Wrexham Is the Name

Remember Dydd Llun Pawb? The new exhibition, entitled Wrexham Is The Name, will recapture that day, which saw thousands of people come to Wrexham town centre to celebrate the opening of Tŷ Pawb.

In November last year, six artists were selected by Tŷ Pawb to develop a souvenir inspired by a specific story from Wrexham’s past.

The six stories that inspired the souvenirs were chosen by the public last summer from a long list of 25, and were developed by artists Sophia Leadill, John Merrill, Marcus Orlandi, Nicholas Pankhurst, Martha Todd and Bedwyr Williams

The project resulted in a diverse collection of artefacts, from printed publications to football scarves.

The new exhibition will feature the six Wrexham-themed souvenirs, along with other objects and images.

The vibrant, humorous and poignant works will be displayed alongside various items of documentation of Dydd Llun Pawb as well as interviews with each of the six artists.

We are continuing to collect stories as part of this exhibition. If you have a story about Wrexham that you’d like to share, please come along and fill one of our story cards in Gallery 2 at Tŷ Pawb!

Nascent Inclinations

This exhibition will be a chance to celebrate the wealth of emerging artistic talent from Universities across the local region.

Partners including Wrexham Glyndwr University and Liverpool Hope University will each be represented by three outstanding graduating artists.

Also featuring in the exhibition will be students from courses at Aberystwyth University, University of Chester, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and Liverpool John Moores University.

‘Nascent Inclinations’ will open in tandem with the ‘Wrexham Is The Name’ exhibition on Saturday 30th June 2018 and will run until 14th July in Gallery One.

Come along to the opening events

We’ll be holding free to attend opening events on Saturday 30 June to introduce each of the two new exhibitions.

Many of the artists, students and individuals involved in the exhibitions will be attending and there will be refreshments available.

Anyone is welcome to attend!

Exhibitions the whole of North Wales can be proud of

Jo Marsh, Arts Lead for Wrexham County Borough Council and Creative Director at Tŷ Pawb says: “The process of developing the six souvenirs for our Wrexham Is The Name exhibition has unearthed some weird and wonderful stories.

“All six artists have done a brilliant job in translating our heritage into something that visitors to Tŷ Pawb will want to own and treasure.

”Bringing together the outstanding talent from these six local institutions for our Nascent Inclinations is a truly unique but accurate interpretation of Ty Pawb’s mission. Not only does this demonstrate the extraordinary artistic output in our region, it also highlights Wrexham’s advantageous geographic location.

“This is an exhibition that the whole of the North of Wales and the North West of England can be proud of.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “I would encourage anyone interested in Wrexham’s heritage to pay a visit to this exhibition at Tŷ Pawb. This is an excellent example of our local communities involving themselves in the life of Tŷ Pawb.

“The souvenirs produced have been inspired by a number of memories of bygone Wrexham, and I’m sure members of the public will have equally fond memories of them.”

    • Wrexham Is The Name will be at Tŷ Pawb from 30 June until 19 August in Gallery 2.
    • Nascent Inclinations will be at Tŷ Pawb from 30 June until 15 July in Gallery 1.
    • The opening events for both exhibitions will take place on Saturday 30 June – 1pm for Wrexham Is The Name and 5pm for Nascent Inclinations.
    • All exhibitions and opening events are free to attend.
