Wrexham through to next round of city of culture competition

Wrexham is through to the next round of the competition to become the UK City of Culture 2025.

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted that Wrexham has been included in the longlist – it’s fantastic news and a real achievement given how strong the competition is.

“There’s still a long way to go, but Wrexham is a wonderful place full of culture, industry and creativity, and whatever happens, we can look forward to the future with confidence and optimism.”

The county borough is one of 20 places to throw its hat in the ring, and was named on the UK Government’s ‘longlist’ earlier today.

Only eight locations have made it onto the longlist. These are:

    • Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon
    • Bradford
    • Cornwall
    • County Durham
    • Derby
    • Southampton
    • Stirling
    • Wrexham County Borough

Every four years, a town or city is given the title of UK City of Culture – helping to raise its profile, boost its local economy and highlight everything that’s good about the location.

    The current title-holder is Coventry.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Wrexham Council says that getting to this stage has been a team effort, and a special mention should be given to Ty Pawb, which has played a key role in making culture accessible and attractive to everyone in Wrexham.

UK Government Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said:

“Culture is for everyone, regardless of their background and I’m delighted that the bids from our eight longlisted places will help areas across the UK level up by increasing access to culture.

“I wish all our successful bids luck in the next phase of the competition. Wrexham County Borough’s bid showed huge promise and I look forward to seeing what they have in store.”

    Welsh Secretary Simon Hart said:

“In a fantastic field of UK City of Culture bids, Wrexham has done extremely well to fly the flag for Wales by reaching the longlist.

“I wish them every success as they seek to become the first Welsh holder of the UK City of Culture title with all the opportunities it will bring to an area of huge cultural pedigree which contains the World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, one of the world’s oldest football clubs in Wrexham FC and the Stiwt Theatre.”

  • Leave only Pawprints – new campaign to tackle dog fouling

Leave only Pawprints – new campaign to tackle dog fouling

We’re supporting Caru Cymru’s new national campaign to do tackle dog fouling by urging dog owners to “Leave Only Pawprints” and pick up after their pets.

Although an estimated nine out of ten dog owners pick up after their pets, dog poo remains a persistent issue in communities across the country. Keep Wales Tidy’s campaign aims to raise awareness of the health risks associated with dog poo; not just for humans but also for livestock and other pets.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Dog poo that’s left behind can carry harmful bacteria which can remain in soil long after it has decomposed.

The nationwide campaign is being run as part of Caru Cymru (a Welsh phrase meaning ‘Love Wales’) – an inclusive movement led by Keep Wales Tidy and local authorities to inspire people to take action and care for the environment.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said, “Dog fouling is something we all hate to see and so it’s important we support this campaign and encourage all pet owners to pick up after their dog has fouled.

“There’s no excuse for it and it could land you with a fine so please support this campaign and leave only pawprints when you exercise your dog.”

Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive Lesley Jones said:

“We’re excited to be launching this important campaign with our local authority partners. As a nation of dog lovers, we should all be aware that dog poo isn’t just an unpleasant mess, it can be dangerous.

“We’re urging the small minority of irresponsible dog owners to do the right thing. By not picking up after your dog, you could be putting people, livestock, and our beloved pets at risk. Please bag it, bin it and leave only pawprints when you’re out and about.”

To join the campaign and find out more visit Keep Wales Tidy’s website  www.keepwalestidy.cymru/caru-cymru

Caru Cymru has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

Autumn leaves need clearing? It’s not too late to join the garden waste collection service

The 2021/22 garden waste collection service began on August 30, but if you didn’t get around to signing up and now regret it, please be aware it’s not too late to join.

The service charge has been frozen at £25 per bin and runs from the date you sign up until September 2, 2022, so it’s better to sign up sooner rather than later to get the best value. Simply put, the earlier you join, the more collections you’ll get.

If you want to have your garden waste bin(s) collected you can pay online at www.wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste

SIGN UP TO PAY FOR GREEN BIN COLLECTION

If you sign up now, you can still get around 11 months of collections, whereas if you left it for a further month before signing up, you’d only get 10 months collections for the same price.

It’s better to sign up now and get more collections for your money.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “As we’re now into autumn, with leaves falling from trees and people having dead plants to clear from the summer, we want to remind residents that they can still join the garden waste collection scheme. The service runs until September 2, 2022, so you’re still able to get many months of collections for £25 if you sign up soon. If you now want to join, please head over to wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste and follow the instructions to pay for the service.”

Please pay online if you can

Paying online is by far the easiest and most convenient way to sign up to the service, as you can do it any time you want and it only takes a couple of minutes.

If you’re unable to do this, you can call Streetscene to make a card payment, but please be aware that you’re likely to experience a wait if you do so.

Allow 10 days for your sticker

Residents who sign up for the service will be issued with a new sticker, which will need to be displayed clearly on your bin lid. Please allow at least 10 working days to receive your new sticker pack from the date you sign up.

Sign up to pay for your green bin to be emptied.

  • Make sure you are aware of the dangers of magnets

Make sure you are aware of the dangers of magnets

We’re supporting the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) to promote the dangers that magnets can pose to children and teenagers and importantly – how to keep them safe.

Magnets are very common in our homes in such items as toys, electronic devices and even on our fridges. Please put these out of small children’s reach. Don’t let them play with faulty toys as the magnet could become loose and could easily be swallowed. Either get it fixed or dispose of it safely.

If you think any item you have purchased is unsafe report it to your local
    Trading Standards Team.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Talk to children about the dangers of magnets

Using magnetic products as fake piercings, on the tongue, mouth or nose, increases the risk of inhalation or ingestion.

You should talk to your children and teenagers as to why small high-powered magnets are dangerous, and why they shouldn’t use them as fake piercings on their body, or as decorative items on glassware.

If you suspect your child has swallowed magnets

Take them straight to the nearest A&E or call 999 for an ambulance.

Symptoms may not be obvious. Your child might:

    • have stomach pain
    • be vomiting
    • have a fever
    • be pointing to their throat or stomach
    • Unclear or fluctuating symptoms mean it’s important to be vigilant.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said, “There’s been quite a few incidences in the past few months where children have swallowed magnets and have had quite severe consequences. Please keep them away from small children and make older children aware of the dangers magnets can pose to them and their health.”

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.
