‘We Rise Together’ was used as our tagline for the City of Culture 2025 competition.

The competition, slogan and colourful campaign was about using culture to raise the bar on our ambitions and aspirations.

Renew your green bin for 2022/23 now – collections begin from September!

Although we were not awarded the title for 2025, the momentum and progress generated by being part of the competition has continued with an increased knowledge and confidence of the diverse cultural offering in Wrexham.

We have a vibrant arts and music scene, an amazing football club (with amazing owners), a World Heritage Site, world-class businesses and lots of strong and passionate communities.

We’ve also seen other successes, such as Tŷ Pawb becoming a finalist of the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022 award and city status announced for Wrexham, the official letters patent confirms city status from the 1st September 2022

We continue to rise together as a community and use our unique Wrecsam culture as a catalyst for positive changes as we look towards a busy month of weekend events in September, including:

Saturday 3rd September:

  • The Reaffirmation of the Freedom of the Borough to the Royal Welsh. Llwyn Isaf 11am.

Saturday 10th September:

  • Invited Guest service in St Giles Church to celebrate the award of City Status. St Giles Church 12pm.
  • Wrexham AFC v Maidenhead Utd FC. The Racecourse 3pm.
  • Live music from The Royston Club plus guests. Llwyn Isaf from 12pm until 8pm.

Saturday 17th September:

  • Wrexham City Fun Day. Activities throughout the city centre for all the family.

Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September

  • Wrexham Feast food festival. Waterworld car park from 10am.
  • Wrexham AFC v Torquay United. The Racecourse 3pm.

With the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary covering the Wrexham AFC takeover broadcasting soon on streaming services around the globe there’s likely to be even more focus on the region and Wrexham AFC.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council said: “Working together with our partners we are keen to see Wrexham City and Wrexham County thrive and grow, making the best of every opportunity that comes our way.

“We are keen to explore the many opportunities that becoming the Capital City of North Wales will bring.

“We have also agreed that with our partners we will develop our cultural offering as we head towards reapplying for City of Culture in 2029.

“The events schedule for September will showcase what we do well in Wrexham.”

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy & Regeneration said: “We have already secured levelling up funding for the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct area and are waiting to see if we are successful in our re-submitted bid for the Wrexham Gateway Project area. This funding would have a huge positive impact on the development of the Wrexham Gateway.

“Looking shorter term, a busy month of events in Wrexham will help entice further footfall into the high street.

“This is an exciting time for Wrexham locally, nationally and internationally and I’m keen to embrace and celebrate our successes and vision leading forward.”
