DDA Compliant? How are we doing now?

We all had to step up our game in 2005 and make sure our buildings, shops, schools and business premises were easy to access by disabled people. It was as a result of the Disability Discrimination Act which came into force and should have made life a little easier for disabled people.

Did it work? Well, Wrexham was recently visited by Disability Rights Campaigner, Damian Plant, from Llandudno who then got in touch with the Mayor, Cllr John Pritchard, with his findings and it seems we’re doing OK.

    “Geared up for wheelchair access”

One of the places Damian tried to gain access to was Wetherspoon’s on the High Street. At first glimpse it looked as if the steps leading into the bar would be a problem for wheelchair access. A further visit with the Mayor showed that bar was very much geared up for wheelchair access with a portable ramp and a bell to ask for assistance. Staff even pointed out that they had an online app and a table service could be made available to prevent queuing at the bar.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We want our pubs to be open and accessible to everyone. We are proud of the fact that our pubs offer excellent facilities for people with disabilities and that they are easy to enter for wheelchair users.”

    “Staff awareness raised”

Lifts can also sometimes pose problems for disabled users and in Eagle’s Meadow some boxes were blocking access. A quick call to Eagle’s Meadow manager, Kevin Critchley, also paid rewards and staff were more than happy to make sure the boxes were moved and staff awareness raised.

The Mayor, Cllr John Pritchard, said: “It’s good to know that in Wrexham we’re certainly on the right tracks to making life easier for our town centre disabled visitors. It’s not perfect and the recent visit with Damian showed just how easily things can be resolved and access made easier. We’ll never be 100% compliant due to the nature of listed building legislation but we can try to overcome obstacles whenever they are pointed out to us.”

    “Things are improving”

Damian, commented after his visit: “It was good to see how things are improving for disabled people and Wrexham has done very well. There are however still many places that for some disabled people, access is impossible or difficult and I will continue my work throughout the region to raise awareness of the problems we face on a daily basis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mayor for the time he took to meet with me and also for his genuine concern about the difficulties faced by disabled people every day. Thanks also to all the staff who helped make this visit possible.”

Come and find out more about Wrexham’s new Extra Care housing scheme this week….

A series of drop-in information events are being held this week for people wanting to find out more about the new Extra Care housing scheme on Grosvenor Road.

The £10.5m Maes y Dderwen extra care scheme is specifically designed for local people aged 60 or over who wish to live independently in a home of their own with the peace of mind of 24-hour access to care support.

The scheme is a partnership development between Wrexham County Borough Council, Welsh Government and Tŷ Glas Housing Society, part of the Pennaf Housing Group.

Anyone interested in the new apartments either for themselves or for a family member, can call in to meet the team who are hosting information events at the Wrexham Museum in Regent Street daily from March 13 to 17.

    Still a chance to apply

Lead Member for People – Health and Adult Social Care, Cllr Joan Lowe, said:“The scheme is an excellent option for people who have a care or support need, yet wish to retain the independence of living in a home of their own, and it’s great that the new development will be open this summer,”

Carol Thomas, Extra Care Manager for the Pennaf Housing Group added: “We’ve already received many applications from people who want to live at the Maes y Dderwen scheme.

“There is still a chance to apply, subject to certain criteria, and we’re looking forward to meeting more potential new applicants or their family members at the information events”.

Maes y Dderwen is funded jointly by Welsh Government Social Housing Grant and Vibrant and Viable Places Funding secured in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council along with private finance arranged by the Pennaf Housing Group.

A new housing option for the town

Lead Member for Housing, Cllr David Griffiths, said: “This scheme will offer a vital new housing option in the town which will cater for people with a wide range of care and support needs. This includes those who need just a few hours of support a week to those with higher needs who may be considering moving to a residential care home.

“I hope people will take advantage of the open day events to see if they could benefit from this type of accommodation.”

Local Member for Grosvenor, Cllr Marc Jones, said: “It’s good to see the building is now approaching completion, particularly for those of us who live locally and have seen this key site in the town transformed into a very modern looking housing scheme.

“I hope the independent living options which are on offer here will become a very useful housing option in this part of the town and that the new residents will become part of the local community.”

    • The drop-in information sessions will be held at the Wrexham Museum, Regent St, Wrexham LL11 1RB.
    • They will be open from 10am–4pm on March 14, 15 and 16 and from 11.30am–2.30pm on Saturday March 17.

Switched on car parks on the way

You may have read recently that we’re looking to introduce electric charging points in car parks across the county borough: https://news.wrexham.gov.uk/get-set-to-be-all-charged-up/

Well, we’re pleased to report Executive Board has just approved the proposals and chargers will soon be installed in car parks at Waterworld, Tŷ Pawb, Tŷ Mawr Country Park, Alyn Waters Country Park and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The move underline’s our council’s commitment to reduce carbon and promote energy efficiency.

    “Make an Earth Hour Promise”

We’ve also been asked by the World Wildlife Fund, organisers of Earth Hour, to make an “Earth Hour Promise” – a promise that will help protect the planet and show our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and we’re able to now make this promise to the WWF by installing these chargers.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment, said:

“As a council we are committed to reducing emissions and reducing our carbon footprint across the county borough. The move compliments many of our other green initiatives which include Wales’ first Solar Farm in Legacy, and installing solar panels in council properties. The Welsh Government is also looking for a carbon neutral public sector by 2030 and the UK expects to stop the sale of diesel and petrol cars by 2040 and this initiative will go a long way to supporting both of these goals.”

    “Switch off for one hour”

Earth Hour is now a global, annual event and this year it is taking place on 24 March. Everyone is being asked to turn off their lights for one hour at 8.30pm and join forces with landmarks across the globe such as the Senedd in Cardiff and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

See what’s in the North Wales Growth Deal – download it now

If you invested £383 million in something, and got £1.3 billion back, that would be a pretty good return. Wouldn’t it?

Well, that’s the exciting ‘deal’ put forward by North Wales to the UK and Welsh governments at the end of 2017.

If you missed the story, or want to know exactly what’s in the Growth Deal for North Wales, you can download the document from the North Wales Economic Ambition Board website.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

    What’s it all about?

The document explains how – with the right investment – the region can develop its economy.

It focuses on three key objectives.

    • Creating a smart economy that encourages innovation in high-value industries.
    • Developing a resilient economy by creating job opportunities, helping North Wales retain a skilled workforce.
    • Creating a connected economy, with strong road and rail links with the North West and the rest of the UK, as well as high-quality digital infrastructure.

It says an injection of £383.4 million could help attract £1.3 billion of investment into North Wales – a return of the £3.40 for every pound spent. As well as over 5,000 new jobs, new businesses and new housing.

The document contains lots of evidence, figures and projections, but it’s only 30 pages long and easy to read.

    So what happens next?

The North Wales Growth Board – the partnership behind the proposals – has submitted the document to the UK and Welsh governments, and will now start negotiations to try and secure the investment needed to turn its vision into reality.

The partnership includes all six councils in North Wales (including Wrexham Council), as well as the region’s universities, colleges and the private sector.

Keep tabs on the NWEAB website for news and info about the Growth Deal.

  • Let’s all #PressforProgress

    Let’s all #PressforProgress

In the last 12 months, we have seen huge stories hit the press that have fuelled global momentum for gender parity – think #MeToo, #TimesUp and more.

And this year’s International Women’s Day is building on this momentum and using the theme Press for Progress to highlight the need to keep motivated in the drive towards women’s equality.

Held every year on March 8, International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911 and was started by the Suffragettes. This year’s 107th celebration also marks the 100-year anniversary of Parliament passing a law that allowed some women (over 30) to vote for the first time and the 40th anniversary of Welsh Women’s Aid.

In Wrexham, the day is being marked in many ways. Wrexham Council’s participation team will be giving young women aged between 11 and 20 the chance to shadow inspirational women in various jobs and settings for the day, while charity CLPW Community Interest Company are hosting a women’s-only dinner at Luso Foods Portugese Flavours – and the great news is that this event has proved so popular it has sold out!

There will also be a free screening of the film Suffragette at the Stiwt Theatre in Rhos on the day with opening words from Cllr Gwenfair Jones.

The overall aim of International Women’s Day is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and mark the call to action for accelerating gender parity.
