A new free respite evening service has launched at Deva House in Wrexham, offering a welcoming and supportive space for people living with dementia and their families.
The sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm-7pm and are open to everyone, free of charge.
The evenings provide a safe space for support, companionship and relaxation, with tea and coffee available, friendly conversation, and trained staff on hand to support people living with dementia and their loved ones.
The service is being delivered as an evening project at Deva House, supported by The National Lottery Community Fund.
Deva House is a dedicated day care centre for older adults, supporting community members aged 55 and over with daily activities, hot meals and a supportive environment.
A Meals on Wheels service is also available from Deva House, delivering hot, two-course freshly prepared meals to residents across Wrexham who may be struggling to cook or care for themselves.
Councillor Beverley Parry-Jones, Lead Member for Adult Social Care, Health and Wellbeing said “This initiative will make a real difference to people living with dementia and the family members and carers who support them.”
“Having somewhere welcoming, safe and supportive to go in the early evening can provide reassurance, companionship and a much-needed opportunity for carers to take a short break.”
Gary Brown, Chief Officer of Caia Park Partnership said, “Providing care for a loved one at home is hugely demanding, both physically and emotionally. Respite helps make this manageable but isn’t always available when people could get the most benefit from it.”
“We’ve listened to carers who’ve craved daily respite around teatime, to give them scope for social activities, shopping as well as rest. We’re delighted that the National Lottery Community Fund is supporting this evening pilot project here in Wrexham.”
Councillor Frank Hemmings, Dementia Ambassador for The Alzheimer’s Society said, “Dementia can be incredibly challenging, not only for the person living with the condition, but also for the people closest to them.”
“Services like this are important because they help reduce isolation and provide practical, compassionate support in the community.”
