  • With Halloween approaching…how about some ghost stories?

With Halloween approaching…how about some ghost stories?

    Mwahahahahahahahaha… (cough – cough)

Please excuse us, just clearing our throat!

There’s a lot of historical tales floating around your local area…some of them are beautiful, some of them are wonderful – incredible even – and some of them are DOWNRIGHT SPOOKY!

We’re going to cover some of these creepy myths that exist. You may have heard some of them before – and some may be new to your ears…

Either way, grab on to your hat…and prepare for the ride…

Here’s a couple of tales from Haunted Clwyd by Richard Holland. It’s a great book with many more local stories inside.

THESE TWO SIMPLE STEPS COULD TURN YOU INTO A RECYCLING SUPERHERO…

    ‘Lady Blackbird’

As you may or may not know, the village of Marford near Wrexham is famous for its “gingerbread” style of houses. They’re very charming houses and they’re full of character.

And many of them have crucifixes built into their design…

But why they were built in this style is for a much more sinister reason. These 19th century houses were actually built like this to warn off a ghost!

This is a tale of vengeance from beyond the grave…

In 1713, Madam Margaret Blackbourne of Rofft Hall was brutally murdered by her womanising husband, George Blackbourne. The murder went unpunished as the coroner (who was conveniently a relative of George) gave a verdict of misadventure…a mishap basically.

George married a new, younger wife six months later – but they’d have no peace together…

Margaret’s corpse is said to have clawed her way out of her coffin and walked through the village of Marford. She stopped at each house, tapped on their windows – sending the occupants into hysterics.

She then made her way to her former home, specifically the wedding chamber to confront George and his new bride. Margaret repeated this journey every night…the villages barricaded themselves inside and George and his wife moved to Rossett to escape her.

    But she followed them!

Eventually an archdeacon was called in to ‘pray down’ the ghost, but he was only partly successful. Although her corpse was now at rest, her spirit continued to roam – hence the crosses being built into future houses.

The tragic tale of Margaret Blackbourne has become a legend and she’s now better known as ‘Lady Blackbird’.

    Ghosts on your High Street?

A premises on High Street in Wrexham has a long standing reputation for hauntings. It was taken over by an insurance brokers in 1986, and soon after, things are said to have gotten a little strange…

Computer discs scattering themselves across a room, unexpected chills and sudden muggy warmth, filing cabinets suddenly opening and closing – you name it! It’s even said that a photocopier started leaking water!

And in the mornings following this, it’s said that water would be found dripping from different appliances and sockets. Engineers were called out – but they couldn’t solve the mystery. One even simply filled in his report card with a single word… “weird”.

The liquid would leave behind a milky residue. This was sent off for analysis, but never identified.

And then it all stopped! Just like that…and the mystery was never solved.

Shortly after this, the Evening Leader ran an article about the strange happenings at the building. Someone who worked there many years before was quoted on their own experiences:

“Several times I felt as if someone unseen was standing behind me. It was quite an extraordinary feeling. Stock-taking at night was always difficult. None of the staff would stay late.”

    Hmm…very strange indeed.

If you enjoyed these tales, it may be worth heading over to Wrexham Museum archives search room.

These tales were taken from Haunted Clwyd by Richard Holland, which is one of the many books housed in the search room.

Jonathon Gammond, Interpretation and Access Officer at Wrexham Museum says:

“There are many more books and articles about the area’s history. All these are accessible for free in the search room on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays each week.

“We would like to reassure potential users that any paranormal activity is associated with other parts of the building and the sites in Bersham – the search room is quite safe… at least during opening hours.”

  • Be fan-plastic at recycling! How you can recycle plastic in Wrexham…

Be fan-plastic at recycling! How you can recycle plastic in Wrexham…

    Don’t get confused by plastic!

A recent article on BBC News revealed that a whopping 47% of people at home disagree about what should or shouldn’t go in their plastic recycling.

Part of the problem stems from the fact that there are many different types of plastic. But in Wrexham, most of these plastics can be recycled at the kerbside…so save the arguing for what to watch on TV that evening 😉

We want to make it a bit clearer as to which plastics can be recycled in Wrexham.

    It’s not that scary…we promise!

THESE TWO SIMPLE STEPS COULD TURN YOU INTO A RECYCLING SUPERHERO…

    Which plastics?

Basically any type of plastic bottles, all plastic food trays, plastic pots and plastic tubs (any colour) can be recycled at the kerbside in Wrexham. It’s as simple as that!

You can’t recycle plastic bags, cling film, bubble wrap or crisp packets at the kerbside.

    And give them a swill…

Give all of these a swill in your used dishwater before you recycle them. All the items should be clean and free from any food or drink residue when you recycle them. If you’re unsure, watch our video 😉

    A useful tip…

You can make things easier for us by removing the lids from plastic bottles. “How does this help?” we hear you say…

It means you can easily dispose of liquids and wash out the bottles. So before recycling, please remove the lids, wash and squash the bottles. This gives you more room in your recycling box. We can still recycle the lids, so just throw them in with the rest of your plastics and cans.

    It’s not just the kitchen!

It’s fair to say that most of the plastics in our kitchens are getting recycled…

But don’t neglect the bathroom! The plastics in your bathroom can be recycled at the kerbside too…

So when you’ve finished with your shampoo bottles, shower gels, bathroom cleaners etc. don’t forget to recycle these. But with no residue please 🙂

    Let’s hit the target!

The goal in Wales is for 70% of plastic waste to be recycled by 2025. Wrexham is getting better and better at recycling and we want to play our part in achieving this.

For more nationwide statistics, take a look at the BBC News article. It’s very interesting!

Hopefully you now have all the information you need to be fan-plastic at recycling. Feel free to pass your expertise onto others 😉

  • Armed Forces group meets to mark WWI centenary

Armed Forces group meets to mark WWI centenary

As you might already know, we’ve got plenty of events in Wrexham to commemorate the end of the First World War.

Earlier this week, our Armed Forces group – which represents and supports serving forces members and veterans alike – met to mark the start of the series of centenary events taking place in Wrexham, and to promote the associated booklet listing the events on offer throughout the county borough.

THESE TWO SIMPLE STEPS COULD TURN YOU INTO A RECYCLING SUPERHERO…

For a copy of the booklet, just click the image below:

Cllr David Griffiths, Armed Forces Champion for Wrexham Council, said: “It is right and proper that we commemorate all those from Wrexham who served during the First World War, and all members of the Armed Forces group felt it was only right that we meet as part of the centenary commemorations.

“And, of course, members of the group each represent associations and organisations which will have an interest in taking part in the upcoming events to mark the end of the First World War, and they will be able to spread the word of the events available among their respective organisations.”

The booklet and a number of events were funded by the Covenant Trust Fund.

The group also met to promote the Royal British Legion’s Thank You campaign, which encourages member of the public to express their thanks to those who fought in the War by learning about the generation which lived through it.

  • Disability sports event coming to North Wales

Disability sports event coming to North Wales

Do you have an interest in disability sport? Maybe you’re the carer, friend or relative of someone with a disability who might want to try out such sports for themselves? Or maybe you have a disability yourself and want to give sports a go, but don’t know where to start?

The insport Series, which celebrates disability sport, will hold an event at Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay, Conwy, on Sunday, October 21 – and people of all ages, at all ability levels and with any impairment are invited to get involved.

Officers at Wrexham Council have been involved in organising the free event, and people from across North Wales are encouraged to come along and try out as many of the sports on offer as possible.

THESE TWO SIMPLE STEPS COULD TURN YOU INTO A RECYCLING SUPERHERO…

There will more than 20 inclusive sports available to try out, including gymnastics, boccia, wheelchair basketball, rugby, tennis, cycling, archery and swimming.

Disability Sport Wales now offers over one million opportunities per year to disabled people across Wales. The insport Series, which travels across Wales, provides a perfect opportunity for people to try sports and find out more about the many local clubs that they can join.

Fiona Reid, CEO of Disability Sport Wales said “To have 24 Governing Body partners providing opportunities to over 700 school-aged children and young people, and 150 members of the community is a real testament to the strengthening philosophy of inclusion within Welsh Sport.

“This is one of a series of insport events across Wales, not only is it a great opportunity for families, individuals and groups to come down to a great facility and try out a range of activities with local clubs, it also opens up the opportunities for disabled children, young people and adults to glimpse their potential.

The insport series is a starting point to transform lives – whether that’s motivated by the fun of participating or the thrill of going on to compete.”
