Council Tax Premiums Consultation – We want your views

We’re consulting on whether the Council Tax premium rate charged on long term empty properties should be increased in future years.

The consultation seeks views on a number of questions, such as should the premium rate increase from 50% to 100% from 1 April 2024, along with a further increase from April 2025. Views are also sought as to whether properties which have been empty for a number of years should pay a higher premium than the rates outlined above.

The intention of the premium is to encourage bringing empty properties back into use across the county borough and by doing so, increase the supply of local housing.

There are a number of situations where empty properties are not charged the premium such as them being for sale or let, but these are limited in nature and are time limited. Each case is looked at on its relative merits.

Council Leader and Lead Member for Finance Cllr Mark Pritchard said “It is important that we try and maximise the supply of available properties for sale or let.  The review of the premium rate on long term empty properties is one of the tools that the Council has at its disposal to help bring properties back into use. I would urge people to respond to this consultation and we will listen carefully to the feedback.”

The consultation will close on 17 September 2023 and a decision will be made at Full Council in September.
