Earth Hour - Let's make a difference!

Once again we’ll be joining in with Earth Hour and asking our staff, businesses and residents to turn all the lights off at 8.30pm on March 30 for one hour.

  • “We kept our promise”
  • “We too must play our part”

Organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the global event sees millions taking part and the lights going off in landmark buildings like Buckingham Palace, Cardiff and Edinburgh Castles, The Sydney Opera House and the Eiffel Tower.

They’ve even given some suggestions about how we can spend the hour – if we don’t want to just watch the TV. You could get family and friends involved and have a candlelit supper, play charades instead of the Xbox or PlayStation or turn off the TV and open up a favourite book to talk about with friends or tell a bedtime story to the children.

However you choose to spend the hour you can find tips at wwf.org.uk/earthhour.

This year the WWF is asking everyone to pledge to change just one thing in their lives that will help protect the planet. We’ve agreed as an organisation that we’ll be reducing the use of plastics in all our meeting rooms – that’s no plastic cups, spoons or plates – it mightn’t seem a lot, but over a twelve month period it can mount up so we believe this is a good start.

We’re also encouraging our schools to be plastic aware and do what they can to replace and reduce its use in schools. It’s working too as you can see from this article we did earlier this year:

This is how Wrexham schools are taking tiny steps to save the planet (and you can do the same)

“More reusable items”

The WWF has given several suggestions how everyone can make their own pledge and share it with their family, there’s some really useful suggestions such as turn washing down to 30 degrees or reducing the amount of plastic bought in favour of more reusable items. There’s also some more challenging ones such as change the way we eat or plan a “staycation” or holiday closer to home.

“We kept our promise”

Last year we were asked to “make a promise” and we promised to install electric car charging facilities in Waterworld, Tŷ Pawb, Tŷ Mawr Country Park, Alyn Waters Country Park and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The move confirmed our commitment to reduce carbon and promote energy efficiency and we’re very pleased to say we kept our promise! 🙂 🙂

“We too must play our part”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We are always very proud to support Earth Hour and we know that lots of our residents take part too. The WWF play a huge part in raising awareness of the fragile state of our environment and as a local authority we too must play our part. I am pleased we are reducing our plastic use in a sustainable way and that our schools are also taking part. We’ll be encouraging many more schools to take part and we’ll be sure to keep you informed about it.”
