  • Ryan Reynolds “Free Guy” Due for Release on 13 August!

Ryan Reynolds “Free Guy” Due for Release on 13 August!

As we start to look forward to enjoying more leisure time this year, excitement is building amongst local film fans here in Wrexham with it being just days until Wrexham Football Club’s co-owner, Ryan Reynolds new film “Free Guy” drops into cinemas up and down the country!

As a special nod to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Wrexham Football Club, Disney has commissioned a private premiere of the film to take place here in the town, at the Odeon on 10 August, ahead of its official release in cinemas on 13 August a few days later.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

Although the main UK premier will be taking place a few hundred miles away in Leicester Square, Disney are staging a local, invite only event to include frontline emergency service workers and charities including Nightingale House Hospice and Blood Bikes by way of a thankyou for their work over the last 16-months.

The event itself will not be attended by any of the cast due to travel restrictions and diary commitments, however we’re sure that Wrexham cinema-goers will be taking a keen interest in this latest film from Deadpool star Reynolds.

The film is a story of the open world video game Free City, in which Guy (Reynolds) works as a bank teller. Thanks to a program developed by programmers inserted into Free City by the publisher – Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and takes steps to make himself the hero, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.

Speaking about the event, Leader of Wrexham Council, Cllr Mark Pritchard said; “We’re all delighted and its fantastic news that Disney have considered Wrexham for this one-off event and I’m sure many of us are looking forward to watching the film and starting to safely enjoy more leisure events now that restrictions are easing further here in Wales.

“Despite Ryan or Rob not having had chance to visit Wrexham yet – I know we’re all going to give them a great welcome when that day finally arrives.”

  • Geocache Playful Challenge

    Geocache Playful Challenge

Wrexham Play and Youth Support team are encouraging children and families to get outside and take part in “The Summer of Play”.

As part of “The Summer of Play” we have hidden some geocaches for children to find (see below for details on how to find them).

We have chosen playful places across Wrexham to hide our caches and would like children to play with what they find and then put it back ready for the next person to find.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

Geocaching is a world wide treasure hunt, it’s free to down load for the basic caches or there is an annual fee if you want to do premium caches (really not needed unless you decide you want to do more). Anyone can hide one, so you never know what they will look like or what to expect.

    Things you may need

    • a pen
    • things to swap
    • tweezers
    • nettle/ sting relief
    • charged up phone
    • snacks and drinks
    • hand sanitiser
    • a sense of adventure

    How does Geocaching work?

Download the app and then pick an area you want to explore. Each cache will
give you information about the environment, some maybe too difficult to get
prams to, but there are some in county parks and villages which are accessible.

Use the clues to find the cache, caches can be tiny little magnets with a role of
paper to log your find, or can be huge boxes filled with plastic toys
(promotional freebies), if you are lucky enough to find one with toys you can
help yourself but you must leave something of yours in its place. All caches
must be left as you found them. You then log your find on the app.

Some caches hold trackables, if you find one, you can log it to see where it has come from and then help it to reach its destination, you have 2 weeks to rehide it in another cache. Some of theses have travelled around the world several times.

  • Climate Change – our plans are really taking shape to tackle it

Climate Change – our plans are really taking shape to tackle it

For the rest of this year we plan to increase and expand our work in a cost effective and sustainable manner and we thought it would be useful to outline some of the plans we have that we can in mind that are in line with our priority areas.

In total were planning to spend £640k this year to support the work we do to make Wrexham a Clean Green Environment.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

    Buildings

    • We have a lot of buildings throughout Wrexham including schools and housing estate offices. More buildings will have the latest technology installed to ensure minimum energy consumption and maximum carbon savings.
    • This year we’ll be looking at spending approximately £67,000 installing Building Management Systems (BMS) into some of our schools to monitor and effectively manage services such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning. This will include a programme of 10 schools, of which 3 are our large high schools, deriving a wealth of benefits in terms of reducing our carbon emissions from the heating of our buildings.
    • Schools will also benefit from lighting upgrades, we have programmed for 4 primary schools and 1 large high school to have a full LED lighting scheme installed, at a cost of more than £150,000.
    • Within our large depot on Ruthin road we will be looking at the potential to install a battery storage system to link with their existing Solar PV installation – which could cost around £200,000.
    • The Environment Depot at Abbey road will look to have Solar PV installed to support the expansion of the number of electric vehicle charging points for the ever expanding electric fleet.
    • We will be spending £55,000 on the newly refurbished Crown Buildings, will have a large PV system installed, which will support the reduction in carbon emissions from the building.

    Transport and Mobility

    • We already have quite a few electric vehicles and we’re  continuing to install EV charging points at more of our premises to make sure we can keep them all charged and effective. Over the coming months we will be using Welsh Government grant funding (of £35,000) to increase the number of publicly accessible charging points, with installation in our more rural locations, for example we will be installing a charging point in Holt car park, which will support the move to electric vehicles in our outlining villages, and ensure charging facilities for visitors.
    • We’re now increasing the number of electric vehicles we’re using and have just taken delivery of several replacement vehicles to be used by our Environment Department and we’re awaiting the first electric refuse collection vehicles in Wales. The Environment fleet is one of the largest in our organisation and can be seen on our roads every day so this is a huge step towards reducing our carbon.
    • We have been able to access Welsh Government funding of £300,000 to support the increase in charging infrastructure in our Council depots and support our move to an electric fleet, by ensuring we have the charging facilities available to allow the vehicles to charge with ease.

    Land Use

    • We own lots of land and associated buildings across the county borough and making sure we ensure it’s of high quality and is offering the best environment for the ecology of the area is important.
    • Trees are an important and widespread asset in all our communities and we will continue to expand tree planting and replacing trees with equal or better specimens as trees come to the end of their natural life. We’ll also plant more woodland areas and support groups and organisations who want to set up their own community gardens.
    • By doing this we’ll be offsetting any carbon we do produce and begin to see change.

Procurement (how we get our goods and services)

    • This is perhaps the most central part of our plans but the one that will not be seen by the public – buying goods and services from food for school meals and refuse vehicles to paper and ink. It all has to be produced and developed and we’ll be changing the way we look at contracts to take into account the value the bidders can bring to support our carbon neutral targets.
    • Becoming carbon neutral to reduce our impact on climate change

Biodiversity is also very important and we have planted up an additional 9 areas with wildflowers – this is in addition to the planting that’s taken place on our roundabouts.

We intend to build up on these areas each year and to continue to help residents create their own wildflower areas.

Whilst all these plans are ambitious they’ll only be useful if we are able to measure their impact and we’ll be working with the Welsh Assembly Government to set our baselines so we can go forward fully armed to set achievable targets as we progress to being carbon neutral by 2030 reduce our impact on climate change.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport and Climate Change Champion, said, “Recent news shows just how serious the situation is and we’re now in a position here in Wrexham to see serious and sustainable works taking place that can really make a difference. It’s now essential that our carbon neutral commitment is imbedded in every aspect of our work and it’s very encouraging to see this is beginning to happen.

“We don’t work alone though and it’s important to recognise the work our partners at the Public Services Board, Welsh Government and Economic Ambition Board do in making sure we do this in a joined up and managed way.”

“I’ll be updating  the council later this year on how this important work is progressing.”

To further this important work we’re recruiting for a Climate Change and Carbon Reduction Manager who will ensure that everything we do we do in a carbon neutral manner and that it’s an integral part of our work from emptying bins to building schools.

If doing something about Climate Change right here in Wrexham is something you would like to do you can take a look at what we’re looking for in article below.

We have an exciting opportunity to lead our plans for Climate Change and Carbon Reduction

  • Playday comes to communities across Wrexham on 4 August

Playday comes to communities across Wrexham on 4 August

This year’s Playday will be very different as it will take place in communities all over Wrexham rather than on Llwyn Isaf and Queens Square.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty for your children to get involved with – not only on Playday 4 August but throughout the week as we’ve teamed up with the Summer of Play to make sure children can enjoy being out and about this year.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

Like last year it’s going to be different but there’s still a lot to take part in to make sure that children don’t miss out this year.

Play Work projects are operating around the county borough and as part of the Summer of Fun our Play Team will be putting on fun Circus Skills sessions as part of the projects. You can read more about where these are below:

List of PLAY WORK PROJECTS in your area

We will also be joining with our friends at Play Wales to hide a number of their children’s books “Fun in the Dungeon” and “Fun in the Garden” all over Wrexham, anyone lucky enough to find a copy will get to keep it.

To mark Playday and the Summer of Play the Play and Youth Support Team will be setting a number of playful geocaches. If you are not familiar with geocaching have a look at the geocache app and start practicing your caching skills ready for Playday.

Clybiau Plant Cymru are hiding a number of QR codes…

with playful ideas on them across Wales, we will be making sure that these are spread out across Wrexham.

And don’t forget our partners at Xplore Science will be playing in their walkway both on Playday and at the weekends either side of the event.

“Playday is a day to remember”

Cllr John Pritchard, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti Poverty, said, “Once again our Play Team has worked hard to make sure that Playday 2021 is a day to remember for lots of children.

“We’ll all miss the usual bursting town centre and especially the chalk marks all over the Guildhall and Queen’s Square but I hope parents and children take advantage of what’s on offer and wish everyone a very successful and enjoyable day.”

  • “I’m bored!” 7 ways to avoid these dreaded words during school hols

“I’m bored!” 7 ways to avoid these dreaded words during school hols

Every parent has been there…you’re barely a week or two into the school holidays, when your children utter those dreaded words: “I’m bored.”

Cue lots of moping about and long faces – interspersed with zombie-like periods when they’re glued to the Play Station or TikTok, or just messaging friends to say they’re bored.

Thankfully, there’s a lot of stuff going on in Wrexham despite the tough times caused by the pandemic.

What’s more, staying active over the holidays can make it easier for children to get back into the right frame of mind for school in September.

Councillor John Pritchard, Wrexham Council’s lead member for youth services, says:

“Staying busy over the school holidays is important, but it’s not always easy to find things that children want to do…and sometimes they need that extra nudge.

“Keeping their minds and bodies active can make it easier for children to move up a gear when it’s time to go back to school, and it can also make the holidays a lot more fun and interesting.

“Despite the pandemic, there are still lots of things going on in Wrexham and many activities are free.”

    Some ideas…

1.Fun stuff to do at schools

For starters, there are various things going on at some of our schools and school-based leisure centres.

2.More fun from the Active Wrexham team

As well as the things going on at school-based leisure centres, our Active Wrexham team has organised a heap of other fun stuff – including Tae Kwon Do, gymnastics, athletics and football skills training.

4.Get involved in Play Day (August 4)

Instead of just being based in the town centre, Play Day will be spread across the county borough this year – making it even easier for everyone to take part.

Follow the Wrexham Play Team on Facebook or Twitter for more info…

5.Visit our parks and country parks

Getting out and about in the fresh air is great for kids (and for adults too). There are loads of great outdoor spaces in the county borough and even a trip to your local park can help blow off the cobwebs.

And of course, we have some great country parks in Wrexham – including Alyn Waters, Nant Mill and Ty Mawr.

    6.Go swimming

    🐟
Swimming is great fun, great exercise and a potentially life-saving skill. So why not check out what Freedom Leisure can offer at Waterworld, Chirk and Gwyn Evans (Gwersyllt) this summer?

    7.Play footy!

    🥅
There are loads of opportunities for both girls and boys to enjoy the beautiful game this summer.

For example, the Racecourse Community Foundation (the official charity of Wrexham AFC) is running weekly football hubs for girls throughout the hols.

And if your child is interested in joining a local football team, now is the time (during pre-season). You’ll find most grass roots teams have Facebook pages with training times and contact details.

  • Introducing our brand new useful art space – a-gallery space with a difference

Introducing our brand new useful art space – a-gallery space with a difference

On Saturday 7th August we’ll be inviting you to come and see the opening of exciting new space at Tŷ Pawb.

The Useful Art Space (Lle Celf Defnyddiol) is a gallery space with a difference. It’s not only a space for display and contemplation but also a place for engagement, play, dialogue and learning.

It is a place for generating artful ideas together in response to shared challenges, and a place to reimagine our individual and collective futures.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

The unique furniture and structures within the space have been designed and made by Tim Denton, in dialogue with playwork experts Ludicology.

These have been designed to flexibly support a range of activity within the space, including weekly playwork sessions facilitated by local playworkers.

How we’ll be using the space

We have created Lle Celf Ddefnyddiol / the Useful Art Space because we believe art can be much more than something to look at or watch, we believe art can be a tool for social change.

We already have some exciting projects lined up, including:

    • A project led by Ibukun Baldwin, who will be working with refugees and asylum seekers.
    • ‘Bom Dia Cymru’ – a development of creative project with the Portuguese Elder community.
    • Regular play-work sessions with the Play Team.
    • Working with Glyndwr University Students from the School of Creative Arts, who will be partially based in Tŷ Pawb and engaging with the useful art archive.
    • Working with National Theatre Wales, who will be running a series of spoken-word workshops for young people.

    Introducing Arte Útil

As we develop this space and the projects within it, we are linking with like-minded colleagues internationally, and the Association of Arte Útil.

Arte Útil roughly translates into English as ‘useful art’ but it goes further suggesting art as a tool or device. Arte Útil draws on artistic thinking to imagine, create and implement tactics that change how we act in society.

A key feature of the space is the Arte Útil Archive, which platforms case studies of Useful Art projects from around the world. We have involved our communities in the launch of this space by featuring a number of arts projects that are useful and locally beneficial. These have been included in the Arte Útil international archive, part of which appears here in several languages and it is also available online at www.arte-util.org.

Come and participate in our opening event

As part of the launch event we’re inviting visitors of all ages to come and participate in a drop-in activity led by Creative Practitioner Noemi Santos.

We’d like you to help us answer the questions ‘Is art useful?’ and ‘What is art for?’

You’ll be through using stitching and drawing techniques on postcard’s that will be displayed in the space.

The activity is suitable for all ages! It’s an ideal chance to come and see the space for the first time.

Come and join us on Saturday 7th August from 12pm-2pm.

Free online talk with Alessandra Saviotti

At 6pm on Saturday 7th August, curator and educator Alessandra Saviotti will give a free online zoom presentation about the international Arte Útil archive which features in the space.

Alessandra will then take questions from the audience.

Alessandra Saviotti is a co-curator and archivist of the Arte Util Archive, and was part of the curatorial team for the Museum of Arte Util which was initiated by artist Tania Bruguera at the Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven in 2014.

Alessandra works as a curator and educator and is currently a PhD candidate at Liverpool John Moores University. Current projects include Decentralising Political Economies (www.dpe.tools) a research strand on the uses of art and economy, developed in collaboration with the Whitworth Gallery, Liverpool John Moores University and the Asociacion de Arte Util. Alessandra is a regular guest teacher at the iMAE & MKE at ArtEZ – University of the Arts (Arnhem, NL)

Why we’ve created the Useful Art Space

The space reflects our ethos of working collaboratively with local communities to address common themes through artistic means.

The transformation of this space builds on the Useful Art approach that has underpinned Tŷ Pawb since opening in 2018 and is at the very heart of our work.

Central to Lle Celf Ddefnyddiol is the interaction between arts and markets: we want to harness the innate creativity of market trading, exploring commonalities between what is happening in the market hall and the work of artists at Tŷ Pawb.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, “The creation of Lle Celf Ddefnyddiol -the Useful Art Space is a significant milestone in Tŷ Pawb’s short history. We are re-imagining the way a gallery can work, encouraging more interaction with our communities and developing new projects with groups and organisations from across Wrexham and beyond.

“At the heart of this new project is the goal of using art to create positive social change.

“We are tremendously excited to see how the space will be used by the various groups who will be working with us over the next few months.

“Something very special is being created here and I would urge everyone to come and take a look when the space open for the first time on Saturday 7th August.”
