Mayor of Wrexham receiving a PSA screening test

The Mayor of Wrexham attended a free PSA prostate cancer screening event at Hotel Wrexham, highlighting the importance of early detection and supporting the outstanding work of the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Around 70 men attended the screening day. While the vast majority received reassuring results, eight were advised to contact their GP for a repeat test after receiving a raised PSA reading. Organisers stressed that a number of factors can temporarily affect PSA levels, meaning a higher result does not necessarily indicate prostate cancer. However, follow-up testing is essential to rule out any concerns.

The event reinforced a vital message: when prostate cancer is detected early, around 92% of patients with a raised PSA who require treatment respond successfully. This demonstrates why men, particularly those with a family history of prostate cancer, are strongly encouraged to take advantage of screening opportunities.

The Mayor praised the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group for organising the event and for the invaluable support they provide to local men and their families.

“The dedication of this group is making a real difference in our community. Events like this can help identify potential problems early, giving people the best possible chance of successful treatment. I would encourage anyone who is eligible to consider being tested.”

With around 140 members, the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group is the largest of its kind in the UK and is recognised as the most successful support group in Wales.

The group does not meet during August but will resume meetings on the first Wednesday in September, and on the first Wednesday of each month thereafter, at 7.00pm at Hotel Wrexham.

For further information about the group, contact Secretary Phil Jones on 07525 824679. Both Phil Jones and Mal Williams, who live in Marford, have been the driving force behind the group’s continued success and commitment to raising awareness of prostate cancer across the Wrexham area.
