  • Roll-out due for new food caddy liners

Roll-out due for new food caddy liners

Last year, households in Wrexham recycled more than 2,000 tonnes of food waste.

That’s 2,000 tonnes that would otherwise have gone to landfill, and was instead turned into very handy compost for parks, gardens and allotments.

We couldn’t have done it without your help – and we’re very grateful.

THESE TWO SIMPLE STEPS COULD TURN YOU INTO A RECYCLING SUPERHERO…

To keep things going, we’ll have a new round of compostable liners delivered to all houses with food waste caddies.

Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government, we’ll deliver new compostable food caddy-liners to households across the county borough throughout October and November..

    That’s about 60,000 homes – so the roll-out should over a month.

Each household will receive a complimentary roll of 52 liners, which will last the average household for about 17 weeks.

Any residents who need more liners can just tie one to the handle of their kerbside caddy on collection day.

    No food too small

Remember – there’s no amount of food waste that’s too small to go in the caddy.

Of course, the best thing to do with food is to avoid wasting it in the first place.

But obviously, with things like banana skins, egg shells, tea bags and plate scrapings, it can be unavoidable.

But just make sure you get them in the caddy – they’ll all make great compost!

And you can even recycle things like mouldy or out-of-date food, and ready meals (so long as they’re removed from their packaging).

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We’re very grateful to all householders in Wrexham who have helped us maintain these rates of recycling, and food waste plays a key part in that.

“Households can generate quite a lot of food waste, so any of that which goes into compost instead of simply being put in the black bin is a good thing. We hope the provision of the new liners will help people to continue the good trends that have already been set and keep pushing us to meet the 70 per cent targets.”

How to become a recycling superhero…in two simple steps.

Want a physical job? Love working outdoors? Read this…

Sometimes it’s difficult to find the time to stay physically fit. If you’re in work all day, the idea of exercising before or after work isn’t always very appealing…

But what if you could have an active job where you could stay fit while you work?

Yes, these do exist, and we’ve got some that are suitable for both men and women.

    Interested? Read on…

We’re currently recruiting for a number of Streetscene operatives. These are physical jobs and they involve working outdoors. So if you’re the type of person who’d prefer to be out and about rather than confined to an office, this could be a good fit.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

A large amount of these are loading jobs, working in refuse and recycling collection.

Refuse loaders pull the black or green bins to the refuse lorry and tip in via lifts before returning them to where they came from.

Recycling loaders take the boxes/bags of recycling to the recycling vehicle and tip them into the various compartments before returning them.

These are physical roles and you’ll do a lot of walking too.

Streetscene operatives also provide a range of other services, including highway maintenance, cemetery and cremation services, street cleansing and grounds maintenance.

So whichever of these you’re tasked with, you’ll be working outdoors and staying active in the process.

And get this. Working for a council can be a good career option – it usually comes with a pension, good leave allowance and relative stability.

If this sounds like you, please click on the link below to apply 🙂

The closing date is Friday, October 5.

We can almost hear the ‘Rocky’ theme playing in the background 😉

  • Landlords – is your property at risk of fire?

Landlords – is your property at risk of fire?

We’re supporting Fire Door Safety week and we’re calling on all landlords in Wrexham to check the fire doors on their property, make sure their tenants are using them properly. We are also encouraging landlords to undertake their own fire risk assessment of their property using guidance and a template provided to us by North Wales Fire and rescue service.

During Fire Door Safety Week we’ll be working to ensure both landlords and building owners make sure they’re not risking the lives of their tenants by having badly fitted, non-complaint or wrongly used fire doors.

    “Fire doors save lives”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “Fire doors save lives and both landlords and their tenants should be aware of how to make sure they are fitted properly and also used properly by tenants. There’s a useful risk assessment available online and I encourage landlords to take advantage of it during this important week.”

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

If you are a landlord and want to carry out a fire risk assessment on your properties you can download some useful information here.

There is also an easy to use 5 step checklist for Fire Safety Doors that can be used by anybody whether it be in your workplace, home or anywhere that fire safety doors are present: 5 STEP CHECK.

“Could mean the difference between life and death”

Paul Scott, Head of Business Fire Safety, said: “North Wales Fire & Rescue Service and Wrexham County Borough Council are working in partnership to reduce fires and improve safety in rental dwellings across the county. It is essential that landlords undertake fire risk assessments of their premises to help ensure the safety of their tenants. We strongly encourage landlords to routinely inspect their fire doors to ensure that they are in a good condition and operate correctly whilst tenants are reminded to report any defects to their landlord. A properly fitted and maintained fire door could mean the difference between life and death.

  • Check ‘n’ clean and love your leftovers – 2 simple recycling tips for a better Wrexham

Check ‘n’ clean and love your leftovers – 2 simple recycling tips for a better Wrexham

    Recycling…it’s a funny old business!

You might think you’ve got it cracked, and if you’re taking the time to recycle in the first place, you’re definitely on the right track…but…

With just a few simple tweaks, you might be able to do an even more brilliant job – benefiting both you and Wrexham.

Follow these two simple steps to get the best out of your recycling 🙂

    Check ‘n’ clean

This is the first step! Before you chuck an item in your black bin, have a good look at it and ask yourself the important question “can I recycle it?”

If you’re not sure, take a look at our website.

“Yes” you say – great! Now you’ve identified that it can be recycled you won’t have to put it in your black bin waste. As we know, these can fill up quickly and get very smelly…

“But won’t it still get smelly in my recycling?” we hear you say…quite simply no! It doesn’t have to. Give your jars, bottles and tins a quick swill in used dishwater to get them clean.

It doesn’t take long and it makes them much easier to recycle. You won’t have any smelly odours to deal with and you’ll be helping out Wrexham.

Because by cleaning the item, you’ll make it easier to recycle – helping us save or generate more money. Money we can spend on public services in Wrexham.

    Sounds good? Right, step 2…

    Love the leftovers

Fancy making something out of nothing? Read on…

If you put your leftover food waste into your black bin waste, it’s a bit of a waste!

By taking the time to recycle leftover food in your grey food caddy it can start its journey to becoming compost.

You’ll be freeing up even more space in your black bin and benefiting the environment at the same time.

These are two simple steps you can take to get the best out of your recycling…we’ll be giving you many more tips about recycling in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

It’s recycle week (September 24-30), so now is a great time to both ‘check n clean’ and ‘love the leftovers’.

Cllr David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport says: “It’s true that the people of Wrexham do a great job with their recycling, and we really appreciate the steps people are taking to improve their recycling habits even further.

“With some minor changes we know that we can get even better and we really thank everyone for taking the time to recycle.”
