  • FOCUS Wales announce Gruff Rhys show at new venue The Live Rooms, Wrexham

FOCUS Wales announce Gruff Rhys show at new venue The Live Rooms, Wrexham

Front man of legendary Welsh band Super Furry Animals and Mercury Nominated outfit Neon Neon, Gruff Rhys will play a special full band show at The Live Rooms, Wrexham on Friday, December 7.

The show follows the release of Babelsberg earlier this year – Gruff’s fifth solo album, and his first record release on Rough Trade Records since 2007’s classic Candylion.

The album’s ten tracks were initially recorded in early 2016 in a whirlwind three day session. The band he gathered for the record were his regular drummer Kliph Scurlock (ex-Flaming Lips) and multi-instrumentalists Stephen Black (Sweet Baboo) and Osian Gwynedd.

Over  the  course  of  Babelsberg’s  forty  something  minutes,  Gruff  manages  to  perfectly  document  our  troubled  and  troubling  times  with  humour,  grace  and  always  addictive  melody.  In  a  career  that’s  spanned  three  decades,  two  languages,  multiple  bands,  offshoots,  collaborations  and  one  boundless  imagination,  Babelsberg  is  arguably  Gruff’s  finest  set  of  songs  to  date.

As if releasing a new album isn’t enough, Gruff Rhys recently made his debut at Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a run of eight sold out shows, and will be extensively touring the US, Europe, and the UK, before appearing in Wrexham with his full band on Friday 7th December.

Tickets are on sale via focuswales.com/tickets

The council supports FOCUS Wales, helping to establish Hwb Cymraeg – the Welsh language element of the festival – over the past two years, promoting Welsh language and culture to an international audience

  • Former Mayor’s charity cheque handover

    Former Mayor’s charity cheque handover

We know there’s a lot that takes place in Wrexham which wouldn’t happen without the tireless efforts of fundraisers and volunteers.

A former Mayor of Wrexham, who served in the role for two years running, has paid thanks to their hard work with a cheque handover.

Cllr John Pritchard, the former Mayor of Wrexham who served in the role in 2016/17 and 2017/18 raised funds for a number of Mayor’s Charities during his time as Mayor.

Recently, Cllr Pritchard handed final cheques to his five chosen charities, rounding off the last of the fundraising work during his term.

The five charities in receipt of cheques were The Lauren Brown Fund, Dymanic, Blood Bikes Wales, Nightingale House Hospice and the Besti Cadwaladr Wrexham Renal Comfort Fund. The charities were presented with a donation of £1,130 each.

Representatives from each of the charities joined Cllr Pritchard for a small reception in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Cllr Pritchard said: “I was very pleased to be able to hand over the final cheques to each of my chosen charities, and am very grateful to my successor as Mayor, Cllr Andy Williams, for use of the parlour for the reception.

“I know all those who were in attendance were very pleased to attend the reception, and I hope those amounts donated will help them each to continue in their vital work.”

  • Remembering our greatest tragedy…Gresford Colliery disaster

Remembering our greatest tragedy…Gresford Colliery disaster

    Picture the scene…

It’s a Friday evening on September 21, 1934. 266 men are descending into the Dennis section of the Gresford colliery to begin their shift. It’s particularly busy as many of them are ‘doubling up’ so they’ll be free to watch the Wrexham match on Saturday afternoon. Sadly, only 6 of them shall return.

At 2:08am Saturday morning (September 22), an explosion tore through the colliery, killing countless miners in the process.

Edward Williams, Engine Attendant at the Dennis recalled: “It came nearer like thunder and then the place was all black. You couldn’t see anything.”

    ‘Just like hell’

Over 200 rescue workers were sent down in an effort to rescue the miners. All they recovered were 11 bodies – three of them belonging to the first rescue team. One of the rescuers described that mine as being ‘just like hell’.

Once news reached town, crowds began to gather around the mine – women and children waiting for loved ones who will never return.

After 40 hours of toiling it became clear to the rescuers that there was nobody alive left to save, so they decided to close the shafts at 6pm Sunday afternoon.

    The aftermath

The Gresford Colliery disaster was one of Wrexham’s greatest tragedies…but what is often overlooked is the aftermath of the disaster and the effect it had on the victims’ families and fellow workers. The explosion left 200 widowed, 800 fatherless and 1,600 jobless.

This was in a time where women weren’t provided with the same opportunities as men. Losing a husband left more than a grieving widow…it left a widow with the responsibility of providing for herself and her children without a source of income.

The rest of the men employed at the mine were forced to look for other jobs – often to no avail. The future seemed bleak for Wrexham; survival alone would become a struggle for many. It would be six months until the mine re-opened.

The tragedy became national headline news and even received recognition from the King. Word travelled about the struggling families and a relief fund was established to aid those in need. More than £550,000 was raised in total, however the lives lost could never be replaced.

    Remembering, 84 years on…

This year marks 84 years since the 266 men and boys lost their lives.

The annual memorial service to mark the Gresford Colliery Disaster takes place on Saturday, September 22 at 11am at the Miner’s Wheel Memorial, Bluebell Lane, Pandy. This is a short informal service, which everyone is welcome to attend.

Also, if you would like to find out more about this tragic event, it’s worth paying a visit to Wrexham Museum.

    Wrexham will always remember…

  • Enjoy stories of Wales’ mythic past on Halloween

Enjoy stories of Wales’ mythic past on Halloween

You might have heard of our current Land of Legends exhibition, on display at Wrexham Museum until Saturday, November 3.

As part of the exhibition, the museum will host a storyteller recounting tales from Wales’ oldest legends, in the tradition of the great Welsh bards.

Local storyteller Fiona Collins will lead children’s storytelling sessions at Wrexham Museum on Wednesday, October 31, immersing children in the magical world of the Mabinogion – a collection of unique Welsh folk tales.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

A session will take place for children aged five years and under from 11am until 11.40am, with a second session for children aged six and older from 3.30pm until 4.30pm.

As well as fitting into the suitably mythical backdrop provided by Halloween, the event will also provide parents with a great way of keeping their children entertained during the winter half term.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Entry costs £2.50 per child and £2 per adult, with free entry for children younger than one years of age.

Limited spaces are available, and pre-booking is required.

To book, just call in to Wrexham Museum on Regent Street, or call on 01978 297460.

Wales’ legendary past brought to life

Elsewhere in the Land of Legends exhibition, books, paintings, drawings, animation and costume will bring alive the mythical world of Welsh legends.

Margaret Jones’s original illustrations for Gwyn Thomas’s 1984 update of the Mabinogion are a highlight of the exhibition sparking the imagination and an interest in the Wales that existed a thousand or so years ago.

Look out for some legendary costumes, produced by the Museum’s Knit and Stitch group, for both adults and children to try on!

Making Wrexham a ‘gateway’ to Welsh heritage

Councillor Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “It is great to see Wrexham Museum’s partnership with the National Library of Wales bringing another exhibition packed full of medieval and modern treasures to Wrexham.

“This exhibition is one of the many cultural activities happening across the county borough proving that Wrexham is the gateway to Wales’s heritage for locals and tourists alike.”

  • The future of our heritage? Time to have your say

The future of our heritage? Time to have your say

NOTE: This consultation is now closed

How can we look after our heritage…and get the best from it?

We’d like to know what you think.

Our heritage is our story. The buildings, landmarks, objects, people – they’re all unique and irreplaceable.

They provide many of us with a sense of identity in Wrexham, and represent the sum of our experience through the ages – the things we’ve done, the difference we’ve made, the lessons we’ve learned (and the ones we haven’t).

Heritage is also hugely important to our economy. In Wales, the sector supports close to 40,000 jobs and generates £749m a year.

It’s also one of the reasons North Wales is a top visitor destination (it was recently cited by Lonely Planet as the fourth best place to visit in the world).

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    Different times

Wrexham Council published its last heritage strategy in 2005. But pressure on public spending in recent years has forced some tough decisions, with the closure of museums at Minera, Bersham Ironworks and Bersham Heritage Centre.

So these are different times, and we need a different plan to take us forward.

We think our new strategy will help us create a sector that effectively utilises heritage for the good of the economy. And more importantly, helps the county borough look after its past…so everyone can enjoy it.

But before we adopt the new plan, we want to know what you think. So take 10 minutes or so to have a read, and fill-in our questionnaire.

    Have your say

Councillor Hugh Jones, Lead Member for People, said: “Heritage helps define us as individuals, as a community, and as a nation. It’s also an important part of the economy in Wales, supporting jobs and investment.

“Our heritage in Wrexham comes in many forms – from castles, stately homes and former coal mines, to the words and objects from the past that are cared for in our museums.

“It’s important we look after our heritage, so please take a look at our new strategy and tell us what you think. If we want to get the most from our past, we need a good plan for the future.”

The consultation is open until Monday, October 15, 2018.

Visit Your Voice Wrexham to take part.

    [button color=”” size=”large” type=”square_outlined” target=”new” link=”http://www.yourvoicewrexham.net/kms/elab.aspx?CampaignId=737&noip=1&SessionId=MD4E547RWG”]YES…I WANT TO TAKE PART[/button]

    [button color=”” size=”large” type=”square_outlined” target=”new” link=” https://news.wrexham.gov.uk”]NO THANKS…I’M GOOD[/button]

Note that paper copies of the consultation are available at Wrexham Museum and local libraries.

The draft strategy will be presented to the council’s Executive Board later this year for formal adoption.

Alyn Waters Cafe – next step

We recently asked visitors to Alyn Waters Cafe for their views on how it should be run in the future after it was agreed to review the service as part of the budget process earlier this year.

Many of you took part and we’ve now put together a service spec for what could happen in the future – based on what you’ve told us.

You can join staff for a cup of tea and a chat about this spec and tender process and find how to get involved in the evaluation at an informal event to be held in the Cafe meeting room. It takes place on Monday 24 September between 11am and 1pm in the Cafe meeting room.

The cafe is owned by our Environment Department and Adult Social Care have, for a number of years, run it by providing work opportunities to their clients.
