Ysgol Clywedog has been removed from special measures following a recent inspection by Estyn.
The report recognizes the significant improvements made at the school over the past two years, highlighting the positive impact of leaders, teachers and governors on the school’s culture, teaching and learning.
Inspectors noted that the pupils behave maturely and sensibly around the school, arrive to lessons punctually and settle quickly to their work. They also highlighted pupil’s positive attitudes to learning, their respectful behaviour towards others and their willingness to take part in class discussions.
Councillor Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education said, “This is excellent news for the Ysgol Clywedog community. Being removed from special measures is a welcomed achievement which reflects the dedication of the headteacher, staff, governors, pupils, and their families.”
“Whilst this has clearly been a team effort I think we should acknowledge the impact of recent leadership changes as highlighted in the report which praises the leadership of Headteacher Simon Ellis, who took up the role in September 2024 following 13 years as Headteacher at The Maelor School.”
Simon Ellis said “I’m delighted that the improvements that we have made over the last two years have been acknowledged. It’s a great boost to all in the school to see their hard work pay off. This is only a milestone in our improvement journey, there is a lot of positives but also a clear path for areas that still need to get better, we can now focus on making a good school into a great one.”
The report also found that teachers have appropriately high expectations and provide purposeful opportunities for pupils to develop their subject-specific vocabulary. Governors were described as strong supporters of the school, with a sound understanding of its strengths and areas for development.
