My Welsh Sport – A draft vision for sport in Wales

Sport Wales is seeking your views on a vision for sport in Wales.

The consultation follows an exercise between November 2017 and February 2018 when the whole of Wales was asked to join a national “conversation” to help shape a vision for sport in Wales. The draft vision has now been published as a formal consultation and you are asked to take part.

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti Poverty, said: “This is an important consultation. Sport is for everyone and in Wrexham, as in the whole of Wales, the future is in the hands of all of us to have our say. I encourage everyone to follow the link below and play their part in this consultation.

  • Launch for traditional buildings skills programme

Launch for traditional buildings skills programme

Do you work in construction? Or maybe you want to receive free training in traditional building skills?

Are you a contractor looking to boost the skills of your workforce in Wrexham?

Thanks to a partnership with a number of providers and funders – including Coleg Cambria – we’ve been able to start a new raft of courses which will help give people the skills they need to work in the heritage building sector and upskilling of the construction industry in traditional building skills.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

Training workshops will start at Coleg Cambria’s Bersham Road site this week, with each day focusing on different courses.

    • Tuesday, April 17 – HNC Students
    • Wednesday, April 18 – Year 1 and 2 Plastering Students
    • Thursday – Year 1 and 2 Bricklaying Students

Each of the training days will run from 9am until 4pm.

Training will form part of town centre heritage plans

You might remember news from last year that we put together an application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), with the aim of kick-starting the regeneration of buildings in the Conservation Area in Wrexham Town Centre.

But rather than refitting old buildings using modern techniques, given that the buildings involved are covered by a Conservation Area – and are very prominent heritage assets in our town – we want to make sure that the methods used to regenerate those buildings are in line with the traditional skills that helped build them in the first place.

If the application for funding is successful, this push for traditional building skills would form a key part of that regeneration project, giving people sites to work on their newly-acquired trade skills while also bringing new life into some buildings in the conservation area.

The aim of the overall project is to provide education, training and upskilling to people in Wrexham to secure work in heritage construction – and these courses would form part of that.

    “Win-win for Wrexham”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Performance and Regeneration, said: “This will prove an excellent scheme for young people looking to acquire new skills – skills which will give them an edge in a very competitive sector.

“And, should our application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for town centre regeneration within the Conservation Area be successful, work undertaken on these courses would slot right in as part of that work – it really would be win-win for everyone involved.

“I’d advise any construction trades, students and apprentices – or even those already in the trade looking to add to their expertise – to come along and see what these courses could offer them.”

Ceri Rush Jones, CITB Local Manager for North & Mid Wales, said: “I have witnessed the hard work and passion that has gone into to create a strong partnership which has worked together to create an opportunity for local students to obtain relevant skills in heritage construction.

“This eventually will help maintain and repair buildings in Wrexham’s conservation area. In addition local construction companies are also invited to upskill their existing workforce to ensure local people can work within their own community. I applaud the hard work and dedication from all involved, and look forward to attending one of the sessions myself.”

A spokesperson for Coleg Cambria said: “Coleg Cambria is proud to support the traditional skills programme for Wrexham. The College has an excellent reputation for developing a wide range of construction and engineering courses.

“The opportunity to enhance these programmes with further traditional and historical skills is fully welcomed and supported. We have excellent links with our employer base and I am sure they will also appreciate the opportunities to upskill their workforce, enabling them to tender for work within the Wrexham regeneration projects.”

  • Do you want to be a “safe place?”

Do you want to be a “safe place?”

There’s a new scheme being launched in the town centre which needs businesses to get involved to make sure that everyone who visits can have a safe place where they can go to feel safe.

Not all of us are able to go about our daily lives with confidence, for some, visiting the town centre may be a necessary but difficult task. They may feel panicked, stressed or particularly vulnerable and when this happens a simple sign in a shop or door window can bring comfort and reassurance.

“Safe place in times of need”

The “Safe Place” initiative is being run by SWS (Standards of Wrexham Services) and is part of a national scheme. It gives people the security of knowing they, or people they care about, have a safe place to go in times of need. The safe place can be a shop, pub, library, council building or any place that is publicly available. A sticker will identify the place as a “Safe Place” and it will also appear in the national database.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

Users will be registered and will carry a “Safe Places Card” with telephone numbers on which they should always have with them. Once in a “Safe Place” staff will be able to use the telephone numbers to ring a family member or close friend to come and provide support.

All training is provided by SWS and will last no more than 20 minutes.

    “Eager to come on board”

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “I fully support this project which will go a step further to making our town centre as accessible as possible for visitors. I know it has been very successful in other areas and I am sure Wrexham businesses will be eager to come on board to register to become a “Safe Place”.”

  • Interested in where future development might take place ? Take a look at this

Interested in where future development might take place ? Take a look at this

We have developed our Local Development Plan (LDP) which is a long term land use and development plan that looks at what can be built and where it can be built. It will be used for housing, employment and other land uses such as leisure or education. The LDP will run to 2028.

At the moment this plan is out to public consultation and we’d like you to take part and let us know what you think. It’s an important document and it may affect you in the future so at the very least it’s worth taking a look at what could happen in or around where you live.

“Plenty of time to have your say”

The consultation will go on until May 31 and there’s still plenty of time to have your say. It could be that you object for the field opposite you which is proposed to be allocated for housing or other uses or that you object that an area isn’t allocated for housing or other uses but is to remain as open space.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

It will set out policies and proposals that will be used to decide planning applications and makes provision for the protection of historic assets, the natural environment and culture, the welsh language, renewable energy, greenspace and shopping areas within the County Borough

To take part please visit the LDP website here

    “Submitted to Welsh Government”

Once the consultation is finished we’ll take a look at what has been suggested/proposed or objected to and a final policy, including the representations made, will be submitted by council to the Welsh Government in November this year.

The Welsh Government will independently see how sound and sustainable the plan is and will report back to the council. If all goes to schedule the plan should come into effect in the spring of 2019 and will be monitored annually.

More drop-in events arranged for Extra Care Housing Scheme

There has been such a great response to a new extra care housing development in Wrexham that additional drop-in day events have been arranged to help people find out more.

We’ve already held a series of drop-in events for Maes y Dderwen, the Extra Care Housing Scheme on Grosvenor Road, developed in partnership between Wrexham Council, the Welsh Government and the Pennaf Housing Group.

The £10.5m Maes y Dderwen extra care scheme provides an alternative to residential care, and is specifically designed for local people aged 60 or over who wish to live independently in a home of their own with the peace of mind of 24-hour access to care and support.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

Interest in the new development has proven so popular that we’ve arranged another series of drop-in information events at Wrexham Museum, Regent Street.

The upcoming dates for the information event are:

    • Monday, April 16 – 10am to 4pm
    • Saturday, April 21 – 11am to 2pm
    • Monday, April 23 – 10am to 4pm
    • Monday, April 30 – 10am to 4pm

Photographs, plans, a short film, brochures and fact sheets on Maes y Dderwen will be available, and a representative from the Pennaf Group will also be on hand to answer questions from any interested parties.

    “Interest is building up”

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Adult Social Care at Wrexham Council, said: “Interest is building up for Maes y Dderwen and we’re very glad to say that news of the development has already attracted some very positive feedback – but we know some members of the public may be considering Extra Care as an option for their future housing, and we wanted to hold further information events to make sure they could get all the information they need.”

Steve Robinson, Extra Care Services Manager with Pennaf added: “Maes y Dderwen has been specifically designed to enable people to live well, in a home of their own, with access to support that can adapt as their needs change.

The scheme is an excellent option for those with a wide range of support needs, from those just looking for a little extra help to those with more complex requirements.”

Anyone interested can just pop in on one of the drop in sessions, or can contact us by phoning 0800 183 5757 or emailing enquiries@tyglas.co.uk

Alternately, you can visit the Maes y Dderwen website here to find out more.

Maes y Dderwen has been funded with support from the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant  (SHC) and Vibrant and Viable Places funding (VVP) secured by Wrexham County Borough Council, along with private finance arranged by the Pennaf Housing Group.

  • Help available for veterans to hear better

Help available for veterans to hear better

A former Welsh Guardsman has called on veterans with hearing loss to get support from a new service run by charity Action on Hearing Loss Cymru.

Steve Liversage, a 27 year veteran of the Welsh Guards, lost his hearing due to exposure to gunfire which also led to tinnitus – a loud and persistent ringing in his ears.

Steve said: “People don’t realise how hard it can be to lose your hearing. It makes it very hard to have a conversation and it really knocks your confidence having to ask someone to repeat themselves over and over again. This made me feel very lonely.”

The Aged Veterans Project is funded through the Ministry of Defence’s Aged Veterans Fund and has been launched to support veterans across Wales born before 1950 who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

The free service offers information and support in the community and in people’s homes, providing basic hearing checks, trials of equipment and support before and after hearing aids have been fitted.

Rebecca Woolley, Director of Action on Hearing Loss Cymru said “Deafness, hearing loss and tinnitus can be incredibly isolating and can lead to mental health problems and depression. Research shows that retired soldiers are more than three times more likely to experience hearing loss than the general population, often due to repeated exposure to small arms fire, artillery, engines and explosives. This new service will help veterans across Wales get support.

Armed Forces Champion, Cllr David Griffiths, encouraged veterans to get in touch, he said “there must be many veterans in Wrexham who are suffering with hearing loss, tinnitus or similar and as a consequence are becoming more and more isolated. I encourage either them or their families to get in touch to see just how much help there is available to improve their quality of life. We have worked with Action for Hearing Loss and we are very proud to have been awarded their Louder than Words Charter Mark for improving our services for people with hearing loss.”

Signs that indicate hearing loss include:

    • Asking for things to be repeated or responding incorrectly in conversations
    • Not hearing the doorbell or phone
    • turning up the TV and/or being asked to turn it down
    • Not joining in group conversations as much as before, nor not going out to the pub or other gatherings as often
    • Starting to feel isolated, lacking in motivation or feeling depressed.

If this sounds like you or someone you know staff at the project would love to be able to help.
