It’s a GOAL! Fantastic result for Maes Y Llan primary school

The event was organised by the Active Wrexham Active Young People Team and the Wrexham Football Club Racecourse Community Foundation (RCF) as part of the Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars Project.

Over 100 girls from 11 primary schools; Acrefair, All Saints Gresford, Borras, Bryn Tabor, Cefn Mawr, Cynddelw, Deiniol, Hafod Y Wern, Maes Y Llan, Penycae & Plas Coch took part in the tournament with 13 teams entering in total.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF HOUSING IN WREXHAM.

Robert Darlington, Active Young People Officer from Active Wrexham, said: “One of Sport Wales’ main aims in terms of tackling inequality is to encourage and empower more women and girls to get active and stay active, so our team works hard to try to provide more opportunities for more girls across Wrexham get into sport and physical activity. Part of making that happen is ensuring the sporting talents of girls are recognised, encouraged and fostered.”

The eventual winners were Maes Y Llan beating Plas Coch in the final on a very wet but fun and enjoyable day.

As finalists, pupils from both Maes Y Llan & Plas Coch were invited to watch Wrexham AFC’s final home game of the season against AFC Fylde & also took part in a game on the pitch during half time.

  • New project off to a flying start!

New project off to a flying start!

Over 100 young people have already been referred to the ADTRAC project for Wrexham and Flintshire, which launched in February this year.  The project, which is supported through European Social Funds, aims to provide one-to-one bespoke support from ADTRAC personal mentors or NHS mental health practitioners as well as tailored training and courses designed to meet the specific needs and improve the wellbeing of young people aged 16-24.

The project offers personalised support to young people to remove barriers and help their progression into work, education or training.

    “Impressive Results”

Speaking at a celebration event for young people involved in the project on Friday 30 April 2018, Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths said:  “In a relatively short space of time, the ADTRAC project has achieved impressive results, with over 100 people benefiting from the services provided.  It is pleasing to see a number of agencies working in partnership, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in society by providing the opportunity to gain qualifications they might not have otherwise achieved.”

“Presenting the young adults taking part in the ADTRAC project with their certificates was a great honour.  After spending time with some of the individuals, it was clear to see their growing confidence and self-belief, and I hope even more young adults from Wrexham and the surrounding areas will benefit from the project in future.”

    Partnership working

ADTRAC is led by Grwp Llandrillo Menai across North Wales, working in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, Flintshire County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health board, with the support of the Department for Work and Pensions and Careers Wales.

“A real need for the service”

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-poverty said, “This is a fantastic start for the project and I am excited to see how it continues. With over 100 referrals already, it shows there is a real need for the service and that it will make a difference to young people’s lives in the area. I can’t wait to see how this project develops over the coming months.”

    What does ADTRAC offer?

    • One to one intensive support
    • Personalised action plans
    • Support to develop confidence and overcome barriers
    • Wellbeing support including the opportunity to access provision for mild/moderate mental health needs from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
    • Access to training
    • Employability support

Keen to get involved in disability sports? Take a look at this…

We know that there’s plenty of talented sportspeople and athletes out there.

And we also know the incredible good sporting clubs and community-level teams can do in their communities.

In recent years, the importance of disability sports has also grown – especially due to the fact that we have medal-winning Paralympians, such as 2016 Paralympics Bronze winner Sabrina Fortune, living and training in North East Wales.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF HOUSING IN WREXHAM.

Active Wrexham and Aura Leisure, in partnership with Disability Sport Wales, have organised a day of inclusive sports activities later this month.

The free event will take place at Deeside Leisure Centre, Queensferry, from 10am until 3pm on Sunday, May 13.

The day is open to anyone, of any ability, to try out sports and meet people from clubs and teams in both Wrexham and Flintshire.

Sports and activities will be open to anyone of any impairment

It’s open to adults and children, and people can come in groups, individuals or families – all that matters is they’re there!

“Incredible level of athleticism and dedication”

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty for Wrexham Council, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “I’m very pleased with our involvement in this event and I’d like to thank the Active Wrexham team for their work in organising the day.

“Disability sport is very important and thanks to the increased popularity of the Paralympics and Para sports at the Commonwealth Games, more and more people have seen not just the incredible level of athleticism and dedication achieved by those involved, but have also become aware of the fact that there are plenty of disability sports clubs right on their doorstep.

“Impairment and disability should never be a barrier to getting involved in sports, and anyone interested should definitely attend this event at Deeside.”

Cllr Ian Roberts, Cabinet Member for Education in Flintshire, commented: ‘’This is a great opportunity for disabled young people and adults to try out a number of sports. This event will showcase the fantastic facilities and sport opportunities that are available across Flintshire and the surrounding areas. We hope to increase the number of disabled people who engage in physical activity, either independently or with friends and family. Hopefully, this event will increase the profile of disability and inclusive sport opportunities at a local level.’’

  • What’s on the agenda this month?

What’s on the agenda this month?

May’s Executive Board takes place on Tuesday and the agenda has been released for us all to take a quick look at.

The agenda is pretty packed with 10 items of business as well as the usual apologies, declarations of personal interests and minutes of the last meeting.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF HOUSING IN WREXHAM.

    “Invest in our council houses”

Top of the list this month is the Council Plan 2018-2022, probably the most important plan we have to work to. It sets out what we’ll be doing in the future and how we’ll be keeping an eye on it. It shows how we’ll continue to invest in our council houses to bring them up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard and improve the homes of our tenants. It also looks at continuing the year on year improvements that have been made to make sure young people go on to education, employment or training when they leave school. Improving the town centre is also high on the list and increasing the range of services that we provide online.

How we’re managing our money is on the agenda as well –  and with over £112 million spent during the last financial year it’s important we make sure our money management is all in order.

    “Tourism plans”

The meeting will also hear how our Destination Management Plan – the plan that shows our tourism plans – plans to bring in visitors to the county borough to all our attractions and areas of interest.

One of our priorities as a local authority is to help tackle poverty and there’s a report that will look at how we’ll continue to do this.

The meeting will be webcast and you can watch and listen here from 10am on the May 8.

You can take a quick look at the whole agenda here.

Looking to relocate? Apply for a new town centre home

Brand new properties, situated near Wrexham Town Centre, are now open for housing applications with Wrexham Council.

Work began on two apartment blocks with 50 one and two-bedroom apartments on Rivulet Road – a joint venture between Wrexham Council and the Clwyd Alyn Housing Association – last year.

Construction work is expected to finish later in the summer, and applications are now open.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF HOUSING IN WREXHAM.

If you’re looking to relocate to a town centre location, or scaling up from a smaller property, they may be just what you’re looking for.

The brand new homes will be available at social-level rents, and they’ll also help keep energy bills low thanks to size and energy efficiency.

And the whole scheme is built to Lifetime Homes standard, which means they are suitable for anyone who has to occasionally make use of a wheelchair or walking frame.

“They’ll be in very high demand”

Cllr David Griffiths, Lead Member for Housing, said: “These new properties on Rivulet Road make a fantastic addition to our stock of available housing in Wrexham, and given their newness plus their very convenient town centre location, I’m sure they’ll be in very high demand.

“I’d also like to thank Clwyd Alyn for the work they’ve put in to this development – the standard of the new properties stands to their credit.”

Wrexham Council also has a number of two-bedroom properties throughout the county borough.

Anyone who wishes to apply for housing can contact 01978 298993.

Now in it’s seventh year, this annual open-air concert is held at the foot of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – part of Wrexham’s World Heritage Site.

It was recently named the best event in North Wales at the Visit Wales national tourism awards, and the second best in the whole of Wales (second only to last year’s Champions’ League final at the Millennium Stadium).
