Earlier this year we sought your views on how cycling and walking provision in Wrexham can be improved. We have now carefully considered all the comments and combined this public opinion together with other relevant information to produce a draft Active Travel Network Map (ATNM) ready for approval by Welsh Ministers.
We wish to provide Wrexham with a network that allows for walking, wheeling and cycling to become the most natural and normal way of getting about for local journeys. And, by doing so, to promote the health and well-being of everyone and to make our towns and villages more liveable places.
Under the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, all local authorities in Wales must regularly review and improve their walking, wheeling and cycling routes. Our current map was approved by the Welsh Government in August 2022, and now it’s time to reflect the changes and improvements made over the past four years.
We are reviewing and refining the ATNM to include:
- Existing Routes: These are routes that meet Welsh Government standards for walking, wheeling and cycling (or all three).
- Future Routes: These are proposed routes that either don’t yet exist, need improvements to meet the required standards or require an audit to ensure they pass.
A non-statutory consultation ran from 2 April – 18 May, as well as a number of face-to-face engagement sessions in local areas where we asked for your input on how to improve walking and cycling routes in your area.
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment, said “Walking, wheeling and cycling routes play an important role in helping people travel safely, sustainably and confidently across Wrexham.”
“We’re grateful to everyone who took part in the earlier consultation and shared their views. That feedback has helped shape the revised Active Travel Network Map, and we now want residents, communities and local organisations to take another look and have their say.”
“This is about creating a network that supports healthier lifestyles, improves local journeys and helps make Wrexham better connected and more liveable places.”
The comments and suggestions have been reviewed, and maps have prepared for 12-week statutory consultation. This will run from 29 June – 22 September 2026. The revised map will be submitted to Welsh Government in December 2026.
We kindly ask that you view the map and have your say.
