  • Mayor brings some cheer to Wrexham Charities

Mayor brings some cheer to Wrexham Charities

Four local charities in Wrexham have had their coffers boosted by the Mayor of Wrexham today after he presented them with cheques following his first year in the civic office.

Representatives of all four charities, Nightingale House, League of Friends at Maelor Hospital, Dynamic and The Lauren Brown Fund,  were invited to the Guildhall where they received cheques totalling £6287.00.  Nightingale House also received a cheque for £1910.00 from the West Cheshire MG Owners Club.

Each year the serving Mayor works and holds events for his chosen charities and over the last few years many thousands of pounds has been raised for local charities in this way.

Unusually, the current Mayor, Cllr John Pritchard was asked to serve for a second term in office after the nominated Mayor wasn’t re-elected in the local elections earlier this year.

“staffed by volunteers who work tirelessly”

    The Mayor, said:

“Local charities are often staffed by local volunteers who work tirelessly for their cause.  It’s always a pleasure for me as Mayor, and I know all former Mayors, to help that work by fundraising during our year in office.  I will have that privilege for another 12 months  and this year I will be fundraising for Nightingale House, the Lauren Brown Fund, Dynamic, Wrexham Renal Comfort fund and Bloodbikes Wrexham.  I would also like to thank staff in the civic office who are responsible for arranging many of the fundraising events.  Their work is very much appreciated.”

  • Support in Line for “Groundbreaking” Heritage Project

Support in Line for “Groundbreaking” Heritage Project

A major heritage project featuring attractions dating back millions of years could soon receive a boost from Wrexham Council.

The Brymbo Heritage Project, which looks to unlock the potential of Brymbo’s rich industrial and prehistoric past, has gathered momentum over recent years looking at ways to regenerate the village and the surrounding area.

The project – led by Brymbo Heritage Trust – has some ambitious plans for the village – including restoring the former Brymbo Iron and Steelworks site, and the exploration and conservation of the nearby Brymbo Fossil Forest; a major site of geological interest with fossils dating back more than 300 million years.

Thanks to backing from Wrexham Council, the Trust was able to attract nearly £2,000,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Create your Space program, allowing it to kick-start its Roots to Shoots initiative, which looks at ways of making use of former industrial open spaces in and around the village.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

The funding has already helped the Trust secure three new jobs, with two Development Officers and a Finance Officer appointed for its Roots to Shoots plans.

But in order to make further progress, the Trust has asked Wrexham Council for a loan of £170,000, which would provide it with the funds needed to progress these plans further.

The loan would be repaid to Wrexham Council by the Trust, using funds reclaimed from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The lead members of Wrexham Council will discuss the loan at the next meeting of the Executive Board on Tuesday, September 12.

    Help with grant funding

Under some funding arrangements, organisations are sometimes required to spend their own funds and then reclaim them from grant money – but this can be difficult for smaller organisations which don’t have such large funds to begin with.

If approved by the Executive Board, the loan would see the authority help ease Brymbo Heritage’s cashflow pressures, providing it with funds to help kick-start individual projects which the council will then recoup from grant funds.

Nick Amyes, Chair of Brymbo Heritage Trust, said:  “We’re incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm Wrexham Council shows for our plans, but without their practical support we simply couldn’t process some of the larger grants we need to make the plans a reality. Our next step relies on us being able to ‘spend first and reclaim later’ so we need working capital, and the loan from the Council is a perfect solution.”

“The council’s support will help us to manage to the flow of funds and help us get started on work sooner rather than later.”

Webcasting of the Executive Board meeting will be available online here

  • Making Memories – a stall to remember

Making Memories – a stall to remember

Meet independent market trader Andrea Hughes who runs Making Memories in the Butcher’s Market.

Andrea opened her stall last year having worked in education for more than 30 years and so far it’s been a good move as business has been very steady.

    “vintage shabby chic”

Andrea offers a range of personalised gifts which she describes as “vintage shabby chic”.  Her stall is packed full of gifts for events such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and new borns.  All of which can have names, dates or verses put onto them to make them that extra bit special.

We found all Andrea’s prices were very reasonable and there’s certainly something for all budgets.

Andrea is also happy to let customers hire table decorations and accessories for special events, particularly weddings which is a big help in bringing down the overall cost of the big day.

    Andrea said:

    “lovely and very loyal”

“Wrexham people have been lovely and very loyal since I’ve been here.  It’s also great that so many people are willing to support local and independent traders.  We have a range of gifts that are suitable for all ages, from personalised wooden yoyos to that ideal photo frame which can have a personalised verse put in for somebody’s 50 Wedding Anniversary.”

We asked Andrea about advertising and, like the other independent traders we have spoken to she favours Facebook and her own “Making Memories” website

    Both are available here:

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said:
