International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest education initiative of the compost industry and this year it runs from Sunday, May 4 until Saturday, May 10.
Throughout the week, events are held all over the world with many different activities taking place that encourage and celebrate all types of composting, from backyard to large–scale.
Local pop up events
Our Open Spaces Team and Recycling Team have teamed up and will offer a pop up tent at:
- Acton Park, May 7, 11am – 1pm
- Alyn Waters, May 8, 1pm – 3pm
Come along for:
- Advice about composting and recycling
- Free caddy liners
- Free tote bags
- Free pencils and pens
There will be a limited amount of caddies available to pick up for residents who need replacements or would like to start composting their food waste
The Open Spaces team will be there to discuss Wales in Bloom, and their projects around the Borough using Local Places for Nature grant funding.
Make soil improver – and collect it for free!
What can you compost?
Both your garden waste and most types of food waste can be used to make your own compost at home:
- Grass cuttings
- Hedge cuttings
- Vegetable peelings
- Tea bags (more information – Wales Recycles: tea bags)
- Coffee grounds
- Ripped cardboard and paper
- Fruit cuttings

Food and garden waste
Did you know your food waste and garden waste in Wrexham is used to create soil improver, which is available for residents to collect at the three recycling centres throughout the year?
So if you’re not already recycling your food waste, why not start recycling your leftovers and turn it into something useful? And then when you need to do a bit of gardening you can come and collect some free soil improver.
