New floodlights up – get your bookings in!

A while back, we put out the news that new floodlighting columns were being installed on the all-weather pitch at Ysgol Clywedog, on Ruthin Road.

Now, we’ve got some even better news – they’re finished!

This means the pitch will now be able to host evening games and training alike – even after the autumn nights start to draw in.

We’re now taking bookings for any floodlit training and matches starting from September 1.

For those clubs who are further afield, bookings are also available for the floodlit 3G pitches at Chirk, Morgan Llwyd and Queensway.

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “While it may seem a little early for us to be promoting floodlit football, a number of bookings have already been taken for floodlit matches and training on the all-weather pitch at Ysgol Clywedog, and we know demand is only likely to go up as the autumn nears.

“The new floodlights are now in place, so clubs and sporting groups would be well-advised to get their bookings in now.”

  • Be safe, be prepared in North Wales

Be safe, be prepared in North Wales

Be safe, be prepared is the message behind a major social media campaign being launched this September and supported by all North Wales councils, Welsh Government, the emergency services and some utility companies.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

The #30days30waysUK campaign has been running in parts of the UK and in other countries world-wide over recent years  and this year it is being supported by the North Wales Local Resilience Forum, a body made up of all organisations involved in dealing with emergencies) is lending its support. The Forum has a duty to warn and inform the public on how to stay safe during emergencies.

One message will be issued each day during September on a wide range of issues, including how to deal with flooding, staying safe in the home, awareness of cyber-bullying, fire safety, tips on driving in wintry weather and where to find the latest information about roadworks and traffic alerts.

Residents can find the messages on the social media accounts of all the partners involved in the campaign in North Wales by using the hashtag #30days30waysUK

  • Town centre improvements – what’s on the way?

Town centre improvements – what’s on the way?

We’ve already carried out a number of works to the town centre streetscape.

These include £250,000 worth of improvements to Wrexham Bus Station, including refurbished toilets; new litter bins; improved information screens; a planned disabled parking area and resurfacing of the highway immediately outside the station.

We’ve also carried out major Phase 1 works to Regent Street, Hope Street and Queens Square.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

And recently, we carried out improvements on Lord Street to help tackle anti-social behaviour, by removing bins, benches and trees.

But there’s even more improvements on the way.

The next round of updates and improvements to the town centre will take place near St Giles Church and the neighbouring streets, with a number of works planned.

Some of the upcoming works planned include:

    • New public litter bins throughout the town centre (plus improved pushcarts for our street cleaning team).
    • A proposed new storage area for bins used by residents and businesses on Yorke Street, plus creating a secure area for the collection of bins, and better management of the collection of bins on Temple Row.
    • Rolling out new heritage-style LED lighting on Queens Square, Lambpit Street and Queens Street, plus new LED lights for Temple Row
    • Planting flower beds throughout the town centre.
    • Tree pruning and clearing near St Giles Parish Church, to trees overhanging Temple Row and College Street.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “While we’ve already carried out a number of improvements to the streetscape this year, further planned updates are in hand for areas throughout the town centre. These works are already scheduled as part of planned improvements to the town centre. There are other works which are planned for, and which we would like to carry out, but those are dependent on funding.”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Performance and Regeneration, said: “While I’m very pleased with the extent of works which have already taken place in the town centre, I’m glad to see that further works are planned for the improvement of the area, and look forward to see them taking place.”

  • Apollo drivers lead the way with dementia awareness

Apollo drivers lead the way with dementia awareness

Taxi drivers at Apollo Taxis based in the town centre have just received dementia awareness training – the first taxi company in Wrexham to organise this training for their staff. 🙂

The one hour session was delivered by Bev Larkins, a Dementia Champion and Member of Wrexham’s Dementia Friendly Communities Steering Group, at their premises in Charles Street.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

Joss Thomas, Specialist Officer for licensing said: “Taxi drivers are the eyes and ears of our streets. They are often in a position to help those with dementia and to be even more aware of what that person is going through has to be a good thing. I’d like to thank them all for taking part, particularly as this is a voluntary session and is not required for their licence conditions, and for recognising the significant role they can play in safeguarding our communities.”

Debbie Belton, Office Manager, said: “The session was really interesting and very helpful. We all feel better knowing we can help make a difference in a person’s life. The session took about an hour and I’d encourage other organisations who play similar roles in the community as we do to take part.”

  • Mice, Sand and Robots for Town Centre Festival

Mice, Sand and Robots for Town Centre Festival

As the summer holidays come to a close, traders in the town centre are gearing up for the August Summer Festival which takes place in and around the town centre this Saturday, August 31.

And it promises to be a great one with mice, sand and robots!

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

At St Giles Parish Church there’s the Mouse Festival  – “The Church Mouse in God’s House” which celebrates the life of the church mouse.

More than 400 mice have been knitted by volunteers and community groups who have created a unique take on life within the Church. It shows the different groups and activities that take place in the church from the Babes in the Pew, parent and toddler group to the Memory Café for people with dementia, and from Christenings to funerals.

Also at St Giles you can climb the Church tower for fantastic views across Wrexham. These take place in the morning – some excellent exercise before lunch, perhaps!

    “All that sand”

Then there’s all the activities taking place in Tŷ Pawb.

Here you can take part in some free family science fun, pottery painting or slime making at Cwtch Ceramics; browse the market stalls; contribute to the community painting and perhaps have some lunch or a coffee at the food court.

If you have little ones with you they’ll love the PLAY-WORK art exhibition that has seen the gallery space changed into an indoor adventure playground.

The exhibition celebrates children’s right to play and the fantastic opportunities for play there are in Wrexham. We think you’ll be very impressed at what they’ve done with the space – particularly all that sand!

There’s also the two other markets in Wrexham town centre – the Butcher’s Market and General Market – both in lovely Victorian buildings with a fantastic range of stalls.

The General Market will also have a Robot and Science display which includes Glitterbomb from TV’s Robot Wars.

You can “Look UP” in Central Arcade to see the original lanterns which are proving very popular – and if you find the mice you can get a prize.

Throughout the town centre there’s also an excellent selection of indie shops for you to browse in addition to the markets so why not check them out?

And if you’re a football fan you might want to take a stroll to Wrexham Museum and Archives on Regent Street for their Football Forever exhibition. You can read more about that below:

Football Forever – Major new exhibition to open at Wrexham Museum

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration said: “It promises to be an excellent Festival and there’s lots going on in the town centre for all the family to enjoy. There’s a huge amount of hard work behind all these activities and I would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment to the town centre and to promoting all that’s on offer for you to enjoy.”
