving your unwanted gifts to others and the reuse shop would be very grateful if you’d consider donating these items to them.

You can donate to the re-use shop at any of the three recycling centres; just speak to one of the attendants who’ll point you in the right direction.

    Donate all year round

You can make donations to the reuse shop all year round, so if it gets to January and you don’t want to store your artificial Christmas tree or decorations until the following year the shop will be happy to take them off your hands.

The shop will store the items and sell them on the following year. They will gladly accept your donations even if they’re out of season.

    Opening hours

The reuse shop is open daily between 9am – 5pm, but will close for Christmas on Friday, December 23. Please bear this in mind if you’re planning to pop in.

The shop will then reopen in the new year on Tuesday, January 3.

  • Increase agreed for Supported Lodging Payments

Increase agreed for Supported Lodging Payments

At a meeting of our Executive Board earlier this week members agreed an increase to the payments made to our Supported Lodging hosts.

Current payments of £140 per week will now be increased to £255 per week.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Supported Lodgings placements provide a young person with a room of their own in a private home where they are a member of the household, but are not expected to become a member of the family.

The host provides a safe and supportive environment, working alongside WCBC Children’s Services Leaving Care Team to help and support the young person in gaining the skills needed for an independent adult life.

Who are the young people in Supported Lodgings?

The young people are those who are leaving care or who can no longer live at home, and are not ready to cope with living on their own yet.

Cllr Rob Walsh, Lead Member for Children’s Services, said, “I am really pleased this increase has been agreed. It’s essential that we do everything we can to support young people to remain in the community they are familiar with and also get help and support learn skills for independent adult life.

“The increase will hopefully increase the recruitment of new hosts and help retain current hosts.”

  • It’s time to tackle romance fraud

It’s time to tackle romance fraud

We’re supporting CrimeStoppers to fight Romance Fraud that’s affecting individuals across the UK and here in Wrexham.

More and more people are meeting people online, on social networks, through online gaming, dating platforms, anywhere people chat online – and therefore more and more people are building relationships with people they’ve never met in person.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Online dating, for example, is now one of the most common ways to meet a romantic partner. While most users are genuine, unfortunately some are looking to take advantage of individuals looking for love.

Unfortunately fraudsters have seen how they can take advantage of this and now use fake profiles, fabricate stories, manipulate, and coerce – all with the intention of befriending innocent people on the internet, and with the eventual aim of convincing the innocent person to send them money.

    This is romance fraud.

The average person loses £10,000 over the period of the scam. In 2021, over £99 million was lost collectively to romance fraud.

Romance fraud can happen to anybody. All genders, ages, sexual orientations. People of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds are victims, with gay men disproportionately targeted, accounting for 12.4% of victims overall in 2021.

Signs to spot a Romance Fraud:

    • Before you’ve really got to know them, they declare their love quickly.
    • They make excuses why they can’t video chat or meet in person.
    • They try quickly to move your conversations off the platform you met on.
    • When they ask for financial help, it’ll be for a time-critical emergency, and the reason will pull at the heartstrings.
    • They may get defensive if you decline to help.
    • They might tell you to keep your relationship private and not to discuss anything with your friends and family.

Read more about this on the CrimeStoppers website

If you are a victim of Romance Fraud You can contact us on the phone or online – just call free on 0800 555 111 or use our online form here on our website 24/7, 365 days a year.
